All day I wuld find myself just lking ver at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I

Why D Peple Blink Their Eyes?
Peple blink(眨眼) their eyes tens f thusands f times every day. Scientists have lng believed blinking was
an invluntary mvement and served mainly t keep the eyeballs wet. But a new study suggests it has a mre
    imprtant purpse.
An internatinal team f scientists frm the University f Califrnia at Berkeley studied the blinking f human
eyelids. The jurnal Current Bilgy published their findings. The team said they fund that blinking “repsitins
ur eyeballs s we can stay fcused” n what we are seeing. They said that when we blink ur eyelids, the eyes rll
back int their sckets—the bny area that surrunds and prtects the eyes. Hwever, the researchers fund the
eyes dn’t always return t the same psitin. They said this causes the brain t tell the eye muscles t rerganize
    ur eyesight.
Gerrit Maus is the lead writer f the reprt. He serves as an assistant prfessr f psychlgy at Nanyang
Technlgical University in Singapre. Maus said, “Our eye muscles are quite sluggish(迟缓的) and imprecise, s
the brain needs t cnstantly adapt its mtr signals t make sure ur eyes are pinting where they’re suppsed t.
Our findings suggested that the brain measures the difference in what we see befre and after a blink, and
cmmands the eye muscles t make the needed crrectins.” The researchers said that withut such crrectins ur
surrundings wuld appear unclear and even jumpy. They said the mvement acts “like a Steadicam(摄影稳定器)
    f the mind.”
The researchers said they asked vlunteers t sit in a dark rm while staring at a small dt n a flat surface.
They used special cameras t fllw the vlunteer’s blinks and eye mvements. After each blink, the dt was
    第4页/共18页

mved ne centimeter t the right. The vlunteers did nt ntice this, but the brain did. It fllwed the mvement
and directed the eye muscles t refcus n the dt. After the dt was mved in this way 30 times, the vlunteers’
eyes changed their fcus t the place where they predicted it wuld be.
Prfessr Maus said, “Even thugh participants did nt cnsciusly register that the dt had mved, their
brains did, and adjusted with the crrective eye mvements. These findings add t ur understanding f hw the
brain cnstantly adapts t changes, cmmanding ur eye muscles t crrect fr errrs in ur bdies’ wn
    hardware.”
    27. Accrding t the new study, blinking eyes can ______.
    A. serve t keep the eyeballs wet
    B. repsitin eyeballs t stay fcused
    D. make ur eyes adapt t mtr signals
    C. cnsciusly crrect eye mvements
    28. Frm the experiment, we can learn that _____________.
    A. vlunteers culd see the mving dt with special cameras
    B. the eyeballs culd stay in the place as they were predicted
    C. participants were aware f the dt’s mvements t the right
    D. the brain cmmanded the eye muscles t refcus n the dt
    29. The underlined wrd “register” in Paragraph 5 prbably means ______.
    A. realize
    B. refcus
    C. reserve
    D. reasn
    30. This passage shws that ______.
    A. eye muscles are quite inactive and imprecise
    B. the research is f great value in the eye mvement
    C. the brain plays an imprtant rle in seeing things clearly
    D. vlunteers cntrl their blinks t fllw the changes f the dts
    D
We are encuntering real-wrld examples f hw AI can harm human relatins. As digital assistants such as
Alexa r Siri becme ppular, we are becming accustmed t talking t them as thugh they were alive; writing in
these pages last year, Judith Shulevitz described hw sme f us are starting t treat them as friends and therapists.
Shulevitz herself says she cnfesses things t Ggle Assistant that she wuldn’t tell her husband. If we grw mre
cmfrtable talking t ur devices abut ur secrets, what happens t ur human marriages and friendships?
Designers and prgrammers typically create devices whse respnses make us feel better—but may nt help us be
self-reflective r think ver painful truths. As AI ges deeper int ur lives, we must face the pssibility that it will
prevent ur emtins and deep human cnnects.
Besides, we will fight with sme ther challenges. The age f driverless cars, after all, is upn us. These vehicles
prmise t substantially reduce the exhaustin and distractin that put human drivers in danger, thus preventing
accidents. But what ther effects might they have n peple? Driving is a very mdern kind f scial interactin,
requiring high levels f cperatin. I wrry that driverless cars, by taking away frm us an ccasin t exercise this
ability, culd cntribute t its decline.
Nt nly will these vehicles be prgrammed t take ver driving duties and hence t remve frm humans the
pwer t make mral judgments (fr example, abut which pedestrian t hit when a crash is inevitable), they will
als affect humans with whm they’ve had n direct cntact. Fr instance, drivers wh have steered awhile alngside
an autnmus vehicle traveling at a steady, invariant speed might drive less attentively, thus increasing their
    第5页/共18页

likelihd f accidents nce they’ve mved t a part f the highway ccupied nly by human drivers. Alternatively,
experience may reveal that driving alngside autnmus vehicles travelling in perfect accrdance with traffic laws
    actually imprves human perfrmance.
Either way, we shuld be careful t launch new frms f AI withut first taking such scial spillvers—r
externalities, as they’re ften called—int accunt. We must apply the same effrt that we apply t the hardware and
sftware that make self-driving cars pssible t managing AI’s ptential effects n thse utside the car. After all, we
install brake lights n the back f yur car nt just, r even primarily, fr yur benefit, but fr the sake f the peple
    behind yu.
    31. What can be inferred abut human relatinships frm the first paragraph?
    A. We will feel cmfrtable speaking t thers nline.
    B. AI will lead t shallw inter-persnal relatinships.
    C. AI will enable peple t cmmunicate mre with thers.
    D. We will be mre self-reflective in interactin thanks t AI.
    32. In paragraph 2, the phrase “its decline” refers t the decline in ________.
    A. drivers’ interactin with the cars
    B. drivers’ exhaustin and distractin
    C. ur ability t cperate with thers while driving
    D. ur ability t deal with emergencies while driving
    33. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing statements is true f driverless cars?
    A. They may be better at making mre judgments than human drivers.
    B. They need t vary their speed t make cntact with human drivers.
    C. They may make human drivers in ther cars drive mre safely.
    D. They need t frce human drivers t cncentrate in the car.
    34. Which f the fllwing is the writer mst likely t agree with?
    A. Brake lights n the back f ur car are installed mainly t warn us f danger.
    B. We shuld figure ut hw new technlgy affects peple befre develping it.
    C. It is hard t say why scial spillvers will wrk in terms f self-driving cars.
    D. Mre effrt shuld be made t advance the hardware and sftware f driverless cars.

    选项。
My, what a big beak yu have!
Fr humans, adapting t climate change will mstly be a matter f technlgy. Mre air cnditining, better-
designed huses and bigger fld defenses may help t make the effects f a warmer wrld less harmful.
____35____ In a paper published in Trends & Evlutin, a team led by Sara Ryding, a PhD candidate at Deakin
University, shws that is already happening. Climate change is already altering the bdies f many animal species,
giving them bigger beaks (喙), legs and ears.
In sme species f Australian parrt, fr instance, beak size has increased by between 4% and 10% since 1871.
Anther study, this time in Nrth American dark-eyed juncs, anther bird, fund the same pattern. ____36____
    第6页/共18页

All that is perfectly cnsistent with evlutinary thery. “Allen’s rule”, named fr Jel Asaph Allen, wh
suggested it in 1877, hlds that warm-blded animals in ht places tend t have larger bdy parts than thse in
temperate (温带的) regins. ____37____ Being richly filled with bld vessels, and nt cvered by feathers, beaks
make an ideal place fr birds t get rid f heat. Fennec fxes, meanwhile, which are native t the Sahara Desert,
have strikingly large ears, especially cmpared with their Arctic cusins.
Ms. Ryding is nt the first researcher t take that apprach. But it is hard, when dealing with individual
species, t prve that climate change was the cause f an anatmical (解剖学的) changes. All srts f ther factrs,
frm changes in prey t the evlving reprductive preferences f males r females, might have been driving the
changes. ____38____ The team cmbined data frm different species in different places. Since they have little in
cmmn apart frm living n a warming planet, climate change is the mst reasnable explanatin.
____39____ That may change as warming accelerates. Since any evlutinary adaptatin cmes with trade-
ffs (妥协), it is unclear hw far the prcess might g. Bigger beaks might make feeding harder, fr instance.
Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cst mre energy t grw.
    A. Hwever, lking at the bigger picture makes the pattern clearer.
    B. Fr nw, at least, the increase is small, never much mre than 10%.
    C. Animals will have t rely n changing their bdies r their behavirs.
    D. It seems that the future wrld is ging t be htter than humans are used t.
    E. Therefre, the negative effects f a warmer wrld are visible in these animals’ bdies.
    F. Such adaptatins bst an animal’s surface area relative t its bdy, helping it t release extra heat.
    G. Similar trends are seen in mammals, with species f mice and bats evlving bigger ears, legs and wings.

Last year, I baked biscuits fr cmplete strangers t say “thank yu”. I’d had t call 999 because I fund my

plicemen thanked me fr delivering gifts.
I drve away feeling light and happy. Later, I realized that my natural high might have been mre than it
seemed.Research has shwn that sharing gratitude has psitive effects n health. Peple wh express gratitude will
increase their happiness levels, lwer their bld pressure and get better sleep.
What abut peple wh receive gratitude?Research has cnfirmed that when peple receive thanks, they
experience psitive emtins.“Thse are happy surprises,”says J-Ann Tsang, a prfessr f psychlgy. When
smene is thanked,he’s mre likely t return the favr r pass kindness n, and his chances f being helpful again
dubles, prbably because he enjys feeling scially valued.
The give-and-take f gratitude als deepens relatinships. Studies shw that when yur lved nes regularly

    第7页/共18页

Nwadays, hwever, many peple dn’t express gratitude. Our mdern lifestyle may be t blame. With
cmmercial and scial media, everything is speeding the yunger generatin t feel they’re the center f the wrld.
If it’s all abut them, why thank thers?
Why nt thank thers? Just take a lk at hw many psitive effects can saying “thank yu”have n persnal

    Asaph Allen
Being richly filled with bld vessels, and nt cvered by feathers, beaks make an
ideal place fr birds t get rid f heat. Fennec fxes, meanwhile, which are native t the Sahara Desert, have
strikingly large ears, especially cmpared with their Arctic cusins.( 喙拥有丰富的血管,没有绝缘羽毛覆盖,
    是鸟类散热的理想场所。又比如,与它们的北极近亲相比,原产于撒哈拉沙漠的芬内克狐狸有着惊人的大
