When a Swedish ship that sank in 1628 was recvered frm the prt f Stckhlm, histrians and scientists were verjyed with the chance t examine the remains f the past. Underwater archaelgy-the study f ships, aircraft and human settlements that have sunk under large bdies f water-is really a prduct f the last 50 years. The rapid grwth f this new area f study has ccurred because f the inventin f better diving equipment .Besides the Swedish ship wreck(残骸),underwater archaelgists have made mre exciting discveries such as the 5000-year-ld bats in the Mediterranean Sea.
Underwater archaelgy can prvide facts abut the past. In ancient prts all ver the wrld are ships sunken in the past 6,000 years. There are als sunken settlements in seas and lakes telling f peple’s way f life and their systems f trade in ancient times. Underwater archaelgists want t study these bjects t add t the wrld's knwledge f histry, but they have t fight tw enemies. One enemy is treasure hunters wh dive fr ancient artifacts that they can sell t cllectrs. Once sld, these bjects are lst t experts. The secnd enemy is dredging machines(挖掘机)ften used t repair prts. Why I Dn’t Spare “Spare Change”
“Pr but hnest.” “The deserving (值得帮助的) pr.” These wrds always cme t my mind when I think f “the pr.” But I als think f peple wh, perhaps thrugh alchl (酒) r drugs, have ruined nt nly their wn lives but als the lives f thers in rder t give way t their wn pleasure. Perhaps alchlism and drug addictin (上瘾) really are “diseases,” as many peple say, but my wn feeling --- based. Of curse, nt n any serius study --- is that mst alchlics and drug addicts belng t the “undeserving pr.” And that is largely why I dn’t give spare change t beggars.
But surely amng the street peple there are als sme wh can rightly be called “deserving.” Deserving what? My spare change? Or simply the gvernment’s assistance? It happens that I have been brught up t believe that it is prper t make cntributins t charity (慈善机构), but if I give sme change t a beggar, am I making a cntributin t charity and thereby helping smene, r, am I perhaps simply encuraging smene nt t get help? Or, maybe even wrse, am I supprting a cheat?
If ne believes in the value f private charity, ne can either give t needy peple r t charitable rganizatins. In giving t a beggar ne may indeed be helping a persn wh badly needs help, but ne cannt be certain that ne is giving t a needy persn. In giving t an rganizatin, n the ther hand, ne can feel that ne’s mney is likely t be used wisely. True, facing a beggar ne may feel that this particular unfrtunate persn needs help at this mment --- a cup f cffee r a sandwich --- and the need will nt be met unless I put my hand in my pcket right nw. But I have cme t think that the beggars whm I meet can get alng withut my spare change, and indeed perhaps they are actually better ff fr nt having mney t buy alchl r drugs.
I knw nthing abut these beggars, but it’s my impressin that they simply prefer begging t wrking. I am nt generalizing abut street peple. I am talking abut the abut whm I actually meet. That’s why I d nt give “spare change,” and I dn’t think I will in the future.
64. What des the authr think f beggars wh take drugs?
A. They shuld be given a check-up.
B. They really need mney t live.

D. They are nt wrth helping.

D
While parents, particularly mthers, have always been attached t their infants (婴儿), scietal cnditins frequently made this attachment difficult t maintain (保持). First f all, the high infant death rate in the premdern times meant that such attachments ften ended in hpelessness. Perhaps t prevent the sadness that infant death caused, a number f scietal practices develped which wrked against early attachment f mther and child.
One f these premdern attachment-discuraging practices was t leave infants unnamed until they had survived int the secnd year. Anther practice that discuraged maternal (母亲的) attachment was tightly wrapping (包裹) infants. Wrapping effectively prevented the clse physical interactins like strking (抚摸) and kissing that are s much a part f mdern mthers’ and fathers’ affectin fr their infants.
A third practice which had the same distancing effect was wet-nursing. Breast-feeding (母乳哺育) was nt ppular amng the well-t-d in the early mdern times; infants were ften fed by wet nurses hired fr the purpse. In sme places, such as nineteenth-century France, city infants were sent t wet nurses in the cuntry. A study published in September suggests there is a surprising way t get peple t avid unhealthy fds: change their memries. Scientist Elizabeth Lftus f the University f Califrnia at Irvine asked vlunteers t answer sme questins n their persnalities (个性) and fd experiences. “One week later,” Lftus says, “we tld thse peple we’d fed their answers int ur smart cmputer and it came up with an accunt f their early childhd experiences.” Sme accunts included ne key additinal detail (细节). “Yu gt sick after eating strawberry ice-cream.” The researchers then changed this detail int a manufactured (人为促成的) memry thrugh leading questins --- Wh were yu with? Hw did yu feel? By the end f the study, up t 41% f thse given a false memry believed strawberry ice-cream nce made them sick, and many said they’d avid eating it.
When Lftus published her findings, she started getting calls frm peple begging her t make them remember hating chclate r French fries. Unfrtunately, it’s nt that easy. False memries appear t wrk nly fr fds yu dn’t eat n a regular basis. But mst imprtant, it is likely that false memries can be implanted (灌输) nly in peple wh are unaware f the mental cntrl. And lying t a patient is immral, even if a dctr believes it’s fr the patient’s benefit.
Lftus says there’s nthing t stp parents frm trying it with their verweight children. “I say, wake up --- parents have been lying abut Father Christmas fr years, and nbdy seems t mind. If they can prevent diseases caused by fatness and all the ther prblems that cme with that, yu might think that’s mre mral lie. Decide that fr yurself.”
72. Why did Lftus ask the vlunteers t answer sme questins?

B. T find ut their attitudes twards fd.
C. T find ut details she can make use f.
D. T predict what fd they’ll like in the future.
