Grwn-ups are mre practical than children. They want t teach children knwledge that will be useful in the future.2. Grwn-ups are n better than children. … I have had a great many encunters with a great many peple wh have been cncerned with matters f cnsequence. And the grwn-up wuld be greatly pleased t have met such a sensible man.
Q1: What des the authr really mean by these sentences?
Mst f the adults I have met are the same. They fcus n practical matters nly and seldm pay attentin t imaginatin r creativity. If I pretend t think the way they d, the adults will cnclude that I am sensible and mature.
Q2: What figure f speech des the authr use? Hw des this figure f speech help t express the authr’s attitude?
Irny(讽刺,反语).This figure f speech enables the authr t indicate his lw pinin f adults’ behavir and values by stressing such things.
Learning t learn
Irny is a subtle figure f speech that refers t things ne says that are the ppsite f what ne really means. It has a humrus, emphatic r sarcastic effect. Fr example: Fine, dn’t buy me an airline ticket. I’ll just swim acrss the cean!
They thught the authr’s Drawing Number One was just abut an rdinary hat. When seeing the authr’s Drawing Number Tw, they advised the authr t change his fcus t ther subjects such as gegraphy, histry, arithmetic and grammar. Because they lack imaginatin and patience and just fcus n the cnsequences f matters.
Think and share
1. What were the grwn-ups’ respnses t the authr’s Drawing Number One and Drawing Number Tw? Why d yu think they respnded in this way?
Imaginatin and genuineness.
Accrding t the authr, what is a child’s mst valuable trait?
After reading the tw passages in this unit, I have learnt a lt. Being a child r an adult may have its wn advantages and disadvantages. As far as I am cncerned, being a child is much happier because I dn’t take a lt f respnsibilities, and I must be taken gd care f by my parents, althugh I have t be supervised by them as well. Being an adult means
3. After reading the tw passages in this unit, what can yu acquire and lse as yu grw up?
I will be allwed t d a lt f things that I can’t when I was a child, while I must be mature and strng enugh t take respnsibilities.Abve all, I can acquire a lt; meanwhile, I may als lse smething precius as I grw up. S I hpe I will keep a childlike inncence deep in my heart.
1. Decide whether yu agree with the authr’s attitude twards grwn-ups and why. 2. Think f sme examples and make ntes. 3. Organise yur talk fllwing the steps belw. • Explain the authr’s attitude twards grwn-ups. • State yur wn pinins. • Give supprting examples. • Cnclude by summarising yur pinins.
Wrk in grups. Give a talk abut yur attitude twards grwn-ups.

Useful expressins:
4. Give yur talk t the class.

If yu tame me, then we shall need each ther. T me, yu will be unique in all the wrld. T yu, I shall be unique in all the wrld.

sleep thrugh 意为 t sleep fr a lng time withut waking up。 e.g. The baby slept peacefully thrugh the night.
2. The grwn-ups’ respnse, this time, was t advise me t my drawings f ba cnstrictrs, ___________________________________ , and devte myself instead t gegraphy, histry, arithmetic and grammar. (Line 1, Para 7)
Paraphrase: This time, the adults advised me t stp my strange thughts and paintings. In their pinin, I shuld pay mre attentin t useful subjects such as gegraphy, histry, arithmetic and grammar.
e.g. Jane had laid aside her bk t watch what was happening.
whether frm the inside r the utside e.g. Yes, indeed, I intend t g. Yu may, if yu please, cme and jin us in the game.

a great many

a great many = a large number f / many / lts f / plenty f, e.g. He’s been t a great many places.
5. I wuld bring myself dwn t his level. I wuld talk t him abut bridge, and glf, and plitics, and neckties. And the grwn-up wuld be greatly pleased t have met such a sensible man. (Line 3, Para 12)
Paraphrase: I wuld lwer myself t the same level as the adult and talk t them abut the things they are interested in. Then they wuld be satisfied and pleased t meet such a smart persn as me.
e.g. It must be delightful t find neself in a freign cuntry withut a penny in ne’s pcket.
