“I hnestly struggle t remember smething, but I was talking t Celesta recently and I think it was smething t d with an American schl’s scheme,” Geff said,” They matched us up with Americans fr a pen pal relatinship, and smehw I ended up with this letter frm an American girl, and we’ve just kept crrespnding (通信) ever since.”
Geff and Celesta’s relatinship never turned rmantic, but they shared a lt ver the decades. They kept up their crrespndence thrugh Wrld War II, sending updates abut their families, friends, and wrk. In 2002, they finally gt a chance t meet in persn during a trip t New Yrk City. Tw years later, they met up again, but ever since then they’ve gne back t pen and paper.
Recently, they’ve switched t digital frms f cmmunicatin t stay in tuch. Their children have helped them set up email accunts. “I’ve knwn this new thing called Zm, I think, nw t chat with her, but I leave all the technlgy t yunger peple. Deep dwn, I refuse t use Zm. Writing t Celesta has been a surce f great satisfactin fr me ver the years,” said Geff.

Last winter I enjyed a brief adventure in Guatemala. Over a perid f 12 days, I explred thrugh the jungle t watch the sunrise and danced in the street during the hliday parade. But lking back n that trip, what I remember mst vividly is a New Year’s Eve in Guatemala City, at a lifeless htel. Rather than a cuntdwn t midnight, I cunted dwn the hurs until my departure.
Nthing special happened during that night. Rather, the big rle this htel plays in my memries can be explained by a psychlgical principle called the recency effect. “The recency effect helps t accunt fr ur tendency t remember the ending part f a sequence f events with far mre clarity than the rest, ” said Dr. Mary Pffenrth, a bipsychlgist.
She says it arises frm ur shrt-term memry’s inability t hld n t mre than a small amunt f infrmatin at nce. S while there is n magic frmula t create lvely travel memries, emplying the recency effect can turn a gd trip int an unfrgettable ne.
Dr. Stephanie, a Neurscientist, says that while yu can strategically set ff the recency effect at a trip’s end, yu may have multiple pprtunities t create lasting memries all alng the way by breaking it up int smaller chunks.
Keep in mind that the recency effect can als backfire. “Ending an amazing trip with stressful flight delays, lst luggage r feeling unwell might be enugh t vershadw the entire experience, resulting in remembering the trip as awful instead f jyful, ” Stephanie said.
T avid disprprtinately (不成比例地)sptlighting the final days, Pffenrth has created a trick: She amplifies (增强) earlier days in a trip t keep her memries well-runded. “I cllect little bits that will remind me f that day: a subway ticket, a seashell, a cardbard drink with a pub’ s lg n it. ” Then, as she is packing n the last day, “I g thrugh all my little fund treasures and spend a few mments recalling each ne, ” she said. “This gives me a sense f clsure fr that chapter f travel and makes the experience memrable. ”
8. Hw did the authr feel abut the New Year’s Eve in Guatemala City?

C. It was relaxing.D. It was cheerful.
9. What d we knw abut the recency effect frm paragraph 2?

10. What des the underlined wrd “backfire” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Be avided t sme extent.B. Be applied extensively.
C. Prduce undesirable cnsequences.D. Pse unexpected challenges.
11. Accrding t Pffenrth, which f the fllwing may help travelers have gd memries?
A. Share travel experiences.B. Recall the final days f a jurney.
C. Purchase as many suvenirs as pssible.D. Purpsely gather reminders f a jurney.

In March, 2023, a grup f cmputer scientists published an assessment f a new chatbt with artificial intelligence (AI). The team’s reprt drew glbal attentin t ne test in particular: We have a bk, nine eggs, a laptp, a bttle and a nail, and please tell me hw t pile them nt each ther in a stable manner. This is a tugh puzzle. Earlier versins f the chatbt gave silly and unreasnable answers. But the new chatbt’s unique answer helped set ff the current glbal wave f AI advcacy and anxiety. It fueled debate abut hw large language mdels (LLMs) were able t perfrm creative tasks.
By 2022, LLMs were being trained n as many as 17 trillin wrds f human-generated text, mainly frm the Internet. It was certain that the new chatbt was expsed t functinal fixedness (功能固着) prblems in its training. The researchers were f curse aware f that and invented the “eggs and laptp” puzzle t prevent the new chatbt frm dishnestly cpying an answer frm the Internet. LLMs used language statistics nly. N ne had said hw t pile these nine eggs n tp f each ther ever befre. The extreme rarity f thse wrds wuld tend t prevent LLMs frm talking abut piling eggs in unrealistic ways. One f the researchers that tested the new chatbt thinks it’s likely that an LLM trained n trillins f wrds creates a wrld mdel, and this is what gives it the “magical” extraplatin (外推) prperties.
Are LLMs truly riginal r are they just plagiarists (剽窃者)? The tw statements may nt be as different as they seem. There’s nthing entirely new under the sun. Edisn did nt invent the light bulb but imprved it. Mst s-called creatrs apply knwledge frm different fields t a prblem and arrive at a slutin. It’s mre a matter f making relevant cnnectins than f inventing smething cmpletely new. If LLMs are indeed acquiring the ability t make relevant cnnectins, that wuld be a histric but discmfrting develpment.
12. What d we knw abut the new chatbt’s answer t the puzzle in paragraph 1?
A. It was silly.B. It set peple thinking.
C. It drew little attentin.D. It highlighted language innvatin.
13. Why did the researchers invent the “eggs and laptp” puzzle?
A. T cpy nline answers.B. T stp the chatbt cheating.
C. T train humans t use language.D. T expse the chatbt t functinal prblems.
14. What des the authr cnvey in the last paragraph?
A. Hw an inventin came int being.B. Hw Edisn became successful in histry.
C. Why Edisn invented smething entirely new.D. Why an inventin required effrt and pprtunity.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Will Rbts Replace Humans?B. Can Rbts Develp Smthly?
C. Can AI Cme Up With Anything Original?D. Will AI Slve Magical And Difficult Prblems?

A. It was bring.B. It was eventful.
C. It was relaxing.D. It was cheerful.
9. What d we knw abut the recency effect frm paragraph 2?

B. It is widely used t create lvely memries.
C. It highlights the final part f a series f events.

10. What des the underlined wrd “backfire” mean in paragraph 4?

C. Prduce undesirable cnsequences.D. Pse unexpected challenges.
11. Accrding t Pffenrth, which f the fllwing may help travelers have gd memries?
A. Share travel experiences.B. Recall the final days f a jurney.
C. Purchase as many suvenirs as pssible.D. Purpsely gather reminders f a jurney.

根据第一段中“But lking back n that trip, what I remember mst vividly is a New Year's Eve in Guatemala City, at a lifeless htel. Rather than a cuntdwn t midnight, I cunted dwn the hurs until my departure.( 但回想起那次旅行,我印象最深刻的是在危地马拉城的一个新年前夜,在一家毫无生气的酒店里。我没有倒数午夜,而是倒数出发前的几个小时。)” 可知,作者对危地马拉城的那个新年夜感到无聊,因为他在倒数离开的时间而不是新年的到来。故选A。
根据第二段中“The recency effect helps t accunt fr ur tendency t remember the ending part f a sequence f events with far mre clarity than the rest,(近因效应有助于解释为什么我们倾向于比其他部分更清楚地记住一系列事件的结束部分,)”,这句话说明近因效应强调了事件序列结尾部分的记忆清晰度高于其他部分。C选项“It highlights the final part f a series f events.(它突出了一系列事件的最后一部分。)”
根据第五段中划线词后面的内容“Ending an amazing trip with stressful flight delays, lst luggage r feeling unwell might be enugh t vershadw the entire experience, resulting in remembering the trip as awful instead f jyful(以紧张的航班延误、行李丢失或感觉不适来结束一次美妙的旅行,可能足以给整个经历蒙上阴影,导致你对旅行的记忆是糟糕的,而不是快乐的。)”
根据最后一段中“Then, as she is packing n the last day, “I g thrugh all my little fund treasures and spend a few mments recalling each ne, ” she said. “This gives me a sense f clsure fr that chapter f travel and makes the experience memrable.

A. Hw an inventin came int being.B. Hw Edisn became successful in histry.
C. Why Edisn invented smething entirely new.D. Why an inventin required effrt and pprtunity.

根据最后一段“There’s nthing entirely new under the sun. Edisn did nt invent the light bulb but imprved it. Mst s-called creatrs apply knwledge frm different fields t a prblem and arrive at a slutin. 【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Are LLMs truly riginal r are they just plagiarists (剽窃者)? The tw statements may nt be as different as they seem.( LLMs是真正的原创者还是只是剽窃者?这两种说法可能并不像看上去那么不同)”结合文章主要说明了一群计算机科学家通过一个“鸡蛋和笔记本”的问题,来测试新聊天机器人是否可以进行创作。可知,C选项“人工智能能创造出原创的东西吗?”最符合文章标题。故选C。
