Free diving is a high-risk sprt. Divers, swimming underwater withut xygen tanks, frequently black ut frm lw xygen and put themselves at risk f drwning. Marine mammals such as seals, by cntrast, can spend mst f their lives belw the surface withut such risks. Seals can hld their breath fr 20 t 30 minutes n average and sme even fr ver an hur. A March 20th Science paper explains why: seals can apparently sense hw much xygen they have in their bld and plan their actins accrdingly.
When a mammal hlds its breath, xygen levels drp while carbn dixide rises. In humans lw xygen mstly des nt ring any alarm bells n their wn — instead, high levels f carbn dixide eventually prduce the unpleasant urge t breathe. As seals dive mre frequently — and fr lnger — than humans d, the range f carbn dixide in their bdies varies mre widely. That led Chris McKnight, a marine bilgist, t wnder if the animals culd als sense xygen.
T test this, he and his team placed six wild-caught seals in a tank cntaining an underwater feeding statin and a breathing chamber (fr surfacing) at ppsite ends. The air in that chamber was then set t ne f fur cnditins: nrmal air (21% xygen and 0.04% carbn dixide, plus ther gases); air with reduced xygen (11%); elevated xygen (50%); and elevated carbn dixide (8%). If the seals were, like humans, mre sensitive t carbn dixide, their behavir wuld be identical in all but the final cnditin.
The results suggested therwise. With mre xygen, the seals extended their dives by an average f 14 secnds. They shrtened them by rughly half a minute with less xygen. High carbn dixide levels, by cntrast, had n significant effect.
Dr. McKnight suggests that the ability t sense lw xygen may be cmmn in marine mammals, pssibly as a defense against drwning. Mre research is needed t understand hw widespread this ability is and hw diving animals perceive xygen. While expert divers use the sensatin f an appraching black-ut frm lw xygen as a cue t resurface, hw seals d this is still a mystery.
12. The underlined phrase “black ut” in paragraph 1 mst likely means _______.
A. turn paleB. sink slwlyC. stp breathingD. pass ut
13. What mtivates Chris McKnight t study xygen-sensing ability f seals?
A. Lwer xygen tlerance in human divers.
B. Seals’ ability t dive fr extended perids.
C. Seals’ wide variatins in CO2 levels during dives.
D. Humans’ strng reactin t rising carbn dixide.
14. What is true accrding t paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
A. Elevated xygen lengthens seals’ dive duratin.
B. Lw xygen causes seals t dive 14 secnds lnger.
C. Seals priritize CO2 sensitivity ver xygen detectin.
D. Seals’ reactins were presumed exactly equal t humans’.
15. Which remains unknwn abut seals accrding t the text?
A. The duratin f hlding their breath.
B. The reasn why they can dive safely.
C. The ability t adjust the timing f resurfacing.
D. The mechanism fr triggering their resurfacing.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. D
