A few years ag, we bught a Leg Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) fr my dad’s birthday, hping t cmbine his lve fr architecture with family time.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered arund the large dining table t build the mdel. We faced thusands f tiny white pieces, each packaged with precisin in numbered plastic bags, accmpanied by a thick instructin bk. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rse befre ur eyes. We culd see ur effrts prducing gd results, and as we turned t the bring task f rdering the clred bricks n the building’s flr, ur cnversatin t tk a turn.
We were amazed by hw cmplex the mdel was and its instructin bk. We realized the bk itself was a wrk f art, beautiful, but als surprisingly detailed and clear. It prvided us with the cmfrt f certainty. We knew if we fllwed all the instructins, we wuld end up with a mdel that lked exactly like the picture n the bx. If we made a mistake, all we had t d was t repeat ur steps and start again.
Life, hwever, des nt fit tgether s neatly and rarely prvides us with such clear instructins. We talked ver ur respective lives, decisins made, and actins and chices never taken. Dad reflected n a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, n the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the expert architects ding the assembling (组装), but ut in the wrld, we were the nes being assembled. We think we’re in cntrl, but ur chices are shaped by frces beynd ur cntrl. In the face f uncertainty, we have t prceed, trusting bth in the prcess and the end result.
Smetimes, n the days I return hme, I g t the spare rm t lk at the cmpleted Leg mdel, which brings frth a sense f happiness and cmfrt. It reminds me that life is built slwly, with mistakes, an element f uncertainty and n instructin bk. It shws that cnsideratin, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Life itself is nt abut what we materially create r leave behind, but rather hw we lived it.

Artificial intelligence (AI) might be the biggest winner f the Nbel Prize in 2024. US scientist Jhn Hpfield and British-Canadian Geffrey Hintn wn the 2024 Nbel Prize in physics fr discveries and inventins in machine learning that paved the way fr the AI rapid grwth, accrding t Reuters.
In 1982, Hpfield created a netwrk that helps cmputers stre and recall patterns, similar t hw ur brains remember things. A year later, Hintn develped the Bltzmann machine, which allws cmputers t learn independently t regnize patterns in data, such as identifying specific bjects in images.
As fr the Nbel Prize in chemistry, US scientists David Baker and Jhn Jumper, alng with British cmputer scientist Demis Hassabis, wn the prize. Half the prize was awarded t Baker “fr cmputatinal prtein design” while the ther half was shared by Jumper and Hassabis fr their develpment f the AI mdel AlphaFld2.
Scientists struggled fr decades t predict hw prteins fld int their 3D shapes that determine their functin. Hwever, AlphaFld2, develped by AI research labratry DeepMind, can accurately predict the 3D structures f nearly all knwn prteins, shwing great ptential in the field f drug develpment.
“AI can be a pwerful tl fr slving prblems that invlve btaining utputs frm inputs, shwing its great ptential in scientific research,” Prfessr Yang Majun frm Tsinghua University tld Science and Technlgy Daily.
In his view, AI applicatins are nt limited t fields like bilgy, chemistry r physics. Their range mainly depends n hw well prblems frm the real wrld can be abstracted int a frm that AI can learn and prcess, and whether there is sufficient real-wrld data t train and build deep learning netwrks.
AI's imprtance in scientific research is increasingly evident. Yang believes that scientists shuld actively accept this trend while remaining aware f AI's limitatins. Hintn expressed a similar cncern at the Nbel press cnference. “We als have t wrry abut a number f pssible bad cnsequences, particularly the threat f these things getting ut f cntrl, ” he said.
“Humans carry the respnsibility fr using this new technlgy in a safe and ethical (合乎道德的) way, fr the greatest benefit f humankind,” said Ellen Mns, chair f the Nbel Cmmittee fr Physics.
28. What was Jhn Hpfield’s cntributin t the 2024 Nbel Prize in physics?
A. Inventing a new learning machine. B. Designing a new type f data prcessr.
C. Creating an AI mdel fr image analysis.D. Develping a netwrk fr pattern strage.
29. Why is AlphaFld2 imprtant in the field f drug develpment?
A. It can frecast prtein flding patterns. B. It can prduce new prteins fr drug use.
C. It can identify prteins related t diseases.D. It can analyze the genetic rders f prteins.
30. What may determine the ptential f AI applicatins accrding t Yang Majun?
A. The accuracy f AI training data. B. The effectiveness f machine learning.
C. The availability f enugh real-wrld data.D. The level f real-wrld prblem settlement.
31. What can be the best title f the passage?
A. AI als has its weak pints. B. AI shuld benefit humankind.
C. AI steals the shw at the Nbel Prize.D. AI may run ut f cntrl in the future.

Meanwhile, ppular destinatins culd adapt by prmting mre affrdable chices t turists, striking a balance between lcals’ and visitrs’ needs and prmting sustainable turism.
32. What des the underlined wrd “verwhelming” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Enrmus.B. Pwerful.C. Frightening.D. Cnfusing.

C. T deal with prblems caused by verturism.
D. T reduce unfair cmpetitin in the turism industry.
34. What was Fabea Wiegand’s attitude tward raising the turist tax?
A. Objective.B. Disapprving.C. Sympathetic.D. Indifferent.
35. What des The Ecnmist think abut the turist tax?
A. It may negatively affect lcal services.
B. It will be harmful t sustainable turism.
C. It will reduce the inflw f freign visitrs.
D. It may be beneficial t less ppular destinatins.
