In 2014, my father, Michael, was diagnsed with Parkinsn’s disease, which shcked the whle family as he was nly in his frties.
A husband and father f three, Dad had a successful career running a painting studi and was always extremely creative. Even in the advanced stages f Parkinsn’s, my father decided t keep painting. Outside f wrk, he spent 15 years leading a band, Musical Chairs, which perfrmed at the pub in Sydney’s Duble Bay each week. When I became a mther, he develped a very clse bnd with my daughter, Prtia. Even after his diagnsis, his passin fr music remained unwavering, and his lve fr Prtia cntinued t grw strnger.
Unfrtunately, in 2022, he was diagnsed with kidney cancer and given just three mnths t live. As mnths turned t years, my father seemed a walking miracle, but his health was suffering. Knwing that he wanted t share his paintings with the wrld, I decided t rganize an exhibitin fr him. By then he had painted 660 wrks.
I hadn’t dne anything like this befre. When I was yunger my father always tld me “Just say yes and then wrk ut hw t d it later”, s I figured this philsphy wuld guide me thrugh.
S in Octber last year, we welcmed the public t “My Kids Culd D That”, my father’s first public shwing, held at the Museum f Cntemprary Art Australia in Sydney. Everyne lved his wrks. I was thrilled t see Dad had fund the cnfidence t call himself an artist at last. His eyes lit up with pride, seeing the walls filled with his wrks. I’ve gt three f his pieces in my hme and I can’t be mre prud f what he has achieved.

The wd strk is the nly strk that breeds in Nrth America. In 1984, it was declared an endangered species after its ppulatin fell t just 5,000 mating pairs. At the time, scientists predicted that the bird wuld be cmpletely wiped ut by 2000.Tday, it numbers 10,000 mating pairs, and US Fish and Wildlife Service is prpsing a deletin f the wd strk as an endangered species.

The wd strk’s native hme was in the Everglades in Flrida, but it migrated nrth as the Everglades were being destryed by develpment. In 1987, frmer Savannah Natinal Wildlife Refuge bilgist Jhn Rbinette nticed strk nests in Gergia as strk ppulatins mved t safer wetlands.
Accrding t Stephanie Kurse, a senir plicy specialist at the Centre fr Bilgical Diversity, the Endangered Species Act is als the key factr t this recvery. In an email t Natinal Public Radi, she said, “The act saved the wd strk and it helped preserve and rebuild vital habitats thrughut the sutheast, which has imprved water quality and benefited cuntless ther species that call the area hme.”
The Endangered Species Act has saved many f the species that were n the list since 1973. A hundred types f plants and animals have been delisted (从表上剔除) as their ppulatins becme stable again.
