It all started with a simple questin;“Can I paint yur prtrait (肖像)?”
In the summer f 2015, Brian Petersn was reading the bk Lve Des, abut the pwer f lve in actin, when his quiet was disturbed by a hmeless man. Inspired by the bk, Petersn made an unexpected decisin: He was ging t intrduce himself. In that first cnversatin, Petersn learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris wh failed t pursue a career in music and ended up being hmeless.
“I saw beauty n the face f a man wh hadn’t shaved in prbably a year, had vergrwn fingernails, and prbably hadn’t had a shwer in clse t a year. ”Even thugh Petersn hadn’t piked up a paintbrush in abut eight years, he asked if he culd paint Faris’s prtrait. Faris said yes.
Petersn’s cnnectin with Faris led him t frm Faces f Santa Ana, a nnprfit rganizatin fcused n befriending and painting prtraits f members f the cmmunity wh are unhused. Wrking frm a black-and-white pht f the subject, Petersn chses clrs inspired by the subject’s persnality and life stry, creating an impressive prtrait.
Petersn sells the striking artwrk, signed by bth subject and artist, dividing the prceeds and putting half int what he calls a“lve accunt”fr his mdel. He then helps peple use the mney t get back n their feet. Many f Petersn’s new friends use the dnatins t secure immediate necessities. But Petersn has learned nt t make assumptins abut what a persn needs mst. “I’ve made a mistake thinking I knew what peple wanted, ” he says, “but why dn’t we just ask them?”
Petersn has discvered that there’s mre t the finished prducts than the mney they bring t smene wh’s dwn and ut. The buyers tend t cnnect t the stry f the persn in the painting, finding similarities and ften friendship with smene they might have therwise verlked. “Peple ften tell me, ‘I was the ne that wuld crss the street. But I see hmeless peple differently nw, ’ ”Petersn says.
      4. What brught Petersn and Faris tgether?
      A. Beauty n Faris’ face.B. Inspiratin frm a bk.
      C. Petersn’s passin fr art.D. Faris’ suffering in his life.

New students at Etn, starting the schl year in September, are nt allwed t take smartphnes with them. Instead, they will each be given a “dumb” Nkia phne that is unable t access the Internet and nly allws calls and texts.
Students might blame the psychlgist Jnathan Haidt, wh ppularised the idea that smartphnes are respnsible fr rising rates f mental health prblems amng yung peple. Teachers at nearly tw-thirds f secndary schls nw say they have rules that prevent students frm using their phnes during the day.
But is there really anything wrng with spending a bit f time watching vides n scial media? Or taking yur phne ut while yu’re in the supermarket queue t see funny news? We might need meaning and purpse and psychlgical richness in ur lives, but surely we need a bit f pleasure t. A study published in April in PLS One fund that spending 20 minutes n scial media r watching vides n YuTube nt nly cntributed t n negative stress respnse, but was assciated with a decrease in bth heart rate and crtisl (皮质醇).
What we get wrng is thinking that we are relaxing just because scrlling (浏览) mindlessly thrugh scial media is unprductive and feels like “time ut”. There is a significant difference between ding things like being with ur lved nes, spending time in nature, r reading a great bk and emtinal numbing (麻木). As the psychiatrist Anna Lembke argues in her bk Dpamine Natin, by endlessly seeking pleasure and stimulatin frm ur smartphne — which she describes as the “mdern-day hypdermic (皮下注射) needle” — we becme addicted t such stimulatin, and find it harder t find jy in ther less immediate things.
But als, by never putting ur phnes dwn and never giving urselves a break frm endless stimulatin, we are nt able t g int the kind f quiet brain state that allws mind-wandering, creativity and deep reflectin.
As we all knw, if yu are nt paying fr it, then yu are the prduct, and businessmen in the marketplace f attentin are cnstantly adjusting the ways in which they ccupy ur brain space. We must learn t get mre creative and intentinal abut the ways we chse t relax urselves and perhaps, even, t enjy sme gd-ld fashined bredm.
      8. Why is the schl Etn mentined in paragraph 1?
      A. T raise a dubt.B. T explain a phenmenn.
      C. T intrduce a tpic.D. T launch a campaign.
9 What des the study published in April in PLS One suggest?
      A. Cnstant use f scial media is beneficial t health.
      B. Prper use f scial media can reduce stress.
      C. Watching YuTube vides increases heart rate.
      D. Spending time n scial media has little effect n peple.
      10. Why des Anna Lembke describe the smartphne as the “mdern-day hypdermic needle”?
      A. Because smartphnes can bring new energy.
      B. Because peple rely t much n smartphnes.
      C. Because smartphnes might relieve pain quickly.
      D. Because peple will get medical help frm smartphnes.
      11. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
      A. We shuld pay fr using smartphnes.B. Businessmen ften cntrl ur thinking.
      C. Bredm is unacceptable in mdern life.D. We shuld chse ur relaxing ways wisely.
      D
We’ve all been there: thse times yu need t argue yur pint f view t smene wh yu knw disagrees with yu. Yu immediately g t yur keybard and start t type ut that 280-character tweet, the Facebk reply, r a paragraphs-lng email. Surely the reasn, lgic, and strng pwer f yur written wrds will cnvince whever it is wh disagrees with yu t see yur pint f view. But new research suggests a different idea.
That research was cnducted by Juliana Schreder, assistant prfessr f University f Califrnia, Berkeley, and her clleagues. In Schreder’s study f almst 300 peple, participants were asked t watch, listen, and read arguments abut subjects they agreed r disagreed with. They were asked t judge the character f the cmmunicatr and the quality f the argument. Schreder’s team fund that the participants wh watched r listened t the cmmunicatr were less dismissive (抵触的) f their claims than when they read that cmmunicatr’s same argument.
The idea fr her study came frm a newspaper article abut a plitician. One f us read a speech that was printed in a newspaper frm a plitician with whm he strngly disagreed. The next week, he heard the exact same speech playing n a radi statin. He was shcked by hw different his reactin was tward the plitician when he read the speech cmpared t when he heard it. When he read the statement, the plitician seemed iditic, but when he heard it spken, the plitician actually sunded reasnable.
S in the wrkplace, speaking t smene in persn ften invlves nthing mre than walking a few drs dwn t their ffice. And that’s exactly what yu shuld d if yu need t cnvince that bss r clleague f why yur blueprint fr the cmpany r prject is the right ne.
Only as a last way shuld yu try t cmmunicate with smene wh yu disagree with ver scial media. Twitter’s limited text allwance and scial media users’ shrt attentin make arguing yur pint an uphill battle.
      12. What’s the result f the research?
      A. Written wrds are mre lgical and reasnable.B. Peple prefer t cmmunicate with key bard.
      C. The participants prefer reading an argument.D. Cmmunicatin wrks better rally.
      13. Why is the plitician mentined in paragraph 3?
      A. T intrduce the tpic fr discussin.B. T summarize the previus paragraphs.
      C. T explain why Schreder cnducted the research.D. T intrduce the plitician’s speech.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “iditic” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. LgicalB. Practical.C. Silly.D. Frightened.
15 What can we infer frm the last tw paragraphs?
      A. T persuade yur bss, yu need t walk t his ffice and leave a message.
      B. It’s difficult t fully explain yur pints due t scial media’s limitatin.
      C. Arguing ver scial media is mre cnvenient than speaking in persn.
      D. Cmmunicating with thers ver scial media is encuraged.

New students at Etn, starting the schl year in September, are nt allwed t take smartphnes with them. Instead, they will each be given a “dumb” Nkia phne that is unable t access the Internet and nly allws calls and texts.
