I’m a 66-year-ld harp (竖琴) student. Others in my class are 5,7,10,14…The next ldest is 30. I fancy myself the sage elder, hping that they see me as a surce f inspiratin —“Yu’re never t ld t learn.” r “If she can d it, I can, t!”
After 4 years f learning t play, it was time fr ur first in-persn harp perfrmance! Perfrmers sat amng the guests befrehand, chatting and drawing excitement and energy frm the full-f-anticipatin rm. One by ne, my fellw students went — each playing superbly. I was prud f them like they were my wn kids. Then, it was my turn. I was still relaxed and cnfident.
But I struggled frm the start. I kept my fingers mving n the strings, but the meldy (旋律) was all wrng. Luckily, the harp is a frgiving instrument. Even wrng ntes can sund meldic. But if anyne knew hw the sngs were suppsed t sund, they’d have knwn I was messing it up. Suddenly, glrius sunlight shne thrugh the cncert hall’s windws. Nw I culdn’t see! But the shw must g n, right?

The 8 minutes felt like 8 hurs.
Being the eldest in the rm ften makes peple assume yu’re the best r wisest. The truth, especially at that perfrmance, was far different. But I wuld have awarded myself a gld star fr the curage t start playing a new instrument at 62, and then perfrm in frnt f a large audience.
Making music knws n age. Thinking back n my first perfrmance, I realize that my lengthy life experience has taught me that the shw must g n n matter what wrrisme wrld plitics, health scares, uncertain ecnmic times, r difficult persnal relatinships are ccurring. In experiments invlving buncy balls, plastic bttles and a high-speed camera, researchers in Chile discvered that it’s pssible t cntrl the height f a cntainer’s bunce by swirling (旋动) the water inside.
If this experiment sunds like smething ut f a scial media challenge, that’s because it is. Pabl Gutiérrez, a physicist at Chile’s O’Higgins University, became interested in buncing cntainers after his sn shwed him the viral “bttle flip” challenge: thrwing a half-full plastic bttle s it flies end ver end and sticks the landing. “Pabl became very gd at this challenge,” laughs Gutiérrez’s c-authr Lenard Grdill, “He was thrwing a lt f bttles.”
S the physicists and their research team tk bttle flipping int the labratry. They glued halves f rubber balls t the bttle’s bttm t enhance their bunce. And they made a key bservatin: bttles they’d swirled befre releasing bunced far less, prbably thanks t fluid dynamics(流体力学). T test this, the physicists built a device that culd swirl and drp bttles with scientific precisin. Indeed, the faster the water was swirled, the lwer a bttle’s bunce.
Like car passengers during a tight turn, swirling water inside a bttle gets pushed t the sides f the cntainer, frcing it upward evenly alng the walls. When the bttle hits the grund, the water curses dwn tward a single pint at the center f the bttle’s base. All f the fluid tries t pass thrugh that pint but can’t. With nwhere else t g, the water flies back upward. Mst f the falling bttle’s mmentum (动量) gets redirected int this vertical jet (垂直喷射流) rather than int a bunce, lwering the impact and explaining why swirled bttles tend t stick their landings when “flipped”.
Tadd Trusctt, a fluid physicist in Saudi Arabia, says he’d be interested t see whether the effect wrks fr stickier fluids r fr larger cntainer sizes. Such findings culd perhaps be useful fr reducing crash damage t fluid-filled cntainers like fuel tanks. It culd als make fr an afternn f fun at hme. The researchers encurage readers t give a bttle a swirl and see the result fr themselves.
28. What did Pabl’s sn shw him?
A. Hw a cntainer’s bunce was cntrlled.
B. Hw plastic bttles were flipped in the air.
C. Hw bttles culd be thrwn as high as pssible.
D. Hw a half-filled water bttle made a gd landing.
29. What did the physicists d t carry ut the experiment?
A. They chse larger plastic cntainers.
B. They replaced water with sticky fluids.
C. They pured mre water int the bttles.
D. They stuck smething t the bttle’s bttm.
30. Hw is paragraph 4 develped?
A. By sharing a persnal experiment.B. By cmparing varieties f water bttles.
C. By describing a bunce-reducing prcess.D. By giving an example f a car’s tight turn.
31. What wuld Tadd like t see?
A. The publicatin f the findings.B. The great fun f bttle flipping.
C. The applicatin f the experiment.D. The imprvement f fluid-filled cntainers.

根据第四段中的“When the bttle hits the grund, the water curses dwn tward a single pint at the center f the bttle’s base. All f the fluid tries t pass thrugh that pint but can’t. With nwhere else t g, the water flies back upward. Mst f the falling bttle’s mmentum (动量) gets redirected int this vertical jet (垂直喷射流) rather than int a bunce, lwering the impact and explaining why swirled bttles tend t stick their landings when “flipped”.(当瓶子撞到地面时,水会流向瓶子底部中心的一个点。
根据尾段中的“Tadd Trusctt, a fluid physicist in Saudi Arabia, says he’d be interested t see whether the effect wrks fr stickier fluids r fr larger cntainer sizes. (沙特阿拉伯的流体物理学家Tadd Trusctt说,他很有兴趣看看这种效应是否适用于粘性较强的流体或更大的容器。)”可知,Tadd Trusctt说他有兴趣看看这种效应是否适用于粘性较强的流体或者更大的容器,由此可知,Tadd想看一下该实验的实际应用。故选C项。

I’m used t seeing small leaps in technlgical prgress, but ccasinally, there are things that will still shck me. In 2022, a cmpany called OpenAI released a truly jaw-drpping demnstratin f a new AI technlgy that feels almst like technlgy has skipped ahead by a few generatins.
The AI technlgy is called ChatGPT, a cmputer prgram that can understand and respnd t human language. It is trained n a lt f text, s it can understand what peple are saying and respnd in a way that sunds like a real persn. What’s even mre amazing is that ChatGPT seems frighteningly human in its ability t understand questins and answer them cmpetently. “Write a stry abut Lenard da Vinci in the style f Rald Dahl,” yu can ask it, and it’ll spin up a pretty gd children’s stry.
One area where I’ve fund ChatGPT t be enrmusly useful is its ability t write cmputer cde. This has particularly amazed me. When yu write cde, it has t be very precise and carefully structured. But when I asked it t write a prgram that wuld put sme data int a database fr me, in a particularly cmplex way, within secnds it generated smething that wuld have taken me hurs t d manually.
ChatGPT is nt really cmpletely human, hwever. Fr example, it smetimes generates things that sund true, but are actually just nnsense. This is because f the way the AI learns thrugh pattern recgnitin. There’s n real intelligence perating there — it is just repeating smething based n what it has “read” befre. ChatGPT is better at sme tasks than thers: it can write a brilliant invitatin email, but its ability t rhyme leaves a lt t be desired.
And this is why I’m pretty cnvinced that ChatGPT is ging t change the wrld, sner rather than later. It’s already hugely impressive, but what exists at the mment is just a demnstratin. Once the same AI is built int ther apps and can cnnect t the live internet t learn mre, it will becme even mre sphisticated Our cmputers will n lnger be just ur wrd prcessrs, but ur writing partners t.
32. What can we learn abut ChatGPT frm paragraph 2?
A. It can understand peple’s emtins.B. It reacts like a real persn during talks.
C. It is unable t generate riginal cntents.D. It frightens peple much in different ways.
33. What is particularly amazing abut ChatGPT’s ability t write a prgram?
A. Its diversity.B. Its efficiency.C. Its structure.D. Its precisin.
34. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
A. ChatGPT has sme limitatins.
B. There’s n real intelligence in the wrld.
C. ChatGPT learns thrugh pattern recgnitin.
D. AI thinks almst the same way as humans d.
35. What is the authr’s attitude tward ChatGPT?
A. Psitive.B. Oppsed.C. Dubtful.D. Unclear.

In cntrast, peple wh live a life f vluntary simplicity with few pssessins have a higher level.(许多幸福水平最高的国家,如几个拉丁美洲国家,物质财富水平相对较低。
根据上文“Certainly, mney can lead t greater well-being if yur basic needs aren’t satisfied r yu’re wrrying abut yur financial situatin.(当然,如果你的基本需求没有得到满足,或者你担心自己的财务状况,金钱可以带来更大的幸福感)”以及后文“I smetimes cmpare the materialist pursuit f happiness t eating when yu’re already full. Yu can eat as much as yu like, but it desn’t satisfy yu-in fact, it just makes yu feel uncmfrtable and sick.(我有时把追求幸福的物质主义者比作吃饱了再吃。你可以想吃多少就吃多少,但这并不能满足你——事实上,它只会让你感到不舒服和恶心)”可知,本句与上文构成转折,指出物质财富超出一定程度就无法满足对幸福的追求。故D选项“但是超过某一点,它就没有什么区别了”符合语境,故选D。
【39题详解】
根据上文“The idea that wealth brings well-being als stps us frm fcusing n the real surces f happiness, like cntact with nature, relatinships, and inner harmny. These are much mre reliable and prductive surces f well-being.(财富带来幸福的想法也阻止了我们关注幸福的真正来源,比如与自然的接触、人际关系和内心的和谐。这些都是更可靠、更有成效的幸福来源)”可知,本句承接上文,继续说明提供幸福感的东西的作用。故B选项“它们提供了一种稳定而真正的幸福感”符合语境,故选B。
【40题详解】
根据后文“Pssessins are prduced using natural resurces and create waste and pllutin. The desire t wn and build up pssessins is destrying ur eclgy. Sner r later, we will have t shift t a simpler lifestyle, whether we like it r nt.(财产是利用自然资源生产的,并造成浪费和污染。拥有和积累财产的欲望正在破坏我们的生态。不管我们喜欢与否,我们迟早都要转向一种更简单的生活方式)”可知,后文提到拥有和积累财产的欲望正在破坏我们的生态,说明不建议过分追求财产。故G选项“此外,为了保护环境,我们必须停止对财产的狂热”符合语境,故选G。
