The first time Jessica Pate swam beside a manta (蝠鲼) ray ff Flrida’s suthern cast, the 2.5-meter-wide
fish flipped belly-up and slwed t watch her. “I was kind f bsessed after that,” Pate says. The marine bilgist

years t studying mantas and their kin.
Pate’s wrk is paying ff. Her team has since discvered the first knwn manta nursery in Flrida’s waters.
And it’s nw clear that an elusive cusin f mantas—the sicklefin devil ray (镰鳍魟) — als calls the western
Atlantic hme.
Mantas and devil rays are bth rays (魟) that includes 11 species, nearly all f which are endangered. That’s
partly because these rays have slw reprductive cycles, Pate says, and partly because the animals are susceptible
t injury frm bat strikes r entanglement in fishing gear.
Befre Pate began her wrk with ceanic mantas ff Flrida, there was nly ne published study f sightings
in the regin. “There’s just s little awareness that manta rays are present,” she says, which makes cnservatin
effrts difficult.
S Pate cnducts aerial drne surveys, gathers accunts f citizen sightings and spends cuntless hurs
tagging, tracking and measuring the creatures. In 2020, her team reprted the first knwn manta ray nursery in the
western Atlantic—and the third nursery bserved glbally. Unfrtunately, it's lcated in a heavily ppulated castal
area ff Suth Flrida, where recreatinal fishing is ppular.
The prject has since launched an utreach campaign t build awareness f fishing best practices, such as
keeping an eye ut fr mantas and reeling in lines until they've safely passed by. In 2018, a diver sent Pate a pht
f a manta that turned ut t be a sicklefin devil ray—the first cnfirmed sighting f this species in the western
Atlantic Ocean. Pate’s fllw-up analysis f aerial survey and fisheries bservatin data cllected frm 1996 t
2022 turned up 361 sicklefin devils in the western Atlantic and Gulf f Mexic.
Knwing that sicklefin devils ppulate the regin, scientists can start filling in knwledge gaps abut this
species. Pate hpes that her team’s cntinued effrts will help prtect mantas and their kin by making the rays “as
icnic and recgnizable as manatees (海牛) and sea turtles.”
28. What inspired Pate t fund the cnservatin grup Flrida Manta Prject?
A.The ecnmical benefits driven by fishery.
B.The great cncern frm the envirnmentalists.
C.Her persnal encunter experience with the mantas.
D.The deterirating living envirnment fr marine lives.
29. Why was the cnservatin fr mantas challenging befre Pate’s research?
A.Because mantas were nt cnsidered endangered species.
B. Because mantas were t aggressive t be tracked and studied.
C.Because the lcal citizens did nt supprt cnservatin effrts.
D.Because there was minimal awareness that manta were present in the regin.
30. Hw des the cnservatin grup cnduct their survey and research?
A. By using multiple methds. B. By relying n underwater cameras.
C. By using satellite images exclusively. D. By fcusing n histrical data frm fisheries nly.

A.The discvery f new species f rays in the western Atlantic Ocean.

First impressins can be harsh. One mistake, and yu might feel like yu ’ ll frever be seen as an idit in
smene’s eyes. Hwever, I believe reality is kinder than that.
Making a first impressin is like trying t keep a dr pen with yur ft. Many encunters with strangers
are brief and may never happen again. Smetimes that can be a blessing: If the persn yu meet desn’t care t
remember yu, yu ’ll quickly fade int the crwd f strangers in their mind, aviding any negative r lasting
impressin. Other times, it can be disappinting—imagine striking up a cnversatin with smene interesting nly
t part ways befre exchanging cntact infrmatin.
T avid being frgtten, yu need t d smething memrable, but nt smething flish. Make an
impressin by asking an insightful questin r smething making smene laugh. This means taking risks and
aviding bland small talk; if that’s all yu ffer, yu’ll likely be pushed t the back f their memry, unlikely t be
remembered again.
But what if yu messed up yur first impressin? And ne day yu see them lking at yu, recalling the time
yu embarrassed yurself, and they’re walking tward yu thinking, “I knw yu frm smewhere…”
In that case, yur secnd impressin needs t be better. In my 19 years f making first impressins, sme nt
s great, I’ve fund that peple will give yu a secnd chance if yu give them smething t care abut. Just
because yu messed up the first time desn’t mean yu shuld withdraw and stp being interesting. If anything,
yu shuld try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questins, smile ften, tell a jke, and share what yu care abut.
Nne f this is a guaranteed “Hw t Make Peple Like Yu” guide, by the way. I’m nt even sure if any f
this wrks. But peple seem t like talking t me, s maybe sme f it des wrk.
Anyway, if this is yur first impressin f me, I hpe it’s been a gd ne.
32. What des the first sentence in paragraph 2 suggest?
A.First impressins are casual and fun. B.First impressins are brief and temprary.
C.First impressins are imprtant and steady. D.First impressins are fficial and steretyped.
33. Hw can yu make a memrable first impressin, accrding t the authr?
A. By engaging in small talk. B. By aviding risky behavir.
C. By demnstrating insight r humr. D. By sharing yur persnal experiences.
34. What des the authr recmmend ding if yu mess up yur first impressin?
A. Aplgizing immediately. B. Frgetting abut the encunter.
C. Aviding seeing the persn again. D. Making a better secnd impressin.
35. What tne des the authr take when discussing the effectiveness f their advice?
A.Playful. B.Suspenseful. C.Cnvincing. D.Critical.
