We knw that fruits can help t keep ur bdies healthy. Accrding t a new study, eating fruits in middle age culd als help t reduce the chances f develping depressin (抑郁) later in life thugh we shuld pay attentin t the amunt f fruits we eat.
Researchers frm China and Singapre wanted t find ut mre abut whether eating fruits and vegetables culd have an effect n ur mental health. They lked at mre than13,700 Chinese adults wh were living in Singapre. The study perid began between 1993 and 1998 when the Chinese adults were aged between 45 and 74. Everyne was asked abut the fruits and vegetables they liked t eat. 14 fruits and 25 types f vegetables were included in the questinnaire (问卷).
The Chinese adults were fllwed fr an average f almst 20 years. By this time, they were aged between 61 and 96. They were asked t cmplete a questinnaire that culd decide whether lder peple develp depressin. At the end f the study perid, almst 3,200 peple had the feeling f depressin.
The researchers fund that higher cnsumptin f fruits during middle age was cnnected with a lwer prbability f develping depressin in late life. Thse wh ate the mst fruits were 29% less likely t develp depressin cmpared t thse wh ate the least. Hwever, they didn’t find any cnnectin between eating vegetables and develping depressin.
It was suggested that the reasn fr this may be that fruits are usually eaten raw, while vegetables are ften cked. Cking vegetables might limit the “prtective effects” f the nutrients (营养物) in the fds, the researchers suggested, althugh they said mre research was needed.

Bumblebees are already knwn t suffer frm climate change. S, a researcher frm the University f Würzburg in Germany and her team wanted t understand if heat waves culd influence bumblebees’ ability t smell flwers.
The researchers put arund 190 bumblebees frm tw cmmn species int small special rms fr almst three hurs at temperatures f 40℃ t simulate (模拟) heat waves. Sme bumblebees were als put in a dry envirnment; sme had ways t sugary resurces; sme were given time t recver at nrmal temperatures fr 24 hurs after the heat treatment. After the simulated heat waves, the researchers cut ff the bumblebees’ antennae (触须), which they use t smell, and measured whether the lfactry sensry neurns (the cells that help them smell) in the antennae culd still detect flwer scents.
The heat waves reduced the bumblebees’ ability t smell by up t 80 percent. Wrker bumblebees, which are all female, were mre affected than male bumblebees. Even wrse, the antennae f the bumblebees that had 24 hurs t cl ff still didn’t recver their sense f smell after that time. “That was surprising,” said the researcher.
