The Primary Engineer MacRbert Medal cmpetitin asks the UK students ne questin: “If yu were an engineer, what wuld yu d?” And 12-year-ld Rebecca Yung had her answer right away. The yung Scttish student wanted t help members f her cmmunity facing hmelessness.
Yung entered the Primary Engineer MacRbert Medal cmpetitin as ne f 70,000 engineering designs and wn the Cmmendatin Medal, an award determined by public vte. She als wn a silver medal in the main cmpetitin. Yung invented a slar-pwered heated blanket with the gal f helping unhused peple keep warm.
Yung started by researching sleeping bags and backpacks, curius as t hw they culd be designed t ffer even mre warmth. Of curse, heated blankets d exist, thugh they must be plugged (插入) int pwer supply t functin t their full ptential — a luxury hmeless individuals ften d nt have.
With assistance frm an engineering firm, Yung presented a prttype (模型) fr the heated blanket. The design is integrated int a backpack and pwered by the sun, allwing fr easy n-the-g use. While simplistic in applicatin, Yung’s design is thrugh.
Using the average human sleep time f eight hurs as a required run time, she cnducted in-depth research n the mst suitable batteries and slar panels t use in the prttype. The inventin als includes a cntrl circuit that autmatically alternates the blanket between n-and-ff states based n temperature readings t cnserve battery life. The blanket itself is als designed similarly t a sleeping bag t allw fr heat retentin and t keep users warm amid any shifts r mvements. The uter frame f the blanket’s backpack als ffers mre strage space t the user.
While created with the intentin t supprt peple sleeping n the streets, Yung als said the design culd be applicable fr camping, hiking, r traveling.
“It felt amazing t see my drawing turn int smething real. I never thught that culd happen. Hmelessness is a big prblem that needs fixing, and if yu see a hmeless persn, help in any way yu can,” Yung said.
      4. What mtivated Yung t enter the cmpetitin?
      A. T win a medal.B. T keep hmeless peple warm.
      C. T imprve her engineering skills.D. T design a new type f sleeping bags.

Encuraging bilingualism (双语能力) at hme can have many cgnitive benefits, which may be particularly helpful t kids with autism spectrum disrder (孤独症谱系障碍) r ASD, new research frm the University f Miami’s Cllege f Arts and Sciences indicates.
A team f researchers led by Celia Rmer, a graduate student in clinical psychlgy, explred the rle f bilingualism in 112 children, including typically develping children and children with autism, between the ages f 7 t 12 years ld. Overall, they fund that children wh spke tw r mre languages ften had strnger executive (执行的) functining skills. This means they are able t cntrl impulses (冲动) and t switch between different tasks mre easily than children wh nly spke ne language.
The results are significant because executive functining skills are a key challenge fr children n the spectrum but are imprtant fr all kids t thrive in schl and later in the wrkplace. Yet, the team fund the benefits f speaking mre than ne language were nt limited t children with autism.
The study als lked at the impact f multilingualism n cre symptms f autism, including perspective taking, restricted and repetitive behavirs and scial cmmunicatin.
“We als fund that multilingual children have enhanced perspective taking skills, r the ability t understand smene else’s thughts r pint f view,” Rmer said.
An idea called jint activatin frm the field f neurscience can help explain the results. Prir research suggests that the bilingual brain has tw languages cnstantly active and cmpeting. As a result the daily experience f shifting between these languages is assciated with enhanced executive cntrl. This cncept is als knwn as the “bilingual advantage”, accrding t the researchers.
“If yu have t juggle tw languages, yu have t suppress ne in rder t use the ther. That’s the idea that inhibitin — r the ability t stp yurself frm ding smething — might be enhanced by knwing tw languages,” said anther researcher.
      8. What benefit des bilingualism bring t children with ASD?
      A. Scial skill enhancement.B. Academic perfrmance bst.
      C. Cgnitive ability imprvement.D. Language learning acceleratin.
      9. What can we say abut executive functining skills?
      A. They cntribute t better leadership skills.
      B. They affect children’s future wrk life.
      C. They determine children’s language level.
      D. They enhance children’s physical abilities.
      10. What may happen when speaking tw languages?
      A. Learning delay.B. Language cnfusin.
      C. Delayed multitasking.D. Brain language cmpetitin.
      11. What des the underlined wrd “juggle” in the last paragraph mean?
      A. Emply.B. Switch.C. Adapt.D. Explre.

McGill University researchers have discvered that changes in cluds are slightly relieving glbal warming. While greenhuse gases cntinue t cause temperatures t rise, a reductin in lw-clud cver ver land has brught abut a mdest reductin f the amunt f heat being trapped clse t grund level.
“We started this research t bservatinally cnfirm the increase f greenhuse effect f the Earth atmsphere,” said Yi Huang, assciate prfessr in McGill University’s Department f Atmspheric and Oceanic Sciences. “We indeed cnfirm that, althugh t ur surprise we als fund an ffsetting (抵消的) effect due t changes in cluds.”
“Withut these clud changes, the surface wuld warm even faster,” said Lei Liu, graduate student in McGill University’s Department f Atmspheric and Oceanic Sciences and the first authr f this study. “This wrk ffers bservatinal truth abut hw cluds affect warming, which can be used t imprve climate mdels and guide envirnmental plicies,” Liu added.
T discver this surprising effect, the team used the measurements f a key radiative instrument, the Atmspheric Emitted Radiance Interfermeter (AERI), alng with satellite data, climate mdels and a technique called “ptimal spectral fingerprinting” c-designed by Yi Huang and Lei Liu t islate the effects f cluds frm ther atmspheric prcesses.
The researchers fcused n lngwave radiatin, the heat energy the Earth emits back int the atmsphere. Usually, cluds trap sme f this heat and send it back t the grund. But as the climate warms, there are fewer lw cluds in sme areas, which means less heat is returned t the surface.
The Department f Atmspheric and Oceanic Sciences f the university lks t cntinue using their critical data fr understanding reginal climate dynamics and enhancing climate mdelling.
“Our research emphasizes the value f precise, lng-term climate bservatins,” said Jhn Gyakum, a prfessr. “This is essential fr understanding the Earth’s respnse t glbal warming and making infrmed decisins fr future generatins.”
The researchers cautined that their discvery des nt thrw dubt n glbal warming. “It’s like having a heater that adjusts itself a little,” the researchers explained. “But even with this adjustment, the rm is still heating up.”
      12. What des the reductin in lw-clud cver ver land lead t?
      A. An increase in glbal warming.B. A significant rise in temperature.
      C A slight decrease f grund-level heat.D. A cmplete stp in the greenhuse effect.
      13. Accrding t Lei Liu, what can their findings apply t?
      A. Imprving clud cverage glbally.B. Lwering greenhuse gas emissins.
      C. Frecasting shrt-term weather patterns.D. Imprving climate predictin mdels.
      14. Why did the researchers mentin the heater?
      A. T cautin the public.B. T prve their discvery useful but little.
      C. T praise their findings.D. T emphasize its imprtance.
      15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. The Rle f Cluds in Relieving Glbal Warming
      B. The Imprtance f Lng-term Climate Observatins
      C. The Impact f Greenhuse Gases n Glbal Warming
