    本单元的主题是“探讨冒险精神”,该阅读文本属于日记题裁,以第一人称叙述。阅读文本分为两个部分,第一部分是背景知识介绍,另一部分是以“坚忍号”服务员珀西布莱克博罗的口吻写下的三篇日记。从沙克尔顿带领“坚忍号”船员于伦敦启程到他们克服种种困难回到英国。三篇日记的时间跨度大,但是基本勾勒出了这次南极探险的故事脉络。

    At the end f this class, students will be able t:
    1. summarize the develpment f Shackletn's Antarctic expeditin;
    2. explre the spirit f adventure and learn hw t vercme adversity frm utstanding explrers;
    3. infer character traits and emtins;
    4. guess the meaning f phrases accrding t the cntext.

    Step1 Lead-in
    Enjy a shrt vide named The Endurance. Then, students will knw the backgrund infrmatin f this unit and be inspired fr the subsequent reading.

    Justificatin: aruse students’ interest and elicit the tpic
    Step2 Predictin
    Students skim the title and pictures t predict the cntent.
    Q1. What d yu expect t read frm the text?

    Q4. What is the language features f diary entries?
    Justificatin: prepare fr reading
    Step3 Skimming and scanning
    After predictin, they are asked t skim the text quickly t match the main f each part and find the basic infrmatin abut the expeditin. Finally, students cnclude the main idea f this passage.
    Justificatin: t train students’ ability t summarize the main idea.
    Step4. Detailed reading
    Students read three diary entries carefully and grasp the keywrds t answer the fllwing questins. The mst imprtant thing is t explre and infer character traits and emtins.
    Q1. Hw did Blackbrw cme t jin the expeditin?
    Q2. Why did Shackletn thrw away all his gld?
    Q3. Why did he allw Hussey t keep his banj?
    Q4. What did Shackletn d t make sure all crew members culd survive?
    Q5. What did the crew members have t d t make sure they culd survive?
    Q6. Hw did Blackbrw’s feelings change during the expeditin?
    The students discuss the persnal qualities f Shackletn and ther explrers with their grup members.
    What persnal qualities did Shackletn, Wild, and Blackbrw, Thmas Orde-Lees exhibit? Find examples frm the text t supprt yur answers.
    Justificatin: Practice reading a passage fr details and language features. Help students t fully understand the text t supprt Step 5.
    Step 5. Further thinking
    After reading the whle passage, the teacher asks the students t discuss the fllwing questins with their partners:
    Q1. What des A Successful Failure mean? Or what des the success/ failure mean in the title?
    Q2. D yu think it is a gd title? Why (nt)?
    Q3. What d yu think wuld happen next?
    Justificatin: fster students’ critical thinking.
    Ⅳ. Hmewrk
    Try t write diary 4 after Blackbrw were rescued and survived.
