Last Saturday, Lai Chi-wai used a rope system to pull himself up 250 meters along the side of a skyscraper in Hong Kong. Mr. Lai, who can't move his legs, was strapped into his wheelchair as he climbed.
Before 2011, Mr. Lai was a world-famous rock climber. He also taught others how to climb. That ended 10 years ago, when Mr. Lai was involved in a car crash. The accident left him paralyzed (瘫痪) from the waist down, unable to move his legs. Since then, he's needed to use a wheelchair to get around.
But Mr. Lai couldn't get over his love of climbing. He figured out a way to attach his wheelchair to a roping system that allowed him to climb again. In 2016, Mr. Lai climbed Lion Rock in Kowloon, Hong Kong. It's a 495-meter climb that he had done many times before. Climbing Lion Rock again made him realize that he could still climb successfully, even if he couldn't do it in the same way he had in the past.
Last Saturday, Mr Lai started to climb Hong Kong's Nina Tower. The morning started off well enough. But by early afternoon, strong winds had come up. They blew Mr. Lai around and tangled (使缠结) his ropes. Finally, after he climbed for 10 hours and reached a height of 250 meters, the winds became too rough, and Mr. Lai had to give up his goal of reaching the top. But along the way, he set a new record. He also raised over $700, 000 for a charity that is working to help others who have been paralyzed.
Mr. Lai said that often, disabled people are viewed as weak. He hoped his climb would send a different message. “If a disabled person can shine,” he said, they can at the same time bring about opportunity, hope and light; they don't have to be viewed as weak.”
    24. What made Lai Chi-wai paralyzed?
    A. A failed operation.
    B. A car accident.
    C. An improper climbing training.
    D. A faulty rope system.
    25. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
    A. Mr. Lai is expert at climbing.
    B. Mr. Lai has a gift for climbing.
    C. Mr. Lai restarted climbing.
    D. Mr. Lai climbed Lion Rock.
    26. What do we know about Mr. Lai's last Saturday's climbing?
    A. It was a real challenge.
    B. It made him famous.
    C. He was supported by charity.
    D. He wasn't well prepared.
    27. How does Mr. Lai regard the disabled people?
    A. They are normal. B. They are losers.
    C. They are pitiful. D. They are hopeful.
    C
In WALL-E, a science fiction movie, a little robot is responsible for cleaning a world covered in garbage; a world where there is no longer room for anything else, not even humans! The film encourages common people, worldwide leaders and businessmen to ask the obvious question: What can be done to prevent something like this happening? For some, microfactories could become the most promising answer.
Veena Sahajwalla, a materials scientist and engineer in Sydney, Australia, has discovered a solution to the challenging waste problem. Her one-stop approach could go beyond the existing recycling processes. Her invention, waste microfactories, mainly targets electronic waste and plastic. It can transform waste into new materials with the help of thermal (热工) technology.
“Using our green manufacturing (制造) technologies, these microfactories can transform waste where it is largely reserved and created, enabling local businesses and communities to not only deal with local waste problems, but to develop a commercial opportunity from the valuable materials that are created, she explains.
And the way these modular (模块化) microfactories work is fascinating too. Firstly, no more than 50 square meters are needed to operate them, so they can be located anywhere, reducing journeys between manufacturing plants and recycling processors.
In the first module, the thrown-away computers, mobile phones and printers are broken down. Next, in another module, a special robot is responsible for identifying useful parts. Once this process is completed, a third stage involves transforming those pieces into valuable materials using controlled heat.
Although the most effective solution to address the waste challenges would be not to create as much trash, Sahajwalla microfactories provide hope for all the waste that already exists. Her solution not only decreases the amount of waste, but it also improves its management and enables new manufacturing opportunities around the new materials created.
    28. Why is WALL-E mentioned?
    A. To introduce the main topic.
    B. To advertise the science fiction movie.
    C. To show the strength of technology.
    D. To promote the convenience of robots.
    29. What do Veena Sahajwalla's words suggest?
    A. The technology is an inspiration from a movie.
    B. The technology deals with waste in small quantities.
    C. The technology benefits both the environment and investors.
    D. The technology is mainly of commercial value.
    30. Why is controlled heat used in the process?
    A. To break down thrown-away electronics.
    B. To transform electronic waste into valuable materials.
    C. To identify useful parts in the thrown-away electronics.
    D. To reduce journeys between manufacturing plants and recycling processors.
    31. What's the author's attitude to Sahajwalla's microfactories?
    A. Disapproving. B. Skeptical.
    C. Supportive. D. Objective.
    D
When kids sit down to eat lunch at school, fruits and vegetables may not be their first choice. But with more time at the lunch table, they are more likely to pick up those healthy foods. If we want to improve children's nutrition and health, ensuring longer school lunch breaks can help achieve those goals, according to research from the University of Illinois.
“Ten minutes of seated lunch time or less is quite common. Scheduled lunch time may be longer, but students have to wait in line to get their food. This means the amount of time children actually have to eat their meals is much less than the scheduled time,” says Melissa Pflugh Prescott, assistant professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. “During shorter lunch periods, children ate significantly less of the fruit and vegetable parts of their meal, while there was no significant difference in the amount of entrees (主食) they consumed. It makes sense that you might eat the part of the meal you look forward to first, and if there's enough time left you might go towards the other parts. But if there's not enough time, fruit and vegetables are likely to suffer,” Prescott explains.
“Our findings support policies that require at least 20 minutes of seated lunch time at school,” she states. School lunch time policies can be decided at the district level, with some room for individual schools to set their own standards; for example, schools can institute a longer lunch time than the district mandates (授权).
Prescott notes that longer lunch time can also have beneficial effects for children beyond healthy eating. “The amount of seated time children have is also a really valuable time for them to connect with their friends; they might have limited opportunities to do so throughout the school day. We found significantly fewer social interactions during the 10-minute lunch time. That indicates other positive outcomes may come from longer lunch breaks as well,” she concludes.
    32. Why do students eat less of the fruit and vegetables according to Prescott?
    A. They are unwilling to wait in line.
    B. There is not enough time for them.
    C. They're not used to a balanced diet.
    D. There is too much study pressure on them.
    33. What does the underlined word “institute” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Set up.
    B. Put off.
    C. Make use of.
    D. Run out of.
    34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
    A. Key reasons for a longer lunch time.
    B. The importance of a healthy diet.
    C. Other benefits of a longer lunch time.
    D. The detailed lunch time arrangements.
    35. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Eating lunch at school makes children healthier
    B. Longer school lunch time enables children to learn better
    C. Kids at school spend much time waiting in line for lunch
    D. Longer lunch time helps kids eat more fruit and vegetables

    Dear Jonah.
How are you? I'm writing to share my favorite book with you.
My favorite book is titled How to Improve English Writings, which is actually a birthday gift from my sister. Though only a 126-page book, it contains many well-written English compositions and practical skills to improve my English writing.
Last term I did poorly in an important English test, which of course made me upset. Seeing that I got a very low score in the writing part, my sister sent me this book and encouraged me to improve my writing. From then on I spent more time on writing. Thanks to the book, I have made great progress in writing. I love this book.
    Best wishes!

    37.F根据第三段中的“It's your holiday!”
39.G根据第五段中的“Even 15 minutes can help you feel relaxed and centered.”
40.E 根据第六段中的“And then spend some time talking about your holiday traditions”可知,给他们发个短信看看他们什么时候有空。
    47.A根据最后一段中的“It may seem tiny but...”
51.D根据上下文语境和最后一句话中的“It may seem tiny but you will be amazed at how far”可知,作者对如此遥远闪烁亮光的童火虫们感到吃惊,并吃惊于它们对即将到来的暴雨丝毫没有受到打扰。

    Text 1
W: Hi, Bob. Could you help me carry the big box to the school gate?
M: I'd love to, but I have to attend an important meeting first. There is only five minutes left.
    Text 2
W: Excuse me, I have booked Flight 645 to London which leaves at 8:45. And the check-in time isn't until 7:35.
Would it be possible to check my bags in a little earlier?
M: Sony, madam. I'm afraid you have to wait until 7:35.
    Text 3
W: What do you want for supper? I was thinking about pizza.
M: I had pizza yesterday. How about steak?
W: I'm trying to control my weight. Let's order salad from Lenny's.
    M: Sounds good!
    Text 4
M: Let's have dinner together sometime this week. I was actually thinking about the weekend.
W: But I'll be out of town this weekend. What about this Wednesday or Thursday?
    M: OK.
    Text 5
W: We are forming a swimming group. Do you want to join us?
M: I'd love to. But how often do you meet?
W: We intend to get together once a week, on Tuesday evening in the gym.
    Text 6
W: Are you still playing football with us on Saturday?
M: Yeah, I bought a new helmet and everything.
W: Helmet? You don't need a helmet to play football, just a couple of nets and a ball.
M: Oh, I feel stupid. I thought you meant American football.
W: That's OK. You're still going to play with us, right? Maybe you can exchange it for some new soccer shoes.
    M: That's a good idea.
    Text 7
M: Wow! The show was so good!
W: Yeah! And the show pointed out the importance of protecting sea environments.
M: Many sea animals are now in danger.
W: I know! In many places, sea animals have been harmed by plastic waste, some of which come from tourists.
M: No wonder more and more places have begun to ban plastic bags and straws.
W: Many chain stores no longer offer plastic bags, or even plastic straws!
M: Even if I am offered a plastic bag or straw, I won't take it! I now use my own water bottle, bags, and straws.
W: I also use my own lunch box.
    M: Good for you!
W: And good for the environment too!
    Text 8
M: Hi, Olivia! Did you see my friend Helen? I am looking for her.
W: Hello, is she the short girl with dark straight hair?
M: No, that is Susan. She is thinner than Helen. Helen is tall with long brown hair. Do you know where she is? W: Oh, I just came across her at the comer of the street. She was in a hurry to the classroom. She is going to be late for class.
M: She left her project work at my home and she has to use it in today's class! She is such a careless person, I have to give this work to her.
W: Oh, that is Helen's behavior. She is always annoying because of those mistakes she makes.
M: Well, maybe. Anyway, I should catch her up. Bye.
    W: See you.
    Text 9
W: Hey, Alan. What did you do in Amsterdam? Did you see all the canals?
M: Yes, they were so beautiful. We also visited two huge art galleries. They had exhibitions of the old Dutch painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt.
W: Then what did you do after leaving Amsterdam?
M: I spent some time in Brussels with Rita and then I went to Munich.
W: I really want to go to Germany!
M: It's a very interesting place. Very historical. I visited one house in Munich that was 800 years old. The weather in Munich was warm so I was happy. I took so many photos of the city.
W: Did you spend a lot of money on hotels?
M: No, not really. In Munich, I stayed in a hotel for about 20 Euros a night.
W: Wow, that is cheap! Did you go to Italy, Alan?
M: Yes, after a few days in Munich, I caught the train south to Italy and stayed two days in Milan.
    Text 10
Today, I'd like to share with you a well-known cartoon Tom and Jerry. We'll go deep into it and talk about the “Tom and Jerry Influence”. We all know that Tom and Jerry is an American cartoon with lots of, ah, that's
161, famous short films. It centers on the fights between two main roles: Tom, a cat, and Jerry, a mouse. However, there're still things we don't know. The first Tom and Jerry cartoon was actually created in 1937, not in 1940. And the cat Tom was called Jasper at the very first, and the mouse Jerry was called Jinx once. Also, its first show was not on television, but was played in theaters on February 10, 1940. Now it has fans worldwide and is one of the most famous cartoons in American cinema. But why is Tom and Jerry so popular? Some reviewers say it spreads its influence to the world by its lively pictures, funny sounds, perfect timing and etc. However, from where I stand, the colorful roles of the story itself seem to be the most important factor.
