New psychlgy research pints t the factrs that explain why we find particular pems aesthetically pleasing. “While it may seem bvius that individual taste matters in judgments f petry, we fund certain factrs cnsistently influence hw much a pem will be enjyed.”
Aesthetics (美学), the basis f what we find appealing r nt, play an imprtant rle in ur everyday lives. Hwever, little is knwn abut hw we make these judgments. The researchers sught t answer an age-ld questin — “Why d we like what we like?” — by measuring what we find aesthetically pleasing in petry.
T d this, the team had mre than 400 participants read and rate pems f tw genres — haiku and snnet — with the aim f understanding the factrs that best predicted the aesthetic appeal f the pems. After reading each pem, participants answered questins abut the pem’s vividness (“Hw vivid is the imagery evked frm this pem?”), emtinal arusal (“Hw relaxing r stimulating is this pem?”), emtinal valence (“Hw psitive r
negative is the cntent f this pem?”), and aesthetic appeal (“Hw enjyable r aesthetically appealing did yu find this pem?”).
Their results shwed that vividness f mental imagery was the best predictr f aesthetic appeal — pems that evked greater imagery were mre pleasing. Emtinal valence als predicted aesthetic appeal, thugh t a lesser extent; specifically, pems that were fund t be mre psitive were generally fund t be mre appealing. By cntrast, emtinal arusal did nt have a clear relatinship t aesthetic appeal.
“The vividness f a pem cnsistently predicted its aesthetic appeal,” ntes Starr, authr f Feeling Beauty: The Neurscience f Aesthetic Experience. “Therefre, it seems that vividness f mental imagery may be a key factr influencing what we like mre bradly.” “While limited t petry,” she adds, “ur wrk sheds light int which facts mst influence ur aesthetic judgments and paves the way fr future research investigating hw we make such judgments in ther fields.”
    8. What did the researchers ask the participants t d?
    A. Evaluate pems f haiku and snnet.B. Write the aesthetic appeal f pems.
    C. Explain factrs f emtinal valence.D. Ask questins abut the pem’s vividness.
    9. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t paragraph 4?
    A. Pems with mre negative cntent are mre appealing.
    B. Emtinal arusal is negatively related t aesthetic appeal.
    C. Emtinal valence is the mst imprtant predictr f aesthetic appeal.
    D. Vividness f mental imagery has the strngest cnnectin with aesthetic appeal.
    10. What can be inferred frm Starr’s wrds?
    A. The research will help explre aesthetic judgments in ther fields.
    B. The finding f vividness being a key factr is nly applicable t petry.
    C. Emtinal valence shuld be further studied in the cntext f ther art frms.
    D. The research has little value fr understanding aesthetic judgments in ther areas.
    11. What is the main purpse f this passage?
    A. T intrduce different types f pems.B. T discuss the imprtance f aesthetics.
    C. T shw the findings f aesthetic appeal.D. T persuade peple t admire the pems.

Taking antixidant supplements such as vitamins C and E might make lung cancers grw bigger and spread by stimulating the frmatin f bld vessels within tumurs (肿瘤), accrding t a study in mice.
One researcher invlved has said that peple with the cnditin shuldn’t try t avid these antixidants in their diet, but getting mre than they need via supplements culd cause harm. Martin Bergö at the Karlinska Institute in Sweden and his clleagues previusly fund that supplementing with the antixidants vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine
caused lung cancers t spread in mice.
T better understand hw this might ccur, Bergö and a different team f researchers studied mice with a specific frm f lung cancer and mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells. They supplemented the mice’s water with vitamin C, which the animals naturally yield, and vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine, which they get frm their diet.
The researchers gave the mice increasing amunts f these antixidants, which made the levels f these antixidants in the mice higher than what was necessary. “Tday in sciety, a lt f peple eat healthily. They have sme supplements, and then they als cnsume ther antixidant-rich fds like ginger shts and smthies,” says Bergö, “If yu d all that, yu culd end up with the levels f dses — t much — that we’ re talking abut.”
The researchers fund that the higher the antixidant dses, the greater the rate f bld vessel frmatin in the tumurs. This was true fr mice with the specific lung cancer and thse with implanted human cancer cells. Increased bld vessel grwth wuld prbably lead t tumurs grwing and spreading, says Bergö, but they didn’t study this.
Bergö has stressed that peple with any frm f cancer shuldn’t change their diet n the basis f this research. “If yu tk away all the antixidants in fd, yu wuld get sick fr a range f reasns, such as vitamin deficiencies, and this wuld influence the cancer,” he says, “We’re fcusing n increased dses abve the required levels.”
    12. What is the effect f antixidant supplements n lung cancer?
    A. They help t reduce the risk f lung cancer.
    B. They have little significant impact n lung cancer.
    C. They prevent the frmatin f bld vessels in tumrs.
    D. They may cause the grwth and spread f lung cancer.
    13. What des the underlined wrd “yield” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Digest.B. Cmpse.C. Cnstruct.D. Prduce.
    14. Hw did the researchers study antixidants n mice with lung cancer?
    A. By implanting human cells nly.B. By varying the antixidant dses.
    C. By cmparing specific antixidants.D. By keeping antixidant dses fixed.
    15. What des Bergö emphasize abut the antixidants in cancer patients’ diets?
    A. Antixidants shuld be cmpletely avided.
    B. High dses f antixidants can directly cause cancer.
    C. Antixidants are necessary but their dses shuld be cntrlled.
    D. The study’s results shuld be used in adjusting the patients’ diets.
    【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. C

    【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项关于抗氧化剂补充剂对肺癌影响的研究。
    【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Taking antixidant supplements such as vitamins C and E might make lung cancers grw bigger and spread by stimulating the frmatin f bld vessels within tumurs (肿瘤), accrding t a study in mice.(一项小鼠研究显示,服用维生素C和E等抗氧化剂补充剂可能会通过刺激肿瘤内血管的形成,使肺癌生长得更大并发生扩散)”可知,抗氧化剂补充剂可能会导致肺癌的生长和扩散。故选D项。
    【13题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词所在句中“vitamin C, which the animals naturally yield (生素C,动物自然yield)”和“vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine, which they get frm their diet (维生素E和N-乙酰半胱氨酸,从饮食中获取)”是对比关系,说明维生素E和N-乙酰半胱氨酸是从饮食中获取,而生素C是动物自然产生。故划线词yield意思是“产生”,与D项Prduce同义。故选D项。
    【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The researchers gave the mice increasing amunts f these antixidants, which made the levels f these antixidants in the mice higher than what was necessary.(研究人员给老鼠增加了这些抗氧化剂的用量,这使得老鼠体内这些抗氧化剂的水平高于必要水平)”可知,研究人员是通过改变抗氧化剂的剂量来研究抗氧化剂对肺癌小鼠的影响的。故选B项。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Bergö has stressed that peple with any frm f cancer shuldn’t change their diet n the basis f this research. ‘If yu tk away all the antixidants in fd, yu wuld get sick fr a range f reasns, such as vitamin deficiencies, and this wuld influence the cancer,’ he says, ‘We’re fcusing n increased dses abve the required levels.’(Bergö强调,任何形式的癌症患者都不应该根据这项研究改变他们的饮食。‘如果你去掉食物中所有的抗氧化剂,你会因为一系列原因而生病,比如维生素缺乏,这会影响癌症,’他说,‘我们关注的是超过所需水平的剂量增加。’)”可知,Bergö强调抗氧化剂是必要的,但应该控制其剂量。故选C项。
