根据第一段中“Despite their large bdies and lng lifespans, elephants are much less likely t die frm cancer than humans, with death rates f less than 5 percent. 故选A项。
根据第四段中“Cells keep dividing thrughut an rganism’s life, each carrying the risk f prducing a tumr. One f the bdy’s weapns is a gene called p53 knwn as the ‘guardian f the genme’, which hunts cells with faulty DNA. It encurages the cell t repair itself r self-destruct, keeping the cell frm cmbining with thers and prducing tumrs.
根据第四段中“One f the bdy’s weapns is a gene called p53 knwn as the ‘guardian f the genme’, which hunts cells with faulty DNA. 和划线词句前文“Humans have tw versins f p53 but elephants have 40, said the researchers. Bichemical analysis and cmputer simulatins als shwed that an elephant’s p53 genes are structurally slightly different, prviding a much larger anti-cancer tlkit. 可知,p53基因具有抗癌作用,人类有两种此类基因,而大象却有40种,从而推知划线词句“The researchers suspect that while faulty cells might be able t skirt tw p53 versins, they cannt cmbine with ther cells as easily in the face f dzens.
通读全文,结合第四段中“The findings, published last week in the jurnal Mlecular Bilgy and Evlutin, raise hpes that the cancer fighting genes in elephants culd be the key t tackling cancer, which kills abut 167, 000 Britns yearly. 和最后一段“The findings will pen the way fr research n hw p53 genes f elephants are activated and n medical treatment fr humans.(这一发现将为研究大象的p53基因如何被激活以及人类的医学治疗开辟道路。)”

We’d traveled frm ur hme in Mesa, Arizna, t hike the nine-mile-lng Subway Trail, s named because f its amazing tunnel-shaped canyn (峡谷). Halfway thrugh ur hike, which included climbing ver rcks and walking acrss streams, the sunshine gave way t a light snw. Sn after, we reached the red-clred walls f the Subway Trail. A small pnd std in ur way, with the trail (路线) cntinuing n the ther side. Because the pnd lked shallw, we began t wade (蹚水) thrugh, with Jessika leading the way.
Abut five feet frm the edge, her frnt ft sank int the sandy bttm. Then she fell frward and bth legs started t sink. I dashed t her, grabbed her under the shulders, and pulled her ut. She climbed back t shre. But nw I was sinking. The mud came all the way up t my right thigh and my left calf (小腿肚). I freed my left leg but culdn’t mve my right.
Jess handed me a lng stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike I put it dwn the side f my leg and tried t mve and pull it ut. Nthing. I was trapped in quicksand (流沙) .
Jessika started scping (舀) sand with bth hands, but it was refilling faster than she culd pull it ut. “Dn’t bther,” I tld her. “Yu’re just wasting yur energy.” While I was n lnger sinking, I wasn’t getting ut, either.
We culdn’t call fr help because the clsest rescue team was back at the trailhead, five hurs away frm us. I tld Jessika she had t hike back and call fr help. She was scared-she had nly ever hiked with me and was fearful f hiking alne n a trail the Natinal Park Service calls “very tugh.” But we were ut f ptins.
