With my lad f magazines, I headed tward Belleville Avenue. The crwds were there. There were tw gas statins n the crner f Belleville and Unin. Fr several hurs, I made myself highly visible, making sure everyne culd see me and the heavy black letters n the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back hme.

    “Yu just std there?”
    “Didn’t sell a single ne.”
    “My Gd. Russell!”
Uncle Allen put in, “Well, I’ve decided t take the Pst.” I handed him a cpy and he paid me a nickle (五分镍币). It was the first nickle I earned.
Afterwards my mther taught me hw t be a salesman, I wuld have t ring drbells, address adults with self-cnfidence, and persuade them by saying that n ne, n matter hw pr, culd affrd t be withut the Saturday Evening Pst in the hme.
One day, I tld my mther I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want t made a success in the magazine business.
“If yu think yu can change yur mind like this,” she replied, “yu’ll becme a gd-fr-nthing.” She insisted that, as sn as schl was ver, I shuld start ringing drbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said n, she wuld scld me.
My mther and I had fught this battle almst as lng as I culd remember. My mther, dissatisfied with my father’s plain wrkman’s life, determined that I wuld nt grw up like him and his peple. Handwritten Chinese characters can be beautiful. I still remember lking at Chinese and nt understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strng attractin. In fact, sme students start learning Chinese because f the characters. After having studied Chinese fr a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese takes a very lng time t learn.
Living as we d in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphnes and cmputers, mst students sner r later ask themselves this questin: Is it really necessary t learn hw t write by hand in Chinese? When using smartphnes r cmputers, we can use phnetic input (语音输入) systems, which chse the characters we want fr us as lng as we can remember hw they are prnunced. When we enter different characters, we seldm need t be able t recgnize the difference between characters in detail, because the cmputer makes the right chices fr us. D we really need t write Chinese by hand?
I think mst peple agree that yu shuld learn t write at least sme characters at sme pint as a student f Chinese, althugh nt necessarily straight away and nt necessarily all the characters that yu can say. But unless yu dn’t care abut written language at all, yu shuld learn the basics f handwriting. Withut them, it will be very hard t understand characters. Yu dn’t need t be a calligraphy master, but yu d need basic handwriting skills t d this. Simply lking at things is, as usual, a bad way f learning.
I think learning the mst cmmn 500 r s characters is a gd idea fr all students. If yu actually want t write by hand, increase that t 1,000. Then learn t handwrite characters utside f the 1,000 mst cmmn nes n a need-t-knw basis.
    28. What des the authr think f Chinese characters?
    A. They are less understandable than English wrds.
    B. They attract sme freigners t learn Chinese.
    C. They shw the greatness f Chinese culture.
    D. They are nt really that difficult.
    29. What can we infer abut Chinese characters in Paragraph 2?
    A. Chinese characters are very difficult fr freigners t learn.
    B. Peple believe learning t write Chinese characters is imprtant.
    C. Peple dubt the necessity f learning t write Chinese characters.
    D. Chinese characters may disappear with the develpment f sciety.
    30. What des the underlined wrd “this” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
    A. Understanding Chinese characters.
    B. Being a calligraphy master.
    C. Getting int a gd learning habit.
    D. Learning basic handwriting skills.
31.What wuld be the best title fr the text?
    A. Is it necessary t learn t write Chinese characters by hand?
    B. When was the last time yu wrte smething by hand?
    C. What rules are there fr handwriting?
    D. Hw t write Chinese characters n a cmputer?
    D
Yu knw the feeling. Yu finish a full meal and are like “I’m never eating again.” But then, ut cmes a beautiful piece f cake. And, yu said yu were full, but nt fr dessert! It turns ut yu really can “make rm” fr dessert.
And there’s a scientific reasn why. The thing that gives yu rm fr dessert is called “Sensry-Specific Satiety”. That’s what Dr. Rlls, a nutritinal scientist, has been studying since the 1980s. Here is hw her experiment went. She gave six peple a giant plate f spaghetti and tld them t eat until they were full. And then, fr the secnd curse, she gave them mre. Then, she gave them ice cream. On average, after they said they were full n spaghetti, each persn culd eat just ne mre unce f it in their secnd serving. But when she gave them ice cream, smehw they culd eat three times as much. They “made rm” fr dessert.
The experiment shws that when yu feel full, it’s nt necessarily that yur stmach is physically full. It’s mre abut hw interested yu are in eating mre. Sensry-specific satiety is the change in hw much yu like a fd, hw much yu want t eat, as yu’re eating it. “I’ve just had enugh f the fd; I want smething else” is really what sensry-specific satiety is.
And that natural ability has a purpse: it’s meant t keep us healthy. It’s ging t help t guarantee that we’re ging t eat the variety f nutrients that we need. Hwever, it can backfire f curse, because if we are presented with a variety f fds, it makes us extra likely t vereat.
    32. What’s the purpse f the first paragraph?
    A. T make a cmparisn. B. T lead t the main tpic.
    C. T amuse the readers. D. T summarize the main idea.
    33. Accrding t Dr. Rlls, why did the peple “make rm” fr ice cream?
    A. Because they had a wrng feeling.
    B. Because there was a change in fd variety.
    C. Because they lied abut feeling full.
    D. Because the ice cream was mre delicius.
    34. What des the underlined wrd “backfire” prbably mean?
    A. Cnsume much energy. B. Discurage peple frm eating.
    C. Have the ppsite result. D. Prduce a helpful effect.
    35. In which sectin f a newspaper may the text appear?
    A. Entertainment. B. Educatin. C. Culture. D. Health.
