Next, Scheele mved arund the Hly Rman Empire, wrking fr different chemists and becming mre learned in his trade. In 1767, he mved t Stckhlm, where he discvered tartaric acid (酒石酸).
After three years in Stckhlm, he became the directr f the Lcke Labratry. It was there, while he was analyzing a strange reactin, that Scheele became the first persn t identify xygen.
He called the element “fire air” because he believed, based n the theries f his time, that a substance that made up fire was released frm items when they burned. Scheele believed xygen t be this substance, nt understanding that xygen is merely an element that facilitates (促进) the chemical reactin that is fire.
As histric as this discvery was, Scheele seldm gt credit fr it, largely because English scientist Jseph Priestley published findings n xygen befre Scheele, even thugh it is nw generally accepted that Scheele made the actual discvery first.
Thrugh his wrk, he thus expsed himself t many harmful materials. These chemicals had a deadly effect n Scheele, and he eventually died f kidney failure in 1786.
Sadly, in spite f his many achievements and the fact that he gave his life t chemistry, Carl Wilhelm Scheele is ften frgtten in the histry f science. Thugh he discvered many elements befre ther better-knwn scientists did, his unwillingness t bth attend meetings f the Ryal Swedish Academy f Sciences and t publish his wrk allwed ther scientists t take credit fr discveries that he had made.
