shps with 11 wrkers, but Allamby had becme uneasy, lnging fr smething mre. Therefre, at the age f 34,
he decided t g fr his bachelr’s degree in business management.
After taking classes part-time ver the next five years, Allamby was tld he had t take bilgy t get his
degree, which later turned ut t be the best thing that ever happened. Bilgy classes reawakened a childhd

Brn in East Cleveland, Ohi, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-hme mther and a father wh sld hme
gds dr-t-dr. His schl didn’t ffer the advanced science classes that might have led him n a premed (医
学预科的) path. Even if it had, ding well in schl culd prve dangerus. “Yu culd get int a lt f truble just
fr being the class nerd (讨厌的人),” Allamby said. S he set aside the thughts f becming a dctr and started
      fixing cars instead.
      第 4页/共 13页
But a different Carl Allamby walked int that bilgy class at age 39. He was ready t live his dream. With the
supprt f his family he sn decided t skip business schl t take science classes. Becming a dctr was late
and he wuld becme a nurse instead, he reasned. But Allamby’s chemistry prfessr tld him “Why nt a dctr?
Yu have a great talent fr the wrk. Yu will g a lng way.” The prfessr was right and Allamby did very well.
In 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, and then he started at Nrtheast Ohi Medical University. In 2019,
Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD. He tk a jb in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akrn General.
“Hw many peple can d smething s brand-new at such a late stage in their life?” he said. “My age and

Bees are amng the mst fascinating insects n Earth. Nt nly d they play a crucial rle in pllinating plants,
but they als have a highly rganized scial structure. A typical hneybee clny cnsists f three types f bees:
the queen, the wrkers, and the drnes. Each has a specific rle that ensures the survival f the hive.
The queen bee is the mther f all bees in the clny. Her primary jb is t lay eggs — up t 2,000per day!
Wrker bees, all female, are respnsible fr gathering nectar, making hney, and prtecting the hive. They als take
care f the queen and the yung bees. Drnes, the male bees, have nly ne purpse: t mate with a new queen.
Once they fulfill this rle, they die shrtly after.
Bees express their ideas thrugh a unique “waggle dance”. When a wrker bee finds a gd surce f nectar,
she returns t the hive and perfrms this dance t shw the directin and distance f the flwers. Scientists believe
this dance is ne f the mst sphisticated frms f insect cmmunicatin.
Unfrtunately, bee ppulatins are declining due t pesticides, habitat lss, and climate change. This is
alarming because nearly ne-third f the fd we eat depends n bee pllinatin. Withut bees, many fruits,
vegetables, and nuts culd disappear frm ur diets.
      8. What is the main duty f the queen bee?
      A. T cllect nectar frm flwers.
      B. T prduce thusands f eggs daily.
      C. T prtect the hive frm enemies.
      D. T perfrm the waggle dance.
      9. Hw d wrker bees cmmunicate the lcatin f fd?
      A. By making lud buzzing sunds.
      B. By releasing a special scent.
      C. By perfrming a “waggle dance.”
      D. By tuching each ther’s antennae.
      10. What can we infer abut drnes?
      A. They live lnger than wrker bees.
      B. They prtect the hive frm predatrs.
      C. They help in making hney.
      D. They are essential fr the clny’s reprductin.
      11. What is the main purpse f the passage?
      A. T describe the rles and imprtance f bees.
      第 6页/共 13页
      B. T explain why bees are disappearing.
      C. T argue that bees are the smartest insects.
      D. T cmpare different types f bee clnies.

In recent years, a new and exciting technlgy has emerged — quantum dts. These are tiny semicnductr
particles, nly a few nanmeters in size. T put it int perspective, a human hair is abut 80,000 nanmeters thick,
while quantum dts are typically between 2 t 10 nanmeters. Their small size gives them unique ptical and
electrnic prperties, making them a ht tpic in scientific research.
Scientists have made remarkable findings abut quantum dts. Research shws that quantum dts can emit
light f different clrs depending n their size. Smaller quantum dts emit blue light, while larger nes emit red
light. This prperty is due t the quantum cnfinement effect. When electrns are cnfined in such a small space as
a quantum dt, their energy levels becme discrete, and the energy difference between these levels determines the
wavelength f the emitted light. This discvery has pened up new pssibilities in many fields.
The methds used t study quantum dts are rather sphisticated, which need prper envirnment, strict
cnditins and varius techniques. One cmmn technique is chemical synthesis (合成). Scientists create quantum
dts in a cntrlled chemical envirnment. Fr example, they use rganic slvents (溶剂) and precursr materials.
By precisely cntrlling the reactin cnditins such as temperature, reactin time, and the cncentratin f
reactants, they can prduce quantum dts with cnsistent sizes and prperties. After synthesis, varius
characterizatin techniques are emplyed. Electrn micrscpy is used t bserve the size and shape f the
quantum dts, while spectrscpy helps t analyze their ptical prperties.
The applicatins f quantum dts are extensive. In the field f display technlgy, quantum dts are used t
enhance the clr accuracy and brightness f TVs and mnitrs. Quantum dt displays can prduce a wider range
f clrs cmpared t traditinal displays, prviding viewers with a mre vivid visual experience. In the medical
field, they are used as flurescent labels in bilgical imaging. Quantum dts can be attached t specific mlecules
in the bdy, and when illuminated with light, they emit flurescence, allwing dctrs t bserve bilgical
prcesses at a cellular level mre clearly.
Lking ahead, scientists are fcused n several research directins. One key area is imprving the stability
and bicmpatibility f quantum dts fr medical applicatins. Althugh they shw great prmise in bilgical
imaging, there are cncerns abut their ptential txicity (毒性). Scientists are als explring new ways t integrate
quantum dts int mre cmplex devices, such as quantum dt-based slar cells. The gal is t develp mre
      第 7页/共 13页
efficient and sustainable energy surces using the unique prperties f quantum dts.
      12. Accrding t the passage, what determines the clr f the light emitted by quantum dts?
      A. The type f rganic slvents used in synthesis.
      B. The size f the quantum dts.
      C. The temperature during the synthesis prcess.
      D. The cncentratin f reactants.
      13. The underlined wrd “sphisticated” in Paragraph 3 is clsest in meaning t ________.
      A. cmplex B. simple C. traditinal D. new
      14. What can we infer frm the passage abut the future f quantum dts?
A They will replace all traditinal display technlgies sn.
B Their use in medical applicatins will be limited due t txicity.
      C. Scientists will cntinue t explre their ptential in different fields.
      D. Quantum dt-based slar cells has been already widely used.
      15. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. The histry f quantum dt develpment.
      B. The prperties, research, applicatins, and future directins f quantum dts.
      C. The cmparisn between quantum dts and traditinal materials.
      D. The txicity and safety cncerns f quantum dts.
