The Gamberini family business, Ocean Reef Grup, specialised in diving equipment. Agriculture was nt part f the picture. Hwever, a decade ag, Luca Gamberini’s father decided t turn t underwater farming.
T start, they used small, transparent(透明的)ballns sunk belw the water and filled with air, making an underwater dme(穹顶). The plants are grwn in a sil-free way.
The dmes prvide the plants’ water by harvesting freshwater frm seawater. The dmes are slightly htter than the utside sea temperature, which means that water frm the seawater ‘flr’ steams inside the dme and gathers n its inside surface as freshwater. This then ‘rains’ n the plants.
This setup als allws an exchange f CO2 frm the cean inside the dme, adds Gamberini. “We’ve nticed that this envirnment desn’t really need t be refilled that much, ” he says. The light frm the Sun that reaches underwater is als sufficient fr the grwth f the plants, Gamberini adds.
T tend t the plants, divers enter the dmes frm belw, their legs still in the water while their upper bdy in the air. When plants are harvested, they are placed in reusable bags r cntainers, which are sealed and brught t the surface f the sea t be cllected.

There are als sme things t be imprved, like the incnvenience f planting and harvesting. Hwever, Littlejhn says farming underwater, as the underwater garden is ding, is “necessary”, fr future space explratin. “Prbably the experience gained frm grwing underwater will give benefits in explring further than we can yet see,” he says.
12. Hw are plants watered inside the underwater dmes?
A. They can get rain frm the sky.
B. They can take in seawater directly.
C. Freshwater is made frm seawater inside the dmes.
D. Freshwater is supplied frm the cast.
