Mre than three centuries after she made an adventurus transatlantic vyage t stud, butterflies, a rare cpy f the hand-clured masterwrk by the great naturalist and artist Maria Merian is returning t Amsterdam.
Metamrphsis f the Suriname is ne f the mst fascinating (有吸引力的) bks in natural histry, It included sme 60 richly clured plates illustrating the different stages f develpment that she had bserved in Suriname's insects. Metamrphsis f the Suriname is a wrk f art and scientific schlarship. Merian recrded the lcal names f plants and insects she studied. In cntrast t ther Eurpean naturalists, she credited lcal peple with helping her discver the clny's wildlife, althugh didn’t name individuals.
Brn in 1647 in Frankfurt, Germany, Merian learned t paint in her artist father’s wrkshp, and became fascinated by silkwrms, mths and butterflies. At that time, insects were believed t spring frth magically frm mud, waste and plant matter in a prcess knwn as “spntaneus generatin”. While Merian was nt the first t shw the transfrmatin frm egg t adult insect, her artistic talents helped t bring this message t a wider audience The pineering wrk f Merian was celebrated fr its scientific accuracy and fr bringing a new standard f precisin t scientific illustratin.
In 1691, Merian mved t Amsterdam and pened her wn studi. She wrked as an independent artist and prepared specimens fr a grwing market f cllectrs. In Amsterdam, Merian had access t sme f the finest natural histry cllectins in the wrld. As she assciated with famus schlars, physicians and btanists, ideas fr her wn vyage f discvery began t take shape. At 52, she embarked n (开始) a self-funded vyage t Suriname, driven by curisity abut the lives f insects.
Her image wuld be dismissed as a fantasy. In the 18th century, peple respnded: “that’s what yu get when yu send a wman t trpical places. She prbably made that up”. But scientists later cnfirmed her findings. The spider plate was a very gd example f hw Merian wrked. She was a really gd bserver.

Tday’s digital media deliver rapid messages ― such as phne ntificatins and text verlays n vides ― t ur brains at an impressive speed, far faster than spken wrds reach us. But can we prcess these texts as quickly as we can determine the makeup f the visuals that are als a part f ur screen life?
The scientists began their research by cnsidering current scientific explanatins f hw we understand language, which center n wrd-by-wrd sentence prcessing mdels. They cncluded these dn’t effectively accunt fr hw quickly ur brains can prcess entire sentences seen at a glance, as ppsed t wrd by wrd like in speech.
The scientists used a technique called magnetencephalgraphy, which uses magnetic (磁的) fields t track electrical activity in the brain. While being scanned, vlunteers were presented with a three -wrd sentence structure that flashed nt a screen fr 300 millisecnds, fllwed by a secnd set f wrds that was either identical r differed by ne wrd. The participants were asked t assess whether the secnd sentence was the same as the first r had been changed.
The scans revealed that the left tempral crtex f the brain, which is an imprtant part f the brain’s ability t understand language, shwed higher levels f activity fr three-wrd sentences than randm wrd lists. The activity appeared in just 125 millisecnds. The fastest brain activity was bserved when phrases like “nurses clean wunds” were presented, in cmparisn t nun lists such as “hearts lungs livers”.
A similar rapid respnse was nted when sentences with a subject, verb and bject were altered s that they cntained an agreement errr ― fr example “nurses cleans wunds” ― r became implausible (难以置信的), fr example “wunds clean nurses”. But the effect disappeared when the sentences were given less typical structures, fr example “wunds nurses clean” r “wunds cleans nurses”.
While the authrs nte they fcused n English, adding that rapid at-a-glance cm prehensin may rely n ther features in different languages, they say the study ffers new insights. “The earliest stage f at-a-glance cmprehensin appears t be mre structure than meaning driven,” they write.
28. What did the new research fcus n?
A. The impact f cnstant fld f shrt messages.
B. Human brain’s cmprehensin f screen visuals.
C. The essence f wrd-by-wrd sentence prcessing.
D. Human brain’s at-a-glance sentence cmprehensin.
29.What task did researchers set fr vlunteers f the experiment?
A. Indicating whether the sentences match.
B. Crrecting mistakes in the flashed sentences.
C. Interpreting the meanings f unstructured sentences.
D. Cmbining unrelated wrds t frm meaningful sentences.
30. Which f the fllwing was assciated with the quickest brain respnse?
A. Lists f nuns.B. Three-wrd sentences.
C. Unstructured wrds.D. Less typical structures
31.What des the last paragraph talk abut cncerning the research?

In Mrten Tyldum’s mvie Passengers, characters Jim Prestn and Aurra Lane are n a 120-year interstellar jurney with 5,000 ther peple. Their destinatin: Hmestead II, a new wrld t start their lives anew. T survive the travel, passengers entered hibernatin(冬眠), each ne frzen in their wn pd. Hwever, smething ges wrng and Jim and Aurra wake up 90 years t early. But what if we tld yu that hibernatin fr space travel is mre likely t happen than the rmantic stry between Jim and Aurra?
Hibernatin is a state in which living rganisms slw dwn their metablic (新陈代谢的) prcesses while maintaining essential functins. Once inside these pds, astrnauts will get drugs t adjust metablism, reduce cre temperature, and cause inactivity. Once back n Earth, they will wake up and gradually readpt their nrmal functinal metablism.
Fr ging t Mars, astrnauts wuld require abut 30 kg f fd, water, air, and ther supplies per day. Thus, hibernatin can significantly cut dwn n their essential needs Additinally, hibernating astrnauts wuldn’t get bred, stressed, r lnely, and less time and space wuld be needed t help keep them fit r entertained.
But this is merely the thery. Space agencies are investigating whether reducing bdy temperature and later inducing(导致)metablism is a mre practical ptin, while mst research prjects are currently fcusing n animals. The questin is: hw can we evke hibernatin in species that are nt nrmally ding that? And this is why the research n rats, nt naturally hibernating animals, is interesting, Research n bears is als imprtant since their bdy size is mre relatable t urs.
The cncept is nt being cnsidered fr the frthcming Mars missin, but fr lnger missins t farther destinatins such as the uter planets, it culd be a very useful technlgy Hibernatin fr humans is an ethically cntrversial cncept, and critics may cnsider it as a mad scientist’s dream. Hwever, withut such dreamers, humanity wuld still be in the Middle Ages.
32.Why des the authr mentin the mvie Passengers?
A. T advertise a ppular sci-fi space mvie.
B. T intrduce a new apprach t lng spaceflights.
C. T explre the pssibility f settling anther planet.
D. T reveal the ptential dangers f lng space travels
33. What happens t hibernating astrnauts?
A. Their functinal metablism is disturbed.
B. They need mre time and space fr entertainment.
C. They lse the balance between basic needs and supplies.
D. Their physical and mental needs are reduced t a minimum
34. What des the underlined wrd “evke” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Initiate.B. Justify.C. Define.D. Priritize.
35.What des the authr think f hibernatin fr humans?
A. It may be a risky strategy.
B. It is a dream hard t realize.
C. It can advance scial prgress.
D. It challenges traditinal mral values.

Try t understand what yur critic is saying and seek clarificatin if yu need t.
Thank thse ffering the criticism. Smetimes they’re cming frm a place f wanting t help yu. That takes curage, and is a very generus thing. Even when they’re nt trying t be helpful, they’ve taken the time t respnd t yu. 40 Causing a reactin means yu've dne smething interesting ― and fr that, yu shuld be thankful.

M: Thank yu, students, teachers, and Principal Martins fr the kind intrductin yu gave befre welcming me t this stage. It's an hnr t be back here, standing n this very grund where it all began. I remember sitting in this gym as a 9th-grade high schl student, filled with dreams.
I’ve always been a runner, but it wasn't until 10th grade that I jined the track team. And still, it tk anther year after that t realize I wanted t run prfessinally. But it wasn’t the success that I was chasing, it was the discipline. Waking up with a purpse, a team f runners with me, and a cach wh wuld d anything t see us imprve is what mtivated me. At that age, I didn’t really believe in myself. But when I fund great rle mdels wh I trusted, I started t becme a leader myself.
Years later, I brught the lessns I learned right here at this schl t the Olympic Village. Nw I can say that these lessns helped me win my medals, inspired my team, and created the man I am tday.
S, abve all else, I say this t this schl's students: stay pen-minded and appreciate everyne wh is guiding yu. These lessns can lead yu t greatness!
