Are yu upset because yu bught a phne less than a year ag and nw have t charge it twice a day? In the future, a sht t the battery might slve the prblem, a recent study suggested.
Researchers at Fudan University fund that injecting an rganic lithium salt int used-up batteries culd restre lst lithium ins (锂离子), greatly extending their lifespan. The study was published n February 12 in the leading science jurnal Nature.
Lithium-in batteries cnsist f fur parts: the tw electrdes (a cathde and an ande), a separatr, and electrlyte cntaining lithium ins. During nrmal use, lithium ins carry energy between the cathde and ande. Over time, hwever, sme lithium ins frm depsits, becming what scientists call “dead lithium.” This prcess gradually decreases the cncentratin f lithium ins in the electrlyte. The battery’s capacity t hld a charge is, therefre, reduced. When a battery’s capacity drps belw 80% f its initial value, the battery is cnsidered t have failed. It has been this way since the inventin f the lithium-in battery in 1990.
But instead f dead batteries, the Chinese researchers saw them as sick patients. As lng as the malfunctining part can be treated, the battery culd be restred t full health.
T “heal” the batteries, the team injected them with an rganic lithium salt. The chemical reactivated “dead” lithium ins and lengthened the batteries’ lifespans. Because the prcess can be repeated, the number f charges culd jump frm between 500 t 2,000 t as many as 60,000. This has never been achieved befre.
Apart frm slving yur phne’s battery prblem, the magical treatment culd als benefit China and the wrld in many ther ways.
