The best way t learn new skills has been widely debated. In 2008, Malclm Gladwell published Outliers, which intrduced the s-called “10,000 hurs rule” that states it takes 10,000 hurs t becme an expert in a subject.
But frm a psychlgical perspective, what makes smene a master learner? Let’s break dwn what this invlves.
Yu’re willing t learn frm peple yu dn’t like.
We tend t get annyed with peple wh dn’t share ur view f the wrld. Peple wh are different frm us will tend t apprach prblems differently. That’s exactly why they ffer pprtunities t learn. Yu dn’t need t buy int smene’s’ values abut the wrld t learn frm them and they can ffer a new perspective.
Yu’re ready t learn thrugh different mdes and channels.
Stick t ne cmfrtable mde f learning is a bad idea. Master learners are willing t learn frm lts f surces, including the fllwing: technical dry bks r manuals, YuTube r Instagram, calling r visiting peple they dn’t knw, searching the internet and thrugh friendships and scial relatinships.
Yu can reflect n yur wrk and think utside f the bx.
Master learners dn’t just becme gd in their field. They think abut what they learn in ways that aren’t fcused n ne tpic. The smartest, mst creative peple dn’t rely slely n fcus fr getting things dne. They allw their minds t mve in creative ways and cnnect seemingly diverse cncepts and tls that ther peple dn’t cnnect.
Yu apprach learning with yur learning bjectives in mind.
I lve learning abut ther peple’s learning prcesses. I nce watched a vide made by a medical student wh stpped ging t lectures. She recgnized that the lectures weren’t as efficient r effective as reading her wn bks .Master learners dn’t fllw smene ease’s learning plan. Fr example they dn`t use ne language learning app fr hundreds f lessns withut explring ther ptins. They develp their wn learning plan based n their specific learning bjectives.
31. Accrding t the text, what is a characteristic f master learners?

Histrian Sir Simn Schama is als a supprter f the prject. He thinks that arts educatin in schls is nt just an add-n. “It is abslutely necessary. Can yu d anything fr 10 mnths straight withut stpping? Dance, ride a bike, drive a car, stand in ne place? N? Didn’t think s. Humans are nt set up fr that srt f thing. We lack that kind f endurance.
But that’s nt true fr sme animals. A little bird called the cmmn swift (Apus apus) can fly fr10 mnths straight withut landing. Scientists fund this ut. They used a new type f data lgger. It detects bth light and the mvement f the birds. Sme birds might land ccasinally fr brief perids. Mst remain airbrne fr their entire10- mnth migratin perid. They land nly fr their tw-mnth breeding seasn.
“This discvery significantly pushes the bundaries fr what we knw abut animal physilgy. A ten-mnth flight perid is the lngest we knw f any bird species. It’s a recrd,” says Dr. Anders Hedenstróm. He is a Lund University bilgist.
Many birds can fly lng distances. The wandering albatrss, fr instance, can travel 10,000 miles (16,090 kilmeters) withut flapping its wings even nce. Hummingbirds can fly 29 millin times the length f their wn bdy withut stpping.
What’s strange abut the cmmn swift, thugh, is that its flight requires almst cnstant wing- flapping. This makes its migratry habits even mre f a physilgical mystery. When d the swifts sleep? D they sleep? Hw culd they pssibly eat enugh t stay s active fr s lng? What is their deal?
The researchers dn’t have answers t any f these questins yet. They fund that the birds that never landed a single time in the10-mnth perid had mlted (换羽) all f their flight feathers. They had grwn new nes. The birds that landed ccasinally didn’t mlt their wing feathers. Still, there is hardly any difference in flight time between thse that rested and thse that didn’t. Of the 13 birds wearing data lggers, even the individuals that ccasinally tk a lad ff stayed n the wing 99.5 percent f the time during the 10-mnth perid.
41. What did the scientist use t discver the flight duratin f the cmmn swift?
A. Satellite tracking.B. High speed cameras.
C. Radar technlgy.D. A new type f data lgger.
42. What perid is the lngest knwn fr any bird species, as stated by Dr. Anders Hedenstróm?
A. six-mnth flight perid.B. A ten-mnth flight perid.
C. An eight-mnth flight perid.D. A year-lng flight perid.
43. What distinguishes the cmmn swift’s flight frm f her birds?
A. It requires frequent dives.B. It invlves hvering in place.
C. It requires never-ending wing-flapping.D. It invlves gliding at high altitude.
44. Which is nt the physilgical mystery abut the cmmn swift’s migratry habits?
A. Hw they manage t flap their wings cnstantly fr 10 mnths.
B. Hw they find enugh fd t sustain themselves fr such a lng perid.
C. Whether they sleep r nt during their lng flights.
D. Whether they mlt their feathers r nt during their lng flights.
45. What is the main idea f the passage regarding the cmmn swift?
A. The cmmn swifts can fly fr a lng perid withut stpping.
B. The cmmn swift has a shrter migratin perid than ther birds.
C. Birds generally dn’t need t land fr mnths at a time.
D. The cmmn swift is the nly bird capable f lng-duratin flight.

Neither Pine nr Apple in Pineapple
Have yu ever asked yurself why peple ften have truble learning English? I hadn’t, until ne day my five-year-ld sn asked me whether there was ham in a hamburger. There isn’t. This made me realize that there’s n egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nr apple in pineapple. This gt me thinking hw English can be a crazy language t learn.
Fr example, in ur free time we can sculpt a sculpture and paint a painting, but we take a pht. And when we are traveling we say that we are in the car r the taxi, but n the train r bus! While we’re ding all this traveling, we can get seasick at sea, airsick in the air and carsick in a car, but we dn’t get hmesick when we get back hme. And speaking f hme, why aren’t hmewrk and husewrk the same thing?
If “hard” is the ppsite f “sft”, why are “hardly” and “sftly” nt an ppsing pair? If harmless actins are the ppsite f harmful actins, why are shameless and shameful behavirs the same?
When we lk ut f the windw and see rain r snw, we can say “it’s raining” r “it’s snwing”. But when we see sunshine, we can’t say “it’s sunshining”.
Even the smallest f wrds can be cnfusing. When yu see the capitalized “WHO” in a medical reprt, d yu read it as the “wh” in “Wh’s that?” What abut “IT” and “US”?
Yu als have t wnder at the unique madness f a language in which a huse can burn up as it burns dwn, in which yu fill in a frm by filling it ut, and in which an alarm is nly heard nce it ges ff!
English was invented by peple, nt cmputers, and it reflects the creativity f the human race. That is why when the stars are ut, they are visible, but when the lights are ut, they are invisible. And that is why when I wind up my watch, it starts, but when I wind up this passage, it ends.
46. What is the purpse f the first paragraph?
A. T tell us English is difficult t learn.
B. T lead t the tpic f discussin.
C. T intrduce English is interesting and creative.
D. T direct ur attentin t the wrd frmatin.
47. Hw is the text develped?
A. By stating arguments.
B. By making cmparisns.
C. By giving examples.
D. By prviding research results.
48. Which f the fllwing statements is NOT true accrding t the passage?
A. When we see sunshine, we can say “it’s sunshining”.
B. When we are traveling, we say that we are in the car r the taxi, but n the train r bus!
C. When we lk ut f the windw and see rain r snw, we can say “it’s raining” r “it’s snwing”
D. When yu see the capitalized “WHO” in a medical reprt, we can’t read it as the “wh” in “Wh’s that?”
49. What d the tw phrases “wind up” in the last paragraph mean?
A. “They bth mean” t end an activity, a meeting, etc.
B. “They bth mean” t make a machine, ty, clck, etc. wrk by turning a small handle arund and arund’
C. “The first means” t end an activity, a meeting, etc., “while the secnd means” t make a machine, ty, clck, etc. wrk by turning a small handle arund and arund"
D. “The first means” t make a machine, ty, clck, etc. wrk by turning a small handle arund and arund, “while the” secnd means “t end an activity, a meeting, etc.”
50. What is the main idea f the text?
A. T shw the unique madness f English.
B. T shw sme interesting English stries.
C. T intrduce the interesting features f English.
D. T intrduce the methds f learning English.
