Ever since my daughter Gabi was just a yung child, she has been curius abut the wrld arund her, always
ready t ask “why” and “hw” questins. I thught it culd be fun t talk t my daughter abut female scientists. I

used t finish many tasks humans d. I tld Gabi abut Lvelace's cntributins t the field and the impact she had
n me as a scientist and mathematician.
Tday, cmputers are such an essential part f ur daily lives; we can’t imagine living withut them. The idea
that cmputers can g beynd just calculating numbers and perfrm any abstract peratin is the phenmenn f
ur technlgy. Hwever, nt everyne knws that this idea dates back t lng befre the first prgrammable,
general-purpse digital cmputer was intrduced in the 1940s. This cncept ges back t the 1800s, thanks t
Lveluce, a pineer in mathematics and cmputing, wh was recgnized as the first cmputer prgrammer.
Lvelace als held her belief that while cmputers had endless ptential, they culd nt be truly intelligent.
She argued that AI can’t create anything riginal withut learning frm human input. This is still true tday as AI
becmes increasingly cmmn in ur everyday lives. While ChatGPT and similar AI tls may seem t have a
“mind” f their wn, thse tls are simply parrting human-generated cntent n the internet.
Lvelace was an incredibly intelligent wman, wh cntributed s much t mathematics and cmputer science.
Her enthusiasm and determinatin led her t lk further and search deeper. I hpe Lyelace will inspire my

In rural Pakistan, a new prject, called Imprving Access t Sustainable Energy in Rural Pakistan Using Fd
and Fiber Agr-Waste as a Renewable Fuel (SAFER), aims t turn banana waste int a reliable surce f electricity
      fr ff-grid (远离电网的) cmmunities.
Every year, Pakistan generates 80 millin metric tns f agricultural waste frm grwing bananas. Academics
      第 5页/共 12页
frm Nrthumbria University, in partnership with UK and Pakistani rganizatins, have develped an innvative
tw-part system that will make use f this waste prduct and prvide benefits fr lcal peple at the same time. The
first part will use new technlgy t turn the banana waste int textile fibers (纺织纤维), and the secnd part takes
the waste generated frm that prcess and uses it t prduce renewable (可再生的) energy.
This will nt nly reduce the envirnmental impact f Pakistan’s textile industry but als bring cleaner
electricity t the 50% f peple living in rural areas f the cuntry wh currently rely n fssil (化石) fuels fr
energy. The prcess has the ptential t be applied t almst any frm f agricultural waste, benefiting
cmmunities and the envirnment wrldwide thrugh the supply f renewable textiles and energy.
Dr. Jibran Khaliq, f Nrthumbria University, is a material scientist wh researches turning waste energy.
“Pakistan’s textile department is respnsible fr significant envirnmental impacts, including greenhuse gas
emissins (排放), and micrplastics,” said Dr. Khaliq in a statement.
He revealed that his partners have develped a technlgy t turn banana waste int textile fibers, but the lack
f electricity in rural Sindh, where the majrity f the bananas are grwn, has prevented this innvatin frm being
      scaled-up until nw.
“Over the next year we will be wrking t develp a new waste-t-energy technlgy. The technlgy will
benefit the textile industry and lcal cmmunities, imprving sil fertility (肥沃) and fd prductin thrugh the
generatin f bifertilizers (生物肥料),” he added.
      8. What is SAFER intended t d?
      A. T reduce textile waste. B. T prmte banana planting.
      C. T increase agricultural prductin. D. T generate electricity frm banana waste.
      9. Hw des the authr present the tw-part system in detail?
      A. By giving a definitin. B. By giving an example.
      C. By making a cmparisn. D. By making an explanatin. .
      10. What has prevented the wide applicatin f the technlgy in rural Sindh?
      A. Lack f labr frce. B. Electricity shrtage.
      C. Insufficient funding. D. High cst f the technlgy.
      11. What is a ptential benefit f the new waste-t-energy technlgy?
      A. Develping agriculture. B. Decreasing sil fertility.
      C. Increasing use f fssil fuel. D. Prmting the sale f textile.

Glaciers (冰川) are enrmus masses f ice created by snw that has becme packed ver many years. Hidden
inside sme f them are dramatic and beautiful caves called glacier caves (洞), which are made entirely f ice.
Hw d they frm? Ice caves, usually lying within r beneath glaciers, are frmed by the meltwater f the
glacier that flws thrugh the ice during perids f rainfall r during the warmer mnths when the glacier ice is
melting (融化). Where the melted water flws thrugh cracks (裂缝) in the ice, the cracks get bigger and bigger
ver time. Eventually, a glacier cave is frmed.
Glacier caves are valuable t glacilgists, scientists wh study glaciers. Usually, glacilgists can study the
surface f a glacier, but these caves let them see the underside and inside. Studying a glacier frm the inside helps
scientists learn abut the way a glacier mves and slides.
As the climate changes, glaciers are melting quickly, leading t rising sea levels. Glacier caves are changing
quickly t. Frm ne visit t the next, peple might find that sme rms in a cave have disappeared while thers
have frmed. Ice may have thickened r thinned as mre air enters thrugh places where the ice has melted thrugh.
Because f this, the vlume has t be re-mapped every few weeks. “It’s very different frm a rck cave, which
never changes,” said Cartaya, a 46-year-ld Frest Service wrker and EMT in Bend, Oregn. “Once yu survey a
rck cave, it’s dne. With these, every week it’s changing.”
Glacilgists and ther scientists measure these changes. The infrmatin can help them figure ut what is
happening with ur sea levels and ur planet. In recent years, data cllected frm the cave system has unlcked an
imprtant clue in tracking glacial lss. They hpe t prvide critical new infrmatin fr understanding the impact
f glacial lss n water resurces and glbal sea level rise.
      12. What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
      A. The effects f glacier caves. B. The changes f glacier caves.
      C. The frmatin f glacier caves. D. The definitin f glacier caves.
      13. Why des the authr mentin Cartaya’s wrds in paragraph 4?
      A. T prve a pint. B. T intrduce a tpic.
      C. T draw a cnclusin. D. T attract readers’ interest.
      14. What can we learn frm the text?
      A. Glacier caves change slwly.
      B. Glacier caves are made partly f ice.
      C. Meltwater flws thrugh the ice cracks in clder weather.
      第 7页/共 12页
      D. Glacier caves help figure ut hw glaciers mve and slide.
      15. What d scientists think f the current research?
      A Satisfying. B. Disappinting. C. Shcking. D. Cnfusing.
      第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 12. 5 分)

Culdn’t a super-busy teenage girl get sme rest frm a cntinuusly-wrking week? OK, maybe Lynn had

huse inside a small wd. And when they struggled t get t the tp tgether, they wuld have “cnquered the
wrld”. They felt they were at the tp f the wrld. What a happy memry!
She sighed again and gave up trying t rub the jelly n her shirt. Perhaps... it was time t stp having a wrld
      war with her sister.
S, Lynn changed int a new shirt, tk a deep breath and kncked n her sister’s dr.
April pened the dr hesitantly and Lynn entered the rm quickly. April lked cnfused fr a secnd
