      Artificial lights— essential fr plant grwth— accunted fr ver half the energy csts in grwing a crp f red lettuce, which is much higher than ther farms. The ventilatin(通风) and irrigatin(灌溉) systems als use a lt f energy, cnsuming 18% and 9% f the ttal pwer csts.
      Lead authr Dr. Gianluca Brunetti says the findings highlight pprtunities t imprve the technlgy used in dmestic indr vertical gardens t vercme energy inefficiencies.
      “Indr vertical farming has significant ptential t cntribute t urban agriculture by grwing crps year-rund in small spaces,” Dr. Brunetti says. “Hwever, energy cnsumptin, particularly frm artificial lighting and ventilatin systems, must be carefully managed t ensure these systems are nt nly viable but als sustainable in the lng term.”
      The researchers say that while indr vertical gardens are still in the early stages, they anticipate the market will grw greatly ver the next decade, in line with a mve twards mre sustainable cities.
      Vertical farming is seen as a ptentially resurce-efficient technlgy that can save water, nutrients, labr and space. It culd als prduce crps ut f seasn and prtect them frm pests. Like any rapid innvatin, it des cme with prblems which manufacturers keep secret, while verstating the benefits, the researchers say.
