The plane had arrived 25 minutes late, and peple walked in line t get their seats. The cnductr wanted t knw if there were peple traveling tgether, s I went t the frnt f the line with the girl and we were arranged t sit next t each ther. Priscilla Ouchida’s “energy efficient” huse turned ut t be a hrrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ag, they built a $100,000 three-bedrm hme in Califrnia. Tightly sealed t prevent air leaks, the huse was equipped with small duble-paned windws and several ther energy-saving features. Prblems began as sn as the cuple mved in, hwever. Priscilla’s eyes burned. Her thrat was cnstantly dry. She suffered frm headaches and culd hardly sleep. It was as thugh she had suddenly develped a strange illness.
Experts finally traced the cause f her illness. The level f frmaldehyde gas in her kitchen was twice the maximum allwed by federal standards fr chemical wrkers. The surce f the gas? Her new kitchen cabinets and wall-t-wall carpeting.
The Ouchidas are victims f indr air pllutin, which is nt given sufficient attentin partly because f the natin’s drive t save energy. The prblem itself isn’t new. “The indr envirnment was dirty lng befre energy cnservatin came alng,” says Mschandreas, a pllutin scientist at Gemet Technlgies in Maryland. “Energy cnservatin has tended t accentuate the situatin in sme cases.”
The prblem appears t be mre trublesme in newly cnstructed hmes rather than ld nes. Back in the days when energy was cheap, hme builders didn’t wrry much abut unsealed cracks. Because f such leaks, the air in an average hme was replaced by fresh utdr air abut nce an hur. As a result, the pllutants generated in mst husehlds seldm built up t dangerus levels.

2. What made the Ouchidas’ new huse a hrrible dream?
3. The wrd “accentuate” (Para. 3) mst prbably means “________”.

The guy’s bdy slid briefly alng the third rail, cming t rest n the gravel n the uter edge f the tracks.
The man was breathing, but irregularly. Smething wasn’t right. “Give him chest cmpressins (按压)!” yelled a wman. Perry was n expert, but fr a few mments he wrked n the man’s heart until the victim began cnvulsing. Then he heard a sudden nise behind him — medical wrkers and firefighters had arrived. Perry let the prfessinals take ver. His heart still racing frm the electric shcks, he climbed back up nt the platfrm, grabbed his things and headed hme.

When I was a little girl, my mm wuld say, “Half the fun f ding anything is sharing it with thers.” 1 Friends and mates allw us t enjy ur successes and ur jys, cmfrt us in ur hard mments, and prvide a mirrr fr us t learn mre abut urselves. I’ve always lked at friends as the family we chse. They enrich ur lives. As Rbert Luis Steven nce said, “ 2 ”.
T be a gd friend r partner, it’s imprtant t be a gd listener. Hear what yur friend r mate has t say first rather than jump t cnclusins r get defensive. 3 When they hear their wrds repeated back t them, it can help them t realize what they said was nt exactly what they meant t say.
4 Yu knw the ld glden rule, “Care fr thers the way yu wuld like them t care fr yu.” The supprt f a friend during a tugh time culd make the difference between success and failure. Encuragement and cnfidence are the gifts that can help change a persn’s life.
Take care, thugh, with whm yu chse t have clse relatinship, fr they can have a great effect n yurself – respect and life path. As smene nce tld me “ 5 They will either take yu up r dwn.”
