The Oxfrd English Dictinary (OED) is asking the public t help it add new wrds. Editrs want t find the reginal (地区的) differences in English arund the wrld. They want t increase its recrd f the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radi and the Frward Arts Fundatin teamed up t find lcal wrds in the United Kingdm. It resulted in mre than 100 reginal wrds and phrases being added t the dictinary. One was“cuddy wifter”, which means“a left-handed persn”.
Nw, the OED is widening its search t English speakers arund the wrld. Eleanr Maier, an editr at OED, said the reactin has been great. Editrs are listing a number f suggestins t include in the dictinary. These include Hawaii's“hammajang”, which means“in a disrderly state”. Anther is the wrd fr a swimsuit, “dckers” r“duckers”. It is used in Sctland.
The OED als might include the wrd“frg-drwner”, which Americans might use t describe a dwnpur f rain. Anther pssibility is“brick”. It means“very cld” used by peple in New Jersey and New Yrk City.

New research suggests that dgs might be able t help save diseased citrus trees.
A grup f scientists trained dgs t use their sense f smell t detect a crp disease called citrus-greening. The disease has affected range, lemn and grapefruit trees in the American states f Flrida, Califrnia and Texas.
The dgs can detect the disease weeks t years befre it appears n tree leaves and rts. the researchers reprt. A study n their findings was published recently in the Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences. The reprt says using dgs is als faster, less cstly and mre exact than having peple cllect hundreds f leaves fr lab analysis.
Timthy Gttwald is a researcher with the U. S. Department f Agriculture and a c- writer f the study. He tld The Assciated Press, “This technlgy is thusands f years ld— the dg's nse. We' ve just trained dgs t hunt new prey.”
Citrus-greening is caused by a bacteria(细菌) that is spread by a tiny insect that feeds n the leaves and stems f citrus trees. Once a tree is infected(感染), there is n cure. The disease has als hurt citrus crps in Central and Suth America and Asia. In ne experiment invlving grapefruit trees in Texas, trained dgs were crrect 95 percent f the time in telling the difference between newly infected trees and healthy nes. “The earlier yu detect a disease, the better chance yu have at stpping an epidemic(流行病) by remving infected trees,” Gttwald said.
Matte Garbeltt studies plants at the University f Califrnia, Berkeley. He says the new research shws that dgs can detect an infectin well befre current methds. Garbeltt has been invlved in similar research but had n part in the new study.
Laura Sims is a plant scientist with Luisiana Tech University. She praised the steps taken t find ut if the dgs were detecting the bacteria itself r a plant's reactin t an infectin. T d that, the researchers infected different kinds f unrelated plants with the bacteria in a labratry. The dgs were still able t pick ut the infected plants.
