What is it called in different times?
在我国有一种传统的说法，认为毛笔是秦时蒙恬创造的，秦时使用兔毫竹管而有“笔”的名称。到了汉代，毛笔的制作进入了一个相对成熟的时期，当古埃及的芦管笔，欧洲的羽毛笔退出了历史的舞台时，中国的毛笔却至今不衰，显示出强大的生命力。

羽毛笔出现在公元600年左右，在大约公元700年时普及，当时，西方还没有发明出金属笔尖的沾水笔、钢笔和圆珠笔，羽毛笔成为了主要的书写工具。
笔的英文“PEN”，来源于拉丁文Penna或者Pinna，Penna就是羽毛的意思，这个词后来被古法语吸收，演变为Penne，也是羽毛的意思。古法语开始对英语产生深远的影响，在之后的某一时期开始英语就借用古法语penne，用pen一词来指代羽毛笔这类书写工具。
