    (A)
Yu knw what they say, marriage is like a bx f chclates and yu never knw what yu are gnna get. My wife and I had a “fercius” argument the ther night 1 we were watching ne episde f the latest seasn f a reality shw called See Yu Again. Basically, the shw was abut three cuples 2 (embark) n an 18-day vacatin t try t wrk ut their marital issues in the hpe f saving their marriages. Fr them, it was really a make-it-r-break-it vacatin.
3 we bth agreed n mst men’s incmpetence in expressing their true feelings in any intimate relatinship, my still belved wife and I failed miserably t see eye t eye n reasns fr that. She blamed it n men’s upbringing while I thught it had mre t d with the influence f utdated scial nrms and steretypes n men.
Our sciety 4 (discurage) emtinal expressin in men fr ages, telling them they can’t shed a tear r shw any vulnerability. These utdated ideas abut what it means t be a man have messed them up big time. T me, it is n wnder that in the marriage market, the mst cmmn type available 5 wmen is the silent but dminant type f men with the whle breadwinner and hmemaker rles still 6 (stick) in their heads. S when things dn’t g that way, f curse, they will feel lst.
“Intimidated” by my rigrus lgic, my wife purpsefully shifted the fcus f her argument t 7 we tw shuld raise ur sn and what I culd have dne better if I had taken her advice seriusly.
Hwever, things started t get much 8 (persnal) when bth f us seemed t run ut f witty arguments. Realizing this disagreement wuld lead us nwhere, I wasted n time aplgizing t her fr my ill-cnsidered wrds with dignity and ffered t clean the plates piling up in the sink 9 I cked dinner that night! Faced with an ffer she culdn’t refuse, my wife kindly reminded me 10 (nt frget) t dry the twel when I was dne. Aplgy accepted, hence case clsed.
At the end f the day, I exhibited my vulnerability as requested and she shwed her mercy as expected. We just agreed t disagree and lived happily ever after.
    Sectin B
Directins: Fill in each blank with a prper wrd chsen frm the bx. Each wrd can be used nly nce. Nte that there is ne wrd mre than yu need.
The pst millennial generatin best knwn as Gen Z — individuals nw in their teens and early 20s — lked n as their parents lst jbs during the Great Recessin. They’ve seen lder millennial siblings 11 in student debt. Since they culd eat slid fd, they’ve watched n prmising technlgy displace anther, and, alng with lder generatins, have questined everything frm the gig ecnmy t the 12 f demcracy. Nw they’re entering 13 with a willingness t experiment.
“The ld systems we used t rely n aren’t wrking anymre, but new systems haven’t necessarily been put in 14 ,” says Melissa Lavigne-Delville, funder f the trends and research firm Culture C-p, which specializes in generatinal attitudes. “Parents aren’t even sure abut hw t 15 their children, because t much is up in the air.”
Accrding t a survey by her firm, 78% f Gen Z-ers say getting a fur-year degree n lnger makes ecnmic 16 , and hundreds f prgrams, frm apprenticeships t bt camps, have crpped up t ffer a(n) 17 path. New types f wrk are pssible t. Research has fund that teenagers are getting their driver’s licenses later and ding less traditinal wrk-fr-pay than previus generatins. But while they might nt be 18 tickets at the lcal cineplex, they may be starting a ppular YuTube channel frm their bedrm. Culture C-p fund that nearly 60% f Gen Z-ers, ages 13 t 22, say they are ding sme frm f freelancing. Dew, fr ne, didn’t have a jb in high schl but did teach himself t cde and is building websites n the side while he attends MissinU.
Jumping int the freelance ecnmy means taking an uncertain path, as is 19 ne’s future earnings n an educatinal prgram n ne has tried befre. Almst $2 billin has been invested in “last mile training” effrts like MissinU, but many yung peple are still 20 fr cllege.
    II.Reading Cmprehensin (共45分。 21-35每题1分;36-50每题2分)
    Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext
The picture f miseries and sufferings f the Black wman in America may appear, perhaps darker and mre depressing than Dante’s (但丁) descriptin f Hell because in the histry f human race, the Black wman in America has suffered the mst. A clse and critical 21 f the histry f the Black wman’s life and cnditin since her arrival in a strange land will unfld very well the lng stry f her pain and srrw 22 her mutilated (被切断的) sul. Since her arrival n the freign shre, the Black wman has been facing the wrst kind f 23 and ppressin. As a Black she has had t endure all the hrrrs f slavery and has been the 24 f cntinually inhumane treatment in all kinds f wrk, 25 the lwest place n the wage scale and restricted t the lwest-status and the mst uncreative jbs. Since times f slavery, Black wmanhd has been destryed, twisted and abused with racial and inhuman 26 by black men and white men and wmen. In the prcess, they have lst their genuine “self”, and have develped a(n) 27 in themselves — thugh as black wmen, they see themselves with the eyes f white men and wmen and black men. This has ultimately been respnsible fr the destructin f their self-cnfidence and the feeling f being human. They 28 themselves as masters’ belngings.
As a mther she has seen her children sld int slavery. She has seen them left at hme withut attentin while she 29 t the needs f the children f the ruling class. She has seen her children suffer frm drug addictin, the 30 f decent educatin and experience attacks by a racist sciety, and 31 the prisns f this natin. In additin, besides suffering the cmmn fate f all ppressed peple, the African-American wmen cntinue t 32 the ppressin f wman by men, which existed fr lng. In the hme she becmes “the slave f a slave”. Men may be cruelly treated and subjected t all srts f dehumanizing treatment n the part f the ruling class. 33 , at least they can take ut their frustratin n smene else, their wmen.
Thus feminism in America means much mre than what it stands fr in ther Eurpean cuntries, chiefly because it has different rle and meaning 34 the Black wmen. If a feminist is cmmnly defined as ne wh is invlved in transfrming and 35 familiar realities, then Black wmen are innate (天生的) feminists. Black wmen writing exhibits and cnstructs a Black wmen’s literary traditin that is inherently feminist. Barbara Smith, an influential Black feminist critic, states that the ability f Black wmen t survive in the face f White America exhibits an innate feminist ptential.

The day I met Hani Irmawati, she was a shy, 17-year-ld girl standing alne in the parking lt f the internatinal schl in Indnesia, where I teach English. She asked if I culd help her imprve her English. I culd tell it tk immense (巨大的) curage fr the yung Indnesian girl t apprach me and ask fr help.
“I want t g t a US university,” she said with cnfidence. I was surprised.
I agreed t wrk with her n a vlunteer basis. Fr several mnths, Hani wke each mrning at five and caught the city bus t her public high schl. During the ride, she studied fr her regular classes and the English assignments I had given her. At fur ’clck in the afternn, she arrived at my classrm, exhausted but ready t wrk.
Hani lived in a tw-rm huse with her parents and tw brthers. When I met them at their huse, I realized they wuld never be able t affrd the expenses f a US university. Hani’s enthusiasm was increasing with her language ability, but I was becming mre and mre discuraged.
One day I received the annuncement f a schlarship pprtunity fr a majr US university. After reading the requirements, I knew Hani culdn’t meet the qualificatins. I tld her that there was nly a slim chance f her getting the schlarship and encuraged her t be mre “realistic” abut her dream. But she remained determined.
“Will yu send in my name?” she asked.
I culdn’t turn her dwn. I cmpleted the applicatin, with the painful truth abut her academic life, but als with my praise f her curage and perseverance.
In the weeks that fllwed, I arranged fr her t take the Test f English Fluency in Jakarta. The entire test wuld be an enrmus challenge fr smene wh had never tuched a cmputer befre. Fr tw weeks, we studied hw a cmputer wrks. Then, just befre Hani went t Jakarta, she received a letter frm the schlarship assciatin. She had been accepted.
I leaped arund the rm, verjyed and shcked. Hani std by, smiling. I realized that it was I wh had learned smething Hani had knwn frm the beginning: It is nt intelligence alne that brings success, but als the drive t succeed, the cmmitment t wrk hard and the curage t believe in yurself.

Shipping cntainers are gaining ppularity as an alternative t traditinal huses. These 20-r 40-ft cntainers can be btained fr as little as several hundred US dllars a piece, and it’s nt surprising that sme industry prfessinals and even city planners cnsider them the future f hme building. Belw are details f sme amazing hmes made ut f shipping cntainers.
Lndn Cntainer City (I and II)
Lndn’s Cntainer City first sprang up in the heart f the dcklands in 2001. It tk just five mnths t cmplete the riginal 12 wrk studis. Shrtly after that, a furth flr f studis and living apartments was built n tp f these. The first cntainer city was s successful that anther—Cntainer City II—was added t it.
    Ls Angeles Rednd Beach huse
With its mdern lines and appealing spaces, the award-winning Rednd Beach Huse is a luxury beachside shwpiece built frm eight recycled steel shipping cntainers, alng with sme traditinal building materials. Accrding t the architects, the mdified cntainers are “nearly indestructible”.
    Amsterdam Keetwnen
Amsterdam’s massive Keetwnen cmplex huses 1,000 students and it is the largest cntainer city in the wrld. The husing prject is a raring success and features units that are quiet and cmfrtable. Mexic M2ATK Cntainer Huse
M2ATK designed this unique cntainer huse fr an artist. It’s fully equipped with heating and cling, a kitchen and bathrm. On the bttm flr f the huse are “public spaces” such as the kitchen and living rm. The secnd flr are bedrms, and the tp flr is a studi space in which t wrk, read and “let fly the imaginatin”.

In the fg f uncertainty abut hw new technlgy will change the way we wrk, plicymakers arund the wrld say cnfidently that we will need t upskill the wrkfrce in rder t cpe. The view sunds reassuringly sensible: if cmputers are grwing smarter, humans will need t learn t use them r be replaced by them. But the truth is, the peple wh are being “upskilled” in tday’s ecnmy are the nes wh need it the least.
Research shws that wrkers with degrees are ver three times mre likely t participate in training as adults than wrkers with n qualificatins. That creates a virtuus circle fr thse wh did well at schl, and a vicius circle fr thse wh did nt. If the rbts are cming fr bth the accuntants and the taxi drivers, yu can bet it is thse wrking with mney that will be mre able t retrain themselves ut f danger, because the better educated tend t have mre cnfidence and mney t pay fr their wn training.
Emplyers als invest in these wrkers mre. In the UK, a surprising number f emplyers send their senir managers t business schls. It is n gd blaming emplyers fr directing investments at their highly-skilled wrkers. They are simply aiming fr the highest return they can get. And, fr sme types f lwer-paid wrk, it is nt always true that technlgical prgress requires mre skills. Smetimes, technlgy can de-skill a jb. Just lk at Uber drivers wh fllw the driving rutes set by their app, rather than expanding their wn knwledge f the streets. The UK’s latest Emplyment and Skills Survey suggests the use f literacy and numeracy skills at wrk has fallen since 2012, even as the use f cmputers has increased. Hwever, the truble is, when the cmputer makes yur jb easier ne day, it might make it redundant the next. Many f thse affected by autmatin will need t switch ccupatins, r even industries. But a retailer r warehuse cmpany is nt ging t retrain its staff t help them mve t a different sectr.
It is time t revisit lder ideas. The UK nce had a vibrant culture f night schls, fr adults t attend after their day jbs. A revival f it culd be exactly what the 21st century needs. Rather than just “upskilling” in a narrw way, peple culd chse t learn an entirely new skill r trade, r explre interests they never had a chance t nurture befre.
It is still nt clear whether the impact f new technlgy n the labur market will cme in a trickle r a fld. But in an already unequal wrld, cntinuing t reserve all the lifebats fr the better-ff wuld be a dangerus mistake.
43.Accrding t the writer, plicymakers’ belief in upskilling the wrkfrce __________.
A.is cntrary t ppular beliefB.is helpful in cping with new technlgy
C.is t difficult t put it int practiceD.is nt beneficial t thse wh need it mst
44.It can be inferred that wrkers withut qualificatins are less likely t __________.
A.have cnfidence in utperfrming thse with degrees at schl
B.persuade their emplyers t make an investment in them
C.minimize the risk f jb lss caused by new technlgy
D.assess hw new technlgy will change the way they wrk
45.The wrd “redundant” (Para. 3) prbably means __________.
    A.unnecessaryB.undesirableC.unskilledD.unrewarding
46.Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing cnclusin is True?
A.Wrkers’ literacy and numeracy skills shuld be enhanced withut delay.
B.Night schls can help t eliminate skill gaps amng wrkers.
C.Cmpanies shuld attach much imprtance t retraining f wrkers.
D.Thse lwer-skilled wrkers deserve giving mre chances f retraining.
    Sectin C
Directins: Cmplete the fllwing passage by using the sentences in the bx Each sentence can nly be used nce. Nte that there are tw sentences mre than yu need.
    Hw t Becme a Scientist
Here is sme advice fr students wh think they might like t becme scientists.
Becme an bserver. One f the mst imprtant things yu can d t becme a gd scientist is t practice watching everything carefully. Find a cmfrtable chair and put it in the middle f yur garden r a park. Sit in the chair fr thirty minutes r an hur. Watch the insects that fly past r land n the plants. Lk at the shapes f leaves and branches. Listen t the sunds f insects. 47 Use a micrscpe t lk clsely at interesting bjects.
Learn everything yu can abut a tpic that interests yu. Suppse yu’d like t explre flwers by using a micrscpe. G t the library and check ut sme flwer bks. See what yu can find n the Internet. Pick sme flwers and carefully take them apart. 48 The mre yu knw abut flwers frm reading abut them and bserving them, the mre yu’ll understand when yu lk at them with a micrscpe.
Ask fr help frm a knwledgeable persn. After yu’ve learned everything yu can n yur wn, ask smene else t help with questins yu still have. Maybe there’s smene at a nearby schl r museum wh knws abut insects, spiders, r smething else yu’d like t learn abut. 49
Find a scientist t talk t r find a place where scientific research is being dne. If yu still want t learn mre, yu can find a scientist t talk t at a nearby university, r research statin. 50 Explain what yu’re interested in. Ask if yu can schedule a time t visit. Mst scientists are happy t talk t students wh share their passin fr science.
A.Yu may g t seek answers frm him.
    B.Write a letter r an e-mail message t the scientist.
C.Research yur questins using the Internet r library.
D.See if yu can find a sight r sund that surprises yu.
E.Use a micrscpe t see hw everything fits tgether.
F.Being a scientist is time-cnsuming and mentally demanding.
    III.Summary Writing(共10分)
51.Directins: Read the fllwing three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
    Preventing Resistance
The develpment f drug-resistant pathgens (病原体) can be prevented in at least three ways. First, sufficiently high cncentratins f the drug can be maintained in a patient’s bdy fr a lng enugh time t kill all sensitive cells and hld thers lng enugh fr the bdy’s defenses t defeat them. Discntinuing a drug befre all f the pathgens have been neutralized prmtes the develpment f resistance. Fr this reasn, it is imprtant that patients finish their entire antimicrbial prescriptin (抗菌药物) and resist the temptatin t “save sme fr anther day.”
A secnd way t prevent resistance is t use antimicrbial agents in cmbinatin s that pathgens resistant t ne drug will be killed by the secnd, and vice versa. Additinally, ne drug smetimes enhances the effect f a secnd drug in a prcess called synergism. Enhanced effect can als result frm cmbining an antimicrbial drug and a chemical.
A third way t reduce the develpment f resistance is t limit the use f antimicrbials t necessary cases. Unfrtunately, many antimicrbial agents are used indiscriminately, in bth develped cuntries and in lessdevelped regins where many are available withut a physician’s prescriptin. In the United States, an estimated 50 percent f prescriptins fr antibacterial agents t treat sre thrats and 30 percent f prescriptins fr ear infectins, are inapprpriate because the diseases are viral in nature. Likewise, because antibacterial drugs have n effect n cld and flu viruses, 100 percent f antibacterial prescriptins fr treating diseases are unnecessary. As discussed previusly, the use f antimicrbial agents encurages the reprductin f resistant bacteria by limiting the grwth f sensitive cells; therefre, inapprpriate use f such drugs increases the likelihd that resistance f bacteria will multiply.
In rder t maintain the effectiveness f antimicrbial treatments, respnsible practices must be implemented.
