But the Fusses weren’t the nly flks in Alt and the neighbring twn f Lwell t receive an unexpected legacy frm the Hatches. Dzens f ther families were tuched by the Hatches’ genersity. In sme cases, it was a few thusand dllars; in thers, it was mre than $100,000.
It surprised nearly everyne that the Hatches had s much mney, mre than $3 millin-they were an elderly cuple wh lived in an ld huse n what was left f the family farm.
Children f the Great Depressin, Ish and Arlene were knwn fr their habit f saving. They liked cmparisn shpping and wuld rutinely g frm stre t stre, checking prices befre making a new purchase.
Thrugh the years, the Hatches paid fr lcal children t attend summer camp when their parents culdn’t affrd it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if yu needed anything,” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They culd see things they culd d t make yu happier, and they wuld d them.”
Even mre extrardinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy, a legacy f kindness as much as ne f dllars and cents, wuld enrich the whle cmmunity and last fr generatins t cme.

Every year thusands f peple cme t the city f Pamplna, in nrth-eastern Spain, fr the pprtunity t run fr their lives as six fighting bulls are released t charge thrugh the twn. There are injuries and deaths every year, but the event is f interest t many peple. A paper just published in Science describes the insight the event ffers int the psychlgy f panicked crwds.
That is a useful tpic t explre. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners must try t wrk ut hw peple will behave in the event f a disaster like a fire, a fld r a terrrist attack s they can design their creatins t avid ptentially deadly cllisins (碰撞). Unfrtunately, slid infrmatin is hard t btain. Daniel Parisi, the paper’s lead authr, realized that the Pamplna bull-runs ffered the perfect natural experiment.
Dr. Parisi and his team went t tw different rftp lcatins in Pamplna in July 2023, and filmed the runners as the animals were released. Later in the lab, they calculated the speed f the runners, the density (密度) f
the crwd, the prbability f a runner tripping and falling and the relatinship between runner-grup density and speed.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the researchers fund that runners picked up speed when the bulls drew near. Less expected was the finding that the speed f individual runners increased with the density f the crwd, which was cntrary t a lng-held assumptin in architectural and urban-design circles that peple will slw their pace as grup density ges up, in rder t lwer the risk f a cllisin, which culd lead t a fall and, perhaps, injury r death.
Yet it seems that, in the heat f the mment, peple pay little attentin t the danger f clliding with each ther, and d nt slw dwn. The respnsibility therefre falls upn urban designers t wrk ut hw best t plan the cnstructin f future tunnels, bridges and ther passages that restrict the flw. The nly ptin may well be t make them wider.
8. What des the paper cncentrate n?
A. Hw six fighting bulls appeal t s many peple.
B Hw bull-runs cause injuries and deaths every year.
C. Hw six fighting bulls are released t charge thrugh the twn
D. Hw bull-runs affect frightened peple’s minds and behaviurs.

C. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners ften cnsider such disasters.
D. Architects, civil engineers and urban planners smetimes ignre such disasters.
10. What is the lng-held assumptin when there is a dangerus situatin?
A. Peple may lse their minds in disasters.
B. Peple will slw dwn in crwded areas.
C. Peple tend t speed up in high-density crwds.
D. Peple in panicked crwds can be unaware f the cllisin.
11. Hw did Dr. Parisi and his team carry ut their research?
A. By bserving the event and analyzing the infrmatin.
B. By using the methd f reasning and judging.
C. By cnsulting the rganizers f the bull-runs.
D. By ding experiments with sme vlunteers.
