When I bught a huse in Prtland fur years ag, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending t remve the weeds and plant sme vegetables r lng-lasting flwers. I sn discvered, hwever, that the sil was unprductive, clay-heavy and littered with stnes. In previus, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags f high-quality sil frm the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity f dirt was neither practical nr financially pssible. Instead, I decided t remediate(补救) what I already had.
The challenge befre me was t revitalize the sil. Tw cre principles f mdern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing sil disturbance and emphasizing bidiversity. In practice, grwing crps by turns; priritizing rganic inputs ver chemical fertilizers; integrating crps, trees and livestck; and shielding sil frm being washed away with cver crps, ften wrk.
I tried t apply such methds in my garden. Where nce there was nly grass, I created a pnd, a rck garden, a wildflwer field and raised beds fr vegetables. I let plants grw and decmpse by themselves in a natural way. I als intrduced different plants and revived its eclgical cmmunities.
In May, I decided t relcate a flwering plant. As I dug the plant ut, all manner f life emerged. Earthwrms swung frm the rts. A daddy lnglegs hurried fr shelter. Belw the plant I even nticed the fine white lattice f a fungal mycelium.
Running my fingers thrugh the sil, I understd, mre clearly than ever befre, that I transfrmed much mre than my yard — it cmpletely changed the way I think abut sil. It’s nt simply as a medium fr life, but as a living entity(个体) in its wn right. Althugh science still lacks an agreed definitin f life, textbks highlight criteria widely cnsidered t differentiate the living and nnliving. Sil meets many f them: It has a highly rganized structure. It has a capacity fr active self-preservatin. It grws. It breathes. And it can die.
      24. Hw did the authr use t imprve the sil?
      A. By adding rich sil.B. By cvering it with bags.
      C. By remving the weeds.D. By applying chemical fertilizer.
      25. What des the underlined wrd “shielding” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?

      B. T illustrate the preventin f insect attacks.
      C. T stress the cmpetitin f different species.
      D. T state the frmatin f multi-species cmmunities.
      27. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. The Sul f SilB. The Vitality f the Wild
      C. The Art f GardeningD. The Whisper f Flwers

Selling a British institutin t a freign billinaire is a big deal. In the case f Ryal Mail, that deal is nt yet dne, but the cmpany’s bard has agreed t the mve in principle. The 508-year-ld pstal service, Ryal Mail, has been valued at 5 billin by its ptential Czech buyer, Daniel Kretinsky, and sharehlders f Ryal Mail’s parent cmpany are due t vte n the deal in September 2024.
The gvernment has since made a prmise t “firmly scrutinize” the takever and give wrkers a “strnger vice”, leading sme investrs t dubt whether the deal will nw g thrugh.
But there are gd reasns fr viewing this kind f freign direct investment as valuable t the struggling UK ecnmy. There is research which shws that freign-wned firms are typically mre prductive, mre innvative and pay higher wages than their dmestically-wned cmpetitrs.
There are ther pssible advantages t. Research als suggests that attracting freign investment can help reginal develpment in the UK, making a significant cntributin t what has becme knwn as “levelling up”.
But it desn’t always wrk ut that way. One majr cncern is that when business strategy decisins are made remtely, they tend t emphasize shrt-term gains ver lng-term sustainability. And apart frm the issue ver whether the UK’s natinal pst carrier shuld be in private hands at all, there remain questins abut what specific benefits freign prperty wuld bring t Ryal Mail.
A takever f this type ften leads t “restructuring”. Daniel Kretinsky has prmised n changes t wrking cnditins fr tw years, and t keep the Ryal Mail’s tax residency(纳税身份) in UK fr five years.
A successful takever als depends n the ability f the cmpany t generate prductivity grwth, usually thrugh things like investment f capital r new technlgy. But it is nt clear that either f them is likely in this case.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “scrutinize” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A. Examine.B. Detect.C. Overlk.D. Display.
      29. Why is external direct investment precius t the UK’s hard ecnmy?
      A. Freign-wned firms are mre efficient and creative.
      B. Freign-wned firms can bst glbal cmpetitiveness.
      C. Freign-wned firms prvide mre reginal jbs than the lcal firms.
      D. Freign-wned firms bring advanced technlgies and practices t the UK.
      30. Which ne is the current cncern abut Ryal Mail?
      A. Jb cuts and wage changes.B. Ownership f the natinal pst ffice.
      C. Unpredictable internatinal expansin.D. A decrease in service quality fr custmers.
      31. What can be inferred frm paragraph 6?
      A. Ryal Mail will nt pay taxes within five years.
      B. Ryal Mail will relcate its headquarters abrad.
      C. Ryal Mail’s tax status culd be reassessed in five years.
      D. There will be n freign influence n Ryal Mail’s peratins.

Scientists have lng linked the Permian-Triassic mass extinctin sme 252 millin years ag t vast vlcanic eruptins in what is nw Siberia. The resulting CO2 emissins rapidly accelerated climate warming, resulting in the cllapse f ecsystems. But climate warming alne cannt explain because when the trpics becme t ht, species migrate t the cler, higher latitudes(纬度). S, what wiped ut almst all life n land, including plants and usually resilient insects, has remained a surce f mystery.
One new study, published in the jurnal Science and c-led by the University f Bristl and China University f Gesciences (Wuhan), has shed new light. Tremendus cean warming El Nir events were the key, with glbal cnditins swinging wildly ver decades.
The scale f Permian-Triassic warming was revealed by studying xygen istpes(同位素) in the fssilized(石化的) tth material f tiny extinct swimming rganisms called cndnts(牙形虫). By studying the temperature recrd f cndnts frm arund the wrld, the researchers were able t shw remarkable temperature instability, especially in the lw and mid latitudes.
Dr. Farnswrth, wh used pineering climate mdeling t evaluate the findings, said, “The changes respnsible fr the climate patterns were prfund because there were much mre intense and prlnged El Nin events than witnessed tday. Species were simply nt equipped t adapt r evlve quickly enugh.”
The results f the climate mdeling als help explain the abundant charcal(木炭) fund in rck layers f that age. “Wildfires became very cmmn in a drught-prne climate. Earth gt stuck in a crisis state where the land was burning and the ceans lifeless. There was nwhere t hide,” he added.
In recent years El Nir events have caused majr changes. 2023-2024 was ne f the httest years n recrd glbally due t a strng El Nin in the Pacific, which was further wrsened by increased human-induced CO2 driving catastrphic drught and fires arund the wrld. Frtunately, events like this s far have nly lasted ne t tw years at a time.
      32. What des the article mainly talk abut?
      A. The exact cause f the Permian-Triassic mass extinctin.
      B. The impacts f vlcanic eruptins n species n the earth.
      C. The cnnectin between El Nin events and CO2 emissins.
      D. The survival skills f sme ancient plants and resilient insects.
      33. Hw did researchers knw abut the instable glbal temperature in the Permian-Triassic perid?
      A. By making reference t previus climate mdels.
      B. By cmparing temperatures in lw and mid latitudes.
      C. By studying different sea creatures arund the wrld.
      D. By cnducting scientific researches n relevant fssils.
      34. What happened sme 252 millin years ag accrding t the researchers?
      ①Threatened species made instant evlutins.
②Massive amunts f charcal were frmed.
      ③Disastrus wildfires happened frequently.
④The earth almst turned int a burning planet.
      A. ①②B. ③④C. ①②③D. ②③④
      35. What is implied in the last paragraph?
      A. Histry always repeats itself.B. The clud has a silver lining.
      C. Every day is a leaf in histry.D. Nature is indeed what we see.

Once cnsidered an ptinal lifestyle chice, recycling has becme a cmmnplace activity in mst areas. One type f recycling, called dwncycling, invlves re-purpsing a material int a new prduct f lesser quality. 36 .
Dwncycling is mst cmmn in terms f industrial materials. These prducts lse their value as they are recycled, which limits their capacity fr new use. 37 White writing paper, fr example, is ften dwncycled int cardbard; nce dwncycled t this new frm, it can n lnger be used as white paper again. Anther example f dwncycling includes the use f plastic cmpnents.
38 Plastic, glass, and aluminium prducts cded with the number ne may be remade int smething f equal r greater value. This type f recycling is knwn as upcycling, and represents the frward cmpatibility f recycled cmpnents. Materials available fr dwncycling, such as water, juice, and milk bttles, are cded with the number tw. They may nt be used t cntain fd-grade items again upn being dwncycled.
Items available fr dwncycling ften require additinal chemicals, energy and ther treatments in rder t transfrm them int smething usable. 39 Trash bins, tables, and chairs are als cnsidered materials with a high energy cst t recycle.
40 This usually ccurs when a substance is blended with ther substances, such as different types f plastic with varius recycling cdes. Since these prducts can n lnger be made int new nes, they will either have t be reused r discarded, typically in a landfill.
