Each fall, after mnarch butterflies migrate frm suthern Canada t the muntains f central Mexic, they spend the winter exclusively n yamel fir trees. But climate change prjectins predict that yamel fir trees will disappear almst entirely by 2090.
“This sunds crazy, but we need t mve the trees t higher elevatins (海拔),” said Cuauhtémc Sáenz-Rmer, a frest geneticist. “Oyamel fir trees, which grw frm arund 2,400 meters t 3,500 meters, need cld muntain air t survive. The high-elevatin cldness als allws mnarch butterflies t survive the winter. As central Mexic gets warmer, new generatins f yamel fir trees will likely climb higher up their native muntains and ultimately run ut f muntains t climb.”
Sáenz-Rmer wanted t d the experiment 100 kilmeters frm their native habitat, but he was aware that the trees wuldn’t get there by themselves. “Unfrtunately, the scene in The Lrd f the Rings, where the trees are walking tward battle — it’s just fictin. It desn’t happen,” he said.
His team cllected yamel fir seeds frm elevatins between 3,100 meters and 3,500 meters inside the Mnarch Butterfly Bisphere Reserve in Michacán state and grew them temprarily in a tree nursery. Then, in partnership with the lcal cmmunity in Calimaya, the team planted arund 960 trees in the cmmunity’s frest n the Nevad de Tluca vlcan. Sme seedlings (幼苗) were planted at 3,400 meters while thers were planted higher, in clder climates, at 3,600,3,800 and 4,000 meters abve sea level. “If the fir culd take rt at higher-than-nrmal elevatins, the trees might survive there in the future as temperatures warm,” Sáenz-Rmer hped.
Three years later, the team fund that yamel fi r trees were smaller and shrter the higher they sat n Nevad de Tluca. Still, many made it past their first year. On average, 80 percent f seedlings that gt mved t lcatins 2.3℃ clder than their hme regins survived at least three years.

On the crwded supermarket shelves, fd prducts with carefully designed packaging and labels draw attentin. Sme 72% f American cnsumers say that prduct packaging influences their purchase decisins — a statistic nt lst n fd manufacturers(生产商).
Luis Bisctti, the Natinal Leader fr Fd & Beverage Services Grup at Marcum, writes in Frbes that when the FDA updated its nutritin facts label fr packaged fds in 2020, fd cmpanies fund they culd use thse labels n their packaging t prvide nutritinal and ther data t bst sales.
He adds that 30% f U. S. cnsumers surveyed are mre likely t buy prducts with sustainable credentials(认证)and that “clean label” characteristics can win ver cnsumers. Labeling can be very helpful when determining certain things abut a fd item. “USDA Organic”, “free f preservatives” and “raised withut antibitics”, fr example, have specific standards, and the prduct will need t be true t thse claims.
Hwever, a new reprt takes a lk at the “natural” claims n fd packaging and the result is eye-pening. “Fd suppliers use the label that claims the fd is ‘natural’ at a relatively lw cst because regulatry agencies treat the claim as meaning nthing artificial was added and the prduct was minimally prcessed,” the authrs explain. “Natural” claims like “all natural”, “100% natural” and “made with natural ingredients” are nt defined in regulatins. “Neither the FDA’s nr USDA’s plicy decisins address the health benefits r crp prductin methds cnsumers might assign t natural-labeled fds,” write the authrs. But the mre serius prblem is hw this harms fd prducers wh are actually meeting the standards fr stricter labels that are actually ding gd, like nes arund rganic practices r animal welfare. Farmers and prducers ding the wrk end up at a cmpetitive disadvantage in the marketplace if cnsumers treat fds labeled “natural” as alike.
12.Hw d fd cmpanies try t attract cnsumers accrding t the text?
A.By increasing fd nutritin.B.By cutting the number f labels.
C.By taking advantage f packaging.D.By selling fd prducts at a discunt.
13.What d the underlined wrds “the prduct” in paragraph 3 refer t?
A.A preservative claimed t be harmless.B.A “clean” label with specific standards.
C.A kind f unppular but healthy fd.D.A fd item with claims n the label.
14.What des the new reprt find abut the “natural” claims n fd packaging?
A.They are unrelated t fd prcessing.B.They reveal the gd effects f fd.
C.They dn’t guarantee health benefits.D.They invlve crp prductin methds.
15.What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A.Fd manufacturers’ nvel sales strategies.B.The impact f cnsumers’ miscnceptins.

Occupied by challenging curses and a packed schedule f after-schl activities, a high schl student was stretched t her limit. Her well-meaning parents ften encuraged her with the phrase “Just d yur best”. Hwever, it felt like a burden she culdn’t carry.

As I wrte in my bk, 10 Days t a Less Defiant Child, encuraging effrt desn’t mean we have t hld kids t an impssible standard. Instead, we can fcus n fstering a slid wrk ethic(道德)while leaving rm fr grwth. Here are tw essential guidelines:
·Set realistic expectatins: Smetimes, “gd enugh” is just fine. 18 . Fr example, if yur high-schlers are stressed abut perfecting every assignment, help them understand that nt every task requires equal effrt.
· 19 : Instead f saying “Yu’re s smart!”, try “I nticed hw much effrt yu put int slving that prblem. That kind f determinatin will help yu in s many ways.” This shifts the fcus frm fixed traits(特质)t grwth and effrt.
Telling children t “always d yur best” can unintentinally link their sense f wrth t achievement. Instead, by teaching them when t push and when t pause, we prepare them fr a balanced and fulfilling life. 20 . It can be as simple as helping kids navigate (掌控) their capacity, shwing them the value f effrt, and reminding them that their perfrmance — whatever it lks like at the mment — is always enugh.
A.Separate effrt frm praise
B.This situatin is far frm unique
C.Praise the prcess rather than the utcme
