Runners wh encunter visual and auditry (听觉的) distractins (分心) may be mre likely t suffer leg injuries, accrding t a research by the Assciatin f Academic Physiatrists in Las Vegas. Runners ften seek distractins frm the task at hand. Whether it is music, texting, daydreaming, taking in the sights, r prpping a bk up n the treadmill (跑步机), mre ften than nt a distractin is welcme. But, researchers frm the University f Flrida have recently discvered that thse distractins may lead t injury.
Daniel Herman, MD, PhD, assistant prfessr at University f Flrida, and his team cnducted a research n the effect f visual and auditry distractins n 14 runners t determine what effect, if any, these distractins wuld have n things such as heart rate, hw much a runner breathes per minute, hw much xygen is cnsumed by the bdy, the speed in which runners apply frce t their bdies, and the frce the grund applies t the runners’ bdies when they cme in cntact with it.
The runners were all injury free at the time f the study and ran 31 miles each week. Dr. Herman’s team had each participant run n a treadmill three separate times. The first time was withut any distractins. The secnd time added a visual distractin, during which the runners cncentrated n a screen displaying different letters in different clrs with the runners having t nte when a specific letter-clr cmbinatin appeared. The third time added an auditry distractin similar t the visual distractin, with the runners having t nte when a particular wrd was spken by a particular vice.
When cmpared t running withut distractins, the participants had faster applicatin f frce t their left and right legs, called lading rate, with auditry and visual distractins. They als experienced an increased amunt f frce frm the grund n bth legs, called grund reactin frce, with auditry distractins. Finally, the runners tended t breathe heavier and have higher heart rates with visual and auditry distractins than withut any distractins at all.
"Running in envirnments with different distractins may unfavrably affect running perfrmance and injury risk," explains Dr. Herman. "Smetimes these things cannt be avided, but yu may be able t minimize ptentially cumulative (累积的) effects. Fr example, when running a new rute in a chatic envirnment such as during a destinatin marathn, yu may want t skip listening t smething which may require mre attentin — like a new sng playlist."
Dr. Herman’s team will cntinue t investigate the ptential relatinship between distracted running and leg injuries, and any effect this relatinship has n different training techniques that use auditry r visual cues.
5.Paragraph 2 tells us the research ______.
A.prcess
B.questins
C.results
D.reflectin
6.Based n the research, runners with auditry distractins tended t ______.
A.breathe heavier and have lwer heart rates
B.gain a faster speed with slwer lading rates
C.apply mre frce with less xygen cnsumptin
D.get an increased amunt f grund reactin frce
7.What can we infer frm the passage?
A.Running with distractins becmes uncmmn nwadays.
B.Listening t a new sng while running guarantees perfrmance.
C.Runners are advised t minimize distractins in a destinatin marathn.
D.Runners are mre likely t get injured in an envirnment withut distractins.
8.What is prbably the next task fr Dr. Herman’s team?
A.What determines training techniques.
B.What effective ways can cure leg injuries.
C.Why runners use auditry and visual cues.
D.Hw distractins shuld be used in training.

Peple with vice disrders can ften find it difficult r impssible t speak. That may sn change. A team f engineers has invented a sft, thin, flexible device that can be attached t the skin utside the thrat t help peple with vice disrders regain their vice functin.
The new device can translate muscular mvements int speech, enabling peple t talk withut using their vcal crds (声带). It nt nly detects the mvements f the thrat assciated with speech, but als uses that mvement t generate electricity, meaning the device can be perated withut a battery (电池) r being plugged in.
Lead study authr Jun Chen, an assistant prfessr f biengineering, said the idea fr the device arse after he’d spent several hurs lecturing and felt his vice becming tired. He began t imagine a way t slve this prblem, making it pssible fr a persn t speak withut using their vcal crds.
That thught led Chen and his team t design a sft patch (贴片) that respnds t the slight stress placed n it by the mvement f thrat muscles. The patch respnds by prducing electrical signals when a persn makes the mvements needed t talk. They then get fed t a machine-learning algrithm (算法) that translates the pulses int speech. T train the algrithm, each participant in the study repeated five shrt phrases 100 times each while the prgram tracked their thrat mvements. This taught the system t assciate specific mvements with a given phrase.
In a demnstratin f the tech invlving eight peple withut speech prblems, the algrithm was abut 95% accurate at translating the patch’s electrical pulses int speech.
Althugh these results are prmising, the patch is still in the early stages f develpment. Its testing was limited t just eight peple saying a few phrases, and it has yet t be tested in peple with speech disrders. Anther prblem is that the current manufacturing prcess fr the patch wuld need t be scaled up and made mre efficient fr a large number f patches t be prduced.

A.It is self-pwered.
B.It can cure vice disrders.
C.It relies heavily n the vcal crds.
D.It can increase the sund f the vice.

A.His damaged vcal crds.
B.His tiring lecturing experience.
C.His meeting with a biengineering prfessr.
D.His desire t help peple with vice disrders.
14.What des the underlined wrd "They" in paragraph 4 refer t?
A.Thrat mvements.
B.Shrt phrases.
C.Electrical signals.
D.Sft patches.
15.Which aspect f the device is stressed in the last paragraph?
A.Its weaknesses.
B.Its functins.
C.Its develpment.
D.Its ppularity.
