A few years ag, we bught a mdel Leg (乐高) set f the Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) fr my dad’s birthday, hping t cmbine his lve fr architecture with family time as ur lives grew busier.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered arund the large dining table t plan ur line f attack. We faced thusands f tiny white pieces, each packaged with accuracy in numbered plastic bags, accmpanied by a thick instructin bklet.
The evenings passed quickly, and the building rse befre ur eyes. We culd see ur effrts cming t fruitin, and as we turned t the tedius (乏味的) task f rdering the clred tiles (地砖) n the building’s flr, ur cnversatin t tk a turn.
We were struck by the similarities — and differences — between Leg blcks and life.
We were amazed by hw cmplex the mdel was and its instructin bklet. We realized the bklet itself was a wrk f art, beautiful, but als surprisingly detailed and clear. It prvided us with the cmfrt f certainty. We knew if we fllwed all the instructins, we wuld end up with a mdel that lked exactly like the picture n the bx. If we made a mistake, all we had t d was retrace ur steps, flip back the pages and start again.
Life, hwever, des nt fit tgether s neatly and rarely prvides us with such clear instructins. We talked ver ur respective lives, decisins made, and actins and chices never taken. Dad reflected n a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, n the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the expert architects ding the assembling (组装), but ut in the wrld, we were the nes being assembled. We think we’re in cntrl, but ur chices are shaped by frces beynd ur cntrl. In the face f uncertainty, we have t cntinue, trusting bth in the prcess and the end result.
Smetimes, n the days I return hme, I g t the spare rm t lk at the cmpleted Leg mdel, which brings frth a sense f happiness and cmfrt. It reminds me that life is built slwly, with mistakes, an element f uncertainty and n instructin bk. It shws that cnsideratin, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Like the nw dusty replica (复制品), life itself is nt abut what we materially create r leave behind, but rather hw we lived it.

In a grundbreaking new study, researchers have discvered bttled water sld in stres can cntain 10 t 100 times mre bits f plastic than previusly estimated — nanplastics (纳米塑料) are s tiny that they cannt be seen under a micrscpe.
At 1,000th the average width f a human hair, nanplastics are s tiny they can migrate thrugh the tissues f the digestive tract (消化道) r lungs int the bldstream, distributing ptentially harmful artificial chemicals thrughut the bdy and int cells, experts say.
One liter f water — equal t tw standard-size bttled waters — cntained an average f 240,000 plastic particles (粒子) frm seven types f plastics, f which 90% were identified as nanplastics and the rest were micrplastics, accrding t the new study.
Micrplastics are plymer fragments that can range frm less than 0.2 inch (5millimeters) dwn t l/25,000th f an inch (1 micrmeter). Anything smaller is a nanplastic that must be measured in billinths f a meter.
In the new study, published Mnday in the jurnal Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences, researchers frm Clumbia University presented a new technlgy that can see, cunt and analyze the chemical structure f nanparticles in bttled water.
Instead f 300 per liter, the team behind the latest study fund the actual number f plastic bits in three ppular brands f water sld in the United States t be in between 110,000 and 370,000, if nt higher.
“The innvative new techniques presented in the study pen the dr fr further research t better understand the ptential risks t human health.” said Jane Hulihan, research directr fr Healthy Babies, Bright Futures — nnprfits cmmitted t reducing babies’ expsures t neurtxic (毒害神经的) chemicals, wh was nt invlved in the study.
“Infants and yung children may face the greatest risks, as their develping brains and bdies are ften mre vulnerable t impacts frm txic expsures.” said Hulihan in an email.
Nanplastics are the mst wrrisme type f plastic pllutin fr human health, experts say. That’s because the particles can invade individual cells and tissues in majr rgans, ptentially interrupting cellular prcesses and depsiting harmful chemicals such as bisphenls, phthalates, PFAS, and heavy metals.
There are things peple can d t reduce their expsure t plastics, said Hulihan. “We can avid cnsuming fds and drinks in plastic cntainers. We can wear clthing made frm natural fabrics and buy cnsumer prducts made frm natural materials,” Hulihan said. “We can simply assess the plastic in ur daily lives and find alternatives whenever pssible.”
46. Where can nanplastics be fund in ur bdy?
A. The bld.B. The lung.C. The stmach.D. Almst everywhere.
47. What are the differences between nanplastics and micrplastics?

B. Nanplastics exist in bttled waters, while micrplastics dn’t.
C. Nanplastics can migrate thrugh certain tissues, while micrplastics can’t.
D. Nanplastics are relatively smaller, while micrplastics are much bigger.
48. Why is Jane Hulihan’s statement mentined in paragraph 7?
A. T add mre backgrund infrmatin fr the new study.
B. T make preparatins fr the fllwing cntents.
C. T prvide an bjective evaluatin f the new study.
D. T encurage readers t fcus n the new study.

A. Fragile.B. Optimistic.C. Emtinal.D. Ignrant.
50. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. The discvery f nanplastics in bttled water.B. The health risks f nanplastics in bttled water.
C. The impact f nanplastics n human health.D. The imprtance f reducing plastic use.

Peple’s first memries are all autbigraphical (自传式), r memries f significant experiences in their lives, and these events typically didn’t happen befre the age f 2 r 3. In fact, mst peple can’t remember things frm the first few years f their lives — a phenmenn researchers have called infantile amnesia.
Hwever, research suggests that infants can frm ther kinds f memries. Within the first few days f life, infants (婴儿) can recall their wn mther’s face and distinguish it frm the face f a stranger. A few mnths later, infants can demnstrate that they remember lts f familiar faces by smiling mst at the nes they see mst ften.
But if s, why d peple experience infantile amnesia (健忘症)? Thugh it still isn’t clear whether it’s because we can’t frm autbigraphical memries, r whether we just have n way t get them back, scientists have a few guesses.
One is that autbigraphical memries require yu t have sme sense f self. Researchers have tested this ability using a mirrr recgnitin task called the ruge test. It invlves marking a baby’s nse with a red spt.
Researchers then place the infant in frnt f a mirrr. Infants yunger than 18 mnths just smile at the baby in the reflectin, nt shwing any evidence f recgnizing themselves r the red mark n their face. Between 18 and 24 mnths, infants tuch their wn nse, even lking embarrassed, suggesting that they cnnect the red dt in the mirrr with their wn face — they start t frm sme sense f self.
Anther pssible explanatin is that because infants dn’t have language until later in the secnd year f life, they can’t frm accunt abut their wn lives that they can later recall. Finally, the hippcampus, which is the regin f the brain that’s largely respnsible fr memry, isn’t fully develped in the infancy perid.
Scientists will cntinue t investigate hw these factrs might cntribute t infantile amnesia.
51. What is the functin f the first paragraph?
A. T give an example.B. T bring up the tpic.
C T prvide the backgrund.D. T shw the authr’s attitude.
52. What can infants d in their first few mnths?

B. Memrize the majrity f their family members.
C. Remember a string f events frm the recent past.
D. Identify their wn reflectins in the mirrr.
53. Thrugh the ruge test, scientists discvers that babies between 18 t 24 mnths can ______.
A. enjy playing with their reflectinsB. ignre the marks n their faces
C. see their reflectins as themselvesD. shw a strng interest in the mirrr
54. What culd be a cause f infantile amnesia, accrding t the text?
A. Infants’ inability t recall memries.B. Infants’ immature hippcampus.
C. Infants’ undevelped cmmunicatin skills.D. Infants’ unsteady autbigraphical memries.
55. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. When d babies start remembering things?B. Why is it hard t retrieve lst memries?
C. Hw d kids frm their first memries?D. Why can’t we remember being a baby?
