I grew up hearing that it is better t give than t receive, and the lder I get, the mre I aim t take this message t heart. Nevertheless, here I am, in the midst f the hliday seasn stressed ut abut gifts I have nt yet purchased.
Hw did gift buying becme an emtinally fraught chre (苦差事)? Fr a mment, it’s easy t questin if it’s wrth it. But science tells me that giving makes us feel gd.
“The act f giving actually des imprve yur happiness,” says Michael Nrtn, a psychlgist at Harvard Business Schl. He has published several studies n the effects f giving.
In ne experiment that included abut 700 peple, the researchers randmly assigned participants t make either a purchase fr themselves, r fr a stranger. Afterwards, the participants reprted hw happy they felt. Turns ut, giving t thers led t a significant happiness bst, whereas spending n neself didn’t mve the needle.
“If yu take $5 ut f yur pcket tday, the science really des shw that spending $5 n yurself desn’t d much fr yu,” Nrtn says. “But spending that $5 n smebdy else is mre likely t increase yur happiness.”
Take a scarf. If yu buy ne fr yurself, it’s just anther thing yu dn’t necessarily need. But if yu buy a scarf fr smene else, “yu’ve shwn them that they’re imprtant t yu,” Nrtn says. Either way, it’s just a scarf. “But it can either be a thrwaway bject r smething that enhances a relatinship between tw peple,” he says.
S, there’s evidence that genersity prmtes happiness, but the prcess f shpping, wrapping and schlepping (搬) gifts can be tiresme — r even extremely annying cnsidering all f ur day-t-day demands and ther hliday stressrs.
Studies als shw when peple are given smething they are mre likely t give back. Reciprcity (互惠) is a fundatin f gd relatinships and when we surrund urselves with generus peple, we tend t feel the same. Feeling that spirit f giving and the cnnectin it can bring is what the hlidays are all abut.

    C. T present a reasn.D. T clarify a cncept.
    25. Hw des Nrtn illustrate his pinin in paragraphs 5 and 6?
    A. By listing data.B. By giving examples.
    C. By making cmments.D. By telling persnal experiences.
    26. Why is preparing a gift smetimes an emtinally fraught chre?
    A. It’s difficult and expensive.B. It happens frequently.
    C. It’s nt valued by thers.D. It requires much effrt.
    27. What can we learn abut giving gifts frm the text?

The science f why insects gather arund lights at night has never been nailed dwn. Ppular theries prpse that mths and ther insects navigate (导航) by the mn and mistake lamps fr mnlight, r that the insects fly twards light t escape cming danger. Nw researchers believe they have a mre cnvincing answer: cntrary t current theries, insects are nt attracted t light frm far away, but becme trapped if they fly clse t an artificial light surce.
Accrding t Dr Sam Fabian, study c-authr and Imperial Cllege Lndn entmlgist, mths and many ther insects that fly at night evlved t tilt (倾斜) their backs t wherever is brightest. Fr hundreds f millins f years, this was the sky rather than the grund. The trick tld insects which way was up and ensured they flew level. But then came artificial lighting. Mths fund themselves tilting their backs t street lamps. This caused them t circle arund the lamps endlessly, the insects trapped by their evlutin.
Fabian and his clleagues filmed insect flight paths arund lights in the lab. The vides reveal that time and again, mths and dragnflies turned their backs t artificial lights, which appeared t greatly change their flight paths. If the light is abve them, they might start rbiting it, but if it’s behind them, they start tilting backwards and end up flying in circles r diving tward the grund.
Researchers have lng warned that light pllutin is a big driving frce in the dramatic decline in insect ppulatins. Mths and ther insects that becme trapped arund lamps becme easily caught by bats. The artificial lighting can als fl them int thinking it is daytime, causing them t bed dwn and skip a night’s feeding.
There are, Fabian believes, helpful lessns frm the research. “What this tells us is that the directin f artificial light matters. Culd we change lighting envirnments t nt trap insects? Fr we’re facing a massive decline in insects arund the wrld, and artificial light at night is ne f the factrs that culd ptentially be leading t this decline,” Fabian said.
    28. What d the underlined wrds “nailed dwn” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Ppularized widely.B. Discussed penly.
    C. Defined accurately.D. Explred academically.
    29. Fabian’s study fund that mths circle arund the lamps endlessly because ______.
A they can’t keep their balance.
    B. they use imprper flight attitude.
    C. they lse track f which way is up.
    D. they are attracted t lights frm far away.
    30. What is the significance f the research finding?
    A. It may lead t better cnservatin f insects.
    B. Natural enemies f insects will be gt rid f.
    C. Artificial lighting will be greatly reduced at night.
    D. It may raise cncerns fr insects’ eating behavir.
    31. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. Why insects lse their ability t fly at night.
    B. Why artificial light and evlutin trap insects.
    C. Hw artificial light impacts insect ppulatins.
    D. Hw insects evlved distinct strategies f flight.

The human vice is a delicate thing. Each persn’s distinctive vice is prduced when air frm the lungs causes the vcal crds (声带) t vibrate (震颤). These vcal crds can easily get damaged. Accrding t a 2005 study, 30% f the ppulatin will experience a vice disrder at sme pint in their life.
In a study published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins this week, a grup f biengineering researchers frm the University f Califrnia have put frward an attractive slutin. They have designed and tested a sft patch (小片) that can be stuck nt a persn’s neck, where it will pick up muscle mvements and, with the help f machine-learning algrithms (算法) that prcess the signals, translate them int speech.
When a persn lses their vice tday, the easiest fix is t turn t typing, texting, r writing ntes t cmmunicate. Typing can be slw and cnvenient, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead authr, and writing ntes is nly pssible in gd lighting. The new slutin wuld therefre be able t clear all these hurdles.
Dr. Chen’s device wrks based n smething called the magnetelastic effect. Essentially, when tiny magnetic (磁性的) bits are placed int sft materials, their magnetic prperties can change as the material is stretched.
When the thrat muscles mve under the sft patch, the resulting magnetelastic effects can be changed int electrical signals. In a test with eight participants, the variatins can be changed by electrical signals.
Researchers recrded the signals as the subjects spke and muthed five different sentences. They then trained a machine-learning mdel which was then able t predict which f the five sentences the participants spke-whether alud r in silence-with mre than 90% accuracy.
There is a way t g yet, fr nw the device can nly recgnize the five phrases it was trained n. Plus, t make it practical at scale, the researchers will need t cllect a lt mre data.
    32. In paragraph 1, the authr mainly wants t tell us that____.
    A. lungs are easily damaged
    B. the human vice is unique
    C. vcal crds vibrate t prduce sund
    D. vice disrders are a prblem wrthy f attentin
    33. Why des the authr mentin the bimetric effect?
    A. T explain the wrking principle.B. T present a slutin.
    C. T intrduce the challenge.D. T make a cmparisn.
    34. What is the functin f the sft patch?
    A. Predicting five different sentences.
B Destrying the backgrund magnetic field.
    C. Slwing the mvements f thrat muscles.
    D. Helping turn muscle mvements int electrical signals.
    35. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Predicting the Imprtance f Vice Restratin
    B. Using Algrithms in Biengineering Research
    C. Overcming Vice Lss with an innvative Patch
D Finding the Principle f Cmmunicatin Devices
