That turquise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung ut. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. “We gt intentinal abut where we spent ur time,” Kristin says. “We became ‘frnt yard peple’.”
Neighbrs began t stp by t intrduce themselves and sit dwn fr a chat. Kristin invited peple t jin her at the table fr cffee r iced tea. Then neighbrs asked Kristin if their family culd put a picnic table in their frnt yard t. A mvement was brn. “It was a simple way t slw dwn and cnnect with thers,” she says. The turquise table was inviting and had a shared feel.
Peple ften hesitate t invite thers int their hmes. They think their huse is t messy, it’s nt big enugh r they dn’t have enugh time. “Our perfectinism can cause us t miss ut n the jy f cnnecting with thers,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure.
She likes hw it enables her t take a small step tward easing lneliness and building relatinships in her cmmunity. “Peple’s greatest need is t knw that they are lved and that they belng,” she says.

When was the last time yu ate and nly fcused n eating? Many f us eat while wrking, fiddling with ur smartphnes r n the g. Distracted eating, as it is termed in scientific literature, cincides with greater flexibility in where we can eat ur fd and the accessibility f distractins. As a result, "yu get this weird blend f different activities. They're n lnger fixed t certain places and times," said Ltte van Dillen, a prfessr f scial psychlgy at Leiden University. "Yu can d everything anywhere at any mment. That's nt gd."
When van Dillen and her clleagues cnducted studies f large, representative samples f peple in the Netherlands, they fund a "surprisingly cnsistent" result: Rughly 70 t 75 percent f the time, peple are distracted and ding smething else when they eat.
Distracted eating culd have adverse (不利的) health cnsequences. Studies shw that when we are distracted, we tend t eat mre. And when we are dne eating, we are mre likely t eat again sner. In turn, regular distracted eating is assciated with weight gain.
At the same time, distractins prevent us frm fully tasting r enjying what we are eating by disrupting signals in ur brain. Despite eating mre, "it's kind f tragic that yu're nt enjying it s much," van Dillen said.
When we eat, ur guts(肠道)getting full, a prcess which takes abut 20 minutes. But being distracted makes it harder t release satiety hrmnes that signal t ur brains that we are experience these satiety signals. Distractins add cgnitive lad t ur brains that cmpetes with and reduces ur ability t sense nt nly the amunt f fd and hw full we are getting, but als its taste.
In an early experiment frm a 2013 study, van Dillen and her clleagues had 42 participants sweeten their wn lemnade with sugary syrup t taste. Sme were distracted by an easy cgnitive task (memrizing a ne-digit number), while thers had a harder ne (memrizing a seven-digit number). Thse challenged with the harder mental task added a whpping 50 percent mre f the sugary syrup but did nt reprt their drink as sweeter than participants ding the easier mental task.
In a fllw-up 2023 study published in the jurnal Appetite, van Dillen and her clleagues put 46 participants in an FMRI brain scanner and fed them sugar water f different sweetness levels thrugh a bundle f tubes. When participants had a mre challenging cgnitive task, they rated the strng sugar slutin as less sweet than when the task was easy. In shrt, distractins have a "sledgehammer effect" n ur senses, van Dillen said.
In a 2024 study, van Dillen and her clleagues fund evidence that distractins cause therwise enjyable activities such as eating a snack, reading a nvel r watching TV, t feel less enjyable than we expected. Feeling underwhelmed, we are mre likely t vercnsume t make up fr this shrtfall in enjyment, engaging in what researchers call "hednic(快乐的) cmpensatin."
      28. Which f the fllwing behavirs can be cnsidered as "distracted eating"?
      A. Yu eat dinner at a fixed place and time.
      B. Yu eat snacks while wrking n yur essay.
      C. Yu have breakfast in a relaxing envirnment.
      D. Yu have lunch at schl withut ding anything else.
      29. What can we knw abut "satiety hrmnes" frm paragraph 5?
      A. They make distractins. B. They stimulate appetite.
      C. They add cgnitive lad. D. They send satiety signals.
      30. Hw did van Dillen and her clleagues carry ut their experiments?
      A. By cnducting interviews. B. By testing effectiveness.
      C. By making cmparisns. D. By distributing surveys.
      31. What can we learn frm the studies?
      A. Distracted eating prmpts us t taste mre flavrs.
      B. Fully experiencing the fd can help us better enjy it.
      C. Distractins fail t change hw the brain prcesses taste.
      D. The fd will be tasteless if we chse t d harder wrk.
      D
Amid munting glbal plastic pllutin--a crisis wrsened by 400 millin tns f annual waste, 46% f which are single-use PET plastics--researchers have engineered PETase Plus, a biengineered enzyme (酶) capable f degrading PET plymers(聚合物)90% faster than natural enzymes. Published in Nature Bitechnlgy, this breakthrugh, achieved thrugh multinatinal cperatin, culd redefine waste management by transfrming nn-recyclable plastics int reusable raw materials. Yet, its significance extends far beynd labratries, rking heated debates amng scientists, plicymakers, and envirnmentalists.
Unlike cnventinal recycling, which demands energy-intensive prcesses (exceeding 250℃) t melt plastics and prduces useless materials, PETase Plus perates under mild cnditins. By degrading PET's mlecular bnds, it breaks dwn plastics int base cmpnents that can be re-integrated int high-quality prducts r even bifuels. Accrding t Dr. Liam Harper, lead authr f the study, “This methd cuts energy cnsumptin by 60% and carbn emissins by 80%, ffering industries a cst-effective and ec-friendly alternative t traditinal methds."
Hwever, critics cautin against unchecked ptimism. While PETase Plus excels in cntrlled lab envirnments, applying it fr industrial r envirnmental use risks unintended eclgical harm. Dr. Emily Carter, a bichemist, warns, “Engineered enzymes released int landfills r ceans might als degrade natural plymers, destabilizing sil structures r marine ecsystems. Withut prper restrictins, the slutin t plastic waste culd becme an eclgical disaster,”
Ethical cnflicts further cmplicate its adptin. Envirnmental advcates insist plastic manufacturers--respnsible fr 70% f glbal PET prductin--shuld fund large-scale applicatin f the technlgy. Hwever, industry leaders argue that gvernments must prvide financial supprt t encurage innvatin. Meanwhile, develping natins, where waste management system is underdevelped, view PETase Plus as a ptential lifeline, thugh fears spread that wealthy cuntries might nt share the technlgy.
As research advances, PETase Plus is facing a challenge: a scientific success shadwed by ethical and eclgical dilemmas. Its success relies nt merely n bichemical efficiency but n multi-party cperatin t balance innvatin with caring fr ur planet.
      32. Accrding t paragraph 2, what is ne advantage f PETase Plus ver traditinal recycling methds?
      A. It functins effectively at relatively lw temperatures.
      B. It prduces bifuels straight frm plastic waste.
      C. It remves the need fr industrial funding.
      D. It reduces the cst by 60%.
      33. What cncern d critics emphasize abut PETase Plus?
      A. Its funding resurce is still nt clear. B. It may disturb natural ecsystems.
      C. It requires expensive lab equipment. D. Its mechanism is nt yet understd.
      34. Why des the authr qute Dr. Emily Carter?
      A. T stress the necessity fr eclgical regulatins.
      B. T questin the enzyme's degradatin efficiency.
      C. T advcate fr industry-led innvatin.
      D. T highlight the technical limitatins f PETase Plus.
      35. What can be a pssible result f the future applicatin f PETase Plus?
      A. Develping natins will reject the technlgy due t high csts.
      B. Ethical cnflicts might prevent its widespread applicatin.
      C. Gvernments will cease funding traditinal recycling.
      D. Eclgical risks will be remved.

Therefre, it seems hardly surprising that thse wh wrry abut taking tests d systematically wrse than thse wh d nt.
What is, perhaps, surprising, accrding t research published recently in Psychlgical Science by Maria Thebald at the Leibniz Institute fr Research and Infrmatin in Educatin and her clleagues, is that it is nt the pressure f the exam hall that causes the prblem. ___37___.
Dr. Thebald nce suppsed that if anxiety was truly affecting a student’s ability t transfer knwn infrmatin frm brain t paper via pen, then thse with high levels f it wuld perfrm wrse in a real exam than in a mck (模拟的) exam. 38 . Anxiety n the day f the test did nt predict exam perfrmance at all. What did predict the perfrmance was the level f knwledge a student displayed in the mck exam. ___39___, regardless f hw anxius they were n the day.
What actually influenced students, it turned ut, were high levels f anxiety during the weeks befre the exam tk place. The greater a student’s anxiety in the days befre the exam, the lwer his r her knwledge-gain was during that perid. 40 .
T reduce this anxiety, she prpses a tw-fld strategy fr students. First, they can raise their belief in their wn abilities by reminding themselves f just hw much they knw. Secnd, they can decrease the significance f the test in their hearts.
      A. All peple d nt like exams
      B. Instead, it is the pressure f revisin

“Did yu write yur thank-yu ntes?” I asked my sn Jn.
“N, nt yet, Mm,” Jn replied, rlling his eyes.
He prmised t d it when he gt back frm Kim's huse. Hwever, I demanded that he nt leave the huse until he finished writing a nte t everyne he came in cntact with during the jb interview.

Jn was hme n Christmas break frm cllege and had just finished interviewing with his first-chice cmpany in Cleveland, Ohi. It was a rare pprtunity cnsidering that jbs were in shrt supply.
The pwer f a thank-yu nte is smething I drilled int my by frm the time he was ld enugh t hld a pencil. It didn't matter if it was fr a birthday, Christmas r graduatin. Every gift had t be acknwledged with sincere gratitude within twenty-fur hurs.
Grwing up, my mm was a stickler fr thank-yu ntes. But she phrased it in such a way that it came acrss nt as a threat but as a privilege. She'd say, “Yur wrds f sincere gratitude have the pwer t change smene's life fr the better—even if it's just fr a mment.” Her advice changed my life, and it was my hpe that it wuld change Jn's life as well.
After an hur, Jn emerged frm his rm and handed ver eight thank-yu ntes. T my delight, they were all sincere and heartfelt, even the ne t the receptinist wh had been less than friendly. Befre Jn left t visit Kim, he turned t me and annunced that he was pretty sure a thank-yu nte t the CEO r the receptinist wasn't ging t land him the jb. With a smile, I tld him t wait and see.
Jn was twenty-ne years ld, and I felt flish telling a grwn man what t d, but I als didn't want him living in ur basement fr the rest f his life!
