Dlphins can learn hw t hunt frm their mthers as we all knw. But Ind-Pacific bttlense dlphins in Western Australia’s Shark Bay are different. Sme may even pick up ne clever hunting behavir frm their peers (同伴). Studies befre had suggested the dlphins there can learn frm peers. But a new reprt is the first t prve the imprtance f scial netwrks ver ther factrs.
Sme Shark Bay dlphins als use a mre unusual tl-based feeding methd. It’s knwn as shelling. A dlphin will first trap underwater prey (猎物) in the large shell f a sea snail. Then the dlphin puts its sharp beak int the shell’s pening. It can nw lift the shell abve the water’s surface t shake the cntents int its muth.
This brief behavir appears t be rare. Frm 2007 t 2018, mre than 5,000. dlphins in the western gulf f Shark Bay were studied. Hwever, there were nly 42 shelling events. Only 19 dlphins exhibited the behavir. The researchers then analyzed the behavir f 310 dlphins that had been seen at least 11 times. These included 15 shellers. They mapped the dlphins’ netwrk f scial interactins (互动). Thse interactins explained shelling’s spread better than ther factrs. Just by spending time tgether and watching each ther, they are mre likely t pass thse behavirs t each ther.
Thse shells are fund in particular habitats. And animals that live in thse habitats wuld get thse shells. A dlphin’s shelling behavir culd als have been influenced during the lng time the animal spent with its mther. There is n questin that dlphins are smart. They watch each ther and see what thers d.

A new paper in the jurnal iScience shws that chimpanzees and grillas can be friends, bviusly with advantages fr all.
Over a 20-year perid, researchers, wrking at the Nuabalé-Ndki Natinal Park in the Republic f Cng, saw grillas fllw the sund f chimps t a big tree full f ripe fruits, and then c-feed at the same tree. They saw yung individuals f bth species (物种) playing with each ther—interactins that can help their develpment. And when the tw species met each ther, researchers saw grillas and chimps lk at the thers carefully and then cme clse t the nes they knew. They even saw chimpanzees beating their chests—a behavir assciated with grillas.
Researchers had inferred that cnnectins between the species culd perhaps be t avid predatrs (捕食者). But the apes’ behavir didn’t shw that t be a majr factr in their interactins. Instead, better searching fr fd seemed t be a key upside fr bth species—smetimes eating at the same tree, smetimes dining nearby n different fds.
Nt every interactin was warm and friendly. "Interspecific aggressin (攻击) was bidirectinal," the study ntes — but it never rse t the level f deadly aggressin that has happened between chimps and grillas in Gabn. There is sme risk frm these scial interactins, thugh: namely, disease transmissin. Twenty years ag, an Ebla utbreak killed thusands f grillas in central Africa.
The research makes a case fr cnservatin effrts that prtect the habitats where these grillas and chimpanzees interact. "N lnger can we think that an individual ape’s scial envirnment is entirely taken up by members f their wn species," said c-authr Jake Funkhuser. "The strength and persistence f scial relatinships that we bserved between apes shws a depth f scial awareness and many scial transmissin pathways that had nt been imagined befre."
32. What was fund during the lng-term research n grillas and chimps?
A.They behave exactly the same way.
B.They cmpete fr fd and habitats.
C.They can develp a gd friendship.
D.They fight against a cmmn enemy.
33. What may be the main reasn fr the cnnectin f the tw species?
A.Better seeking fr fd resurces.
B.Hiding frm their natural enemies.
C.Creating a safe living envirnment.
D.Preventing the lss f their habitats.
34. Why can the interactin f grillas and chimps be risky?
A.They take advantage f each ther.
B.They spread disease t each ther.
C.They drive each ther int a new place.
D.They depend n different trees fr fd.
35. What can be inferred frm Jake Funkhuser’s wrds?
A.They almst knew little abut the tw species.
B.They will cntinue t bserve ape species clsely.
C.They have fund a clse tie between the tw species.
D.They can tell the tw species apart much mre easily.
