Dgs are ur best friends. That’s especially true after a disaster, such as an earthquake. When buildings fall dwn,search-and-rescue dgs help find trapped peple. Dgs’amazing nses can pick up the smell f survivrs. Nw scientists have develped electrnic tl that des the same thing. It’s taking smell detectin(探测)t a whle new level.
The new inventin is a srt f electrnic nse, which can detect extremely lw levels f many cmpunds(化合物)frm peple’s skin. This isn’t the first time engineers have develped such an bject. Earlier mdels, hwever, have been bulky and expensive. They culd nt detect lw levels f target cmpunds either. The new ne is inexpensive and small enugh t fit inside hand-held equipment.
The electrnic nse can detect extremely slight smell f mre than ne cmpund at the same time.“Being able t d this,in such a small bject,is the significant discvery,”says Stiris E. Pratsinis,Prfessr f Prcess Engineering and Materials Science at the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy in Zurich. His team tested it in special spaces. They were like the small spaces where peple might be trapped. Chemicals given ff by the vlunteers built up inside. The electrnic equipment detected thse cmpunds at unbelievably lw levels.
The results were gd news fr the research team. But they may be nt fr ur fur-legged friends,wh culd sn be ut f a jb.“Ideally, this technlgy culd replace search-and-rescue dgs,”Pratsinis says.
Stephen Taylr, an electrical engineer, agrees that the new technlgy has sme benefits ver dgs. Still, he thinks it may be t sn t have ur trusty friends retire. He suspects,“I fresee that such an bject culd add t the fine wrk dne by the dgs.” Taylr als pints ut sme ptential limitatins f the new inventin.“E-nses are useful, but can be very likely t be affected by unstable readings and interruptin,”he says.
    1. Why des the authr talk abut dgs at the beginning?
    A. T catch the readers’ attentin.
    B. T intrduce the tpic abut e-nses.
    C. T shw what search-and-rescue dgs d.

Plastic—a widely-used material—has in many ways been a benefit t humans but it has als caused a grwing prblem. Tday, plastics are the N.1 type f garbage fund in the sea. Ocean Cnservancy,a nn-prfit envirnmental advcacy grup that rganises an annual castal cleanup event wrldwide, said plastic waste makes up arund 85 per cent f the garbage cllected frm beaches and ceans.
Oceans Cnservancy says plastics are believed t threaten(威胁)at least 600 different wildlife species(物种). 3 ;a grwing bdy f evidence suggests humans are cnsuming plastics thrugh the seafd we eat. Research suggests sme plastics culd be pisnus t humans, and culd ptentially increase the risk f health prblems.
4 . At the Ecnmist Wrld Ocean Summit this week, ten natins annunced t reduce plastic sea litter as part f UN Envirnment’s Clean Seas campaign. 5 . Crpratins als have a rle, as d individuals.
Earlier mdels,hwever,have been bulky and expensive…The new ne is inexpensive and small enugh t fit inside hand-held equipment.
根据最后一段中的“I fresee that such an bject culd add t the fine wrk dne by the dgs.”

Nw imagine it cvered ankle-deep in plastic waste-a ttal f abut 19 billin punds f garbage.
    3. B 根据后文 a grwing bdy f evidence suggests humans are cnsuming plastics thrugh the seafd we eat可知,越来越多的证据显示人类通过食用海产品也摄入了塑料,B选项 “不仅野生生物受到威胁”切题,故选B项。
Crpratins als have a rle,as d individuals.
Research suggests sme plastics culd be pisnus t humans, and culd ptentially increase the risk f health prblems.
