Fr years, I watched her effrtlessly light up cnversatins with bth strangers and family. Her empathy and ability t reach the heart culd make anyne laugh, even when the stry itself did nt apply t them at all. “Mm, have yu ever thught abut being a stand-up cmedian?” “It is t late fr me, sn,” she respnded, laughing at the idea. I culd nt bear t watch her struggle between ambitin and dubt.
Her birthday was cming up. Althugh I had already bught her a present I knew what I actually wanted t give her. I placed little ntes f encuragement inside the present. I asked my family and her friends t d the same. Eventually I had cllected 146 ntes, and each with the same sentiment, “Yu are humrus, full f life, and ready t take n the stage.”
On the day f her birthday, my mm unwrapped my present. She was nt surprised as she had been hinted at it fr lng. But then she saw thse little ntes. She started t weep with her hands full f ntes. She culd nt believe the supprt was real.
Within tw mnths, my mm gave her first perfrmance in a New Yrk cmedy club. I have read the ntes cuntless times with my mm. They are framed and line the walls f her new ffice space that she rented with the prfits she made frm wrking as a prfessinal cmedian. Fr many parents, their children’s careers are their greatest accmplishment, but fr me my mm’s is mine.

Clthes were nce used until they fell apart. Nt tday. In high-incme cuntries in particular, clthing and ftwear are increasingly frequently bught, thrwn away and replaced with new fashins, which are themselves sn thrwn away and replaced.
The s-called “Fast fashin” is having a surprising envirnmental impact. Take water fr example, the fashin industry, ne f the wrld’s largest users f water, cnsumes anywhere frm 20 trillin t 200 trillin litres every year. ‘Then there are micrplastics. Plastic fibres are released when we wash plyester (聚酯纤维) and ther plymer-based textiles, and make up between 20% and 35% f the micr plastics chking the ceans. Added t this are specific chemicals, such as thse used t make fabrics stain resistant and the pesticides required t prtect crps such as cttn.
Change is badly needed, but will require the fashin industry t wrk harder t embrace mre f what is knwn as the circular ecnmy. That will invlve at least tw things: refcusing n making things that last, and s encuraging reuse; and mre rapidly expanding the technlgies fr sustainable manufacturing prcesses, especially recycling. There’s a big rle fr research—bth academic and industrial—in achieving these and ther ambitins.
Researchers culd begin by helping t prvide mre accurate estimates f water use. There is als wrk t be dne n imprving and expanding textiles recycling. Undubtedly, used textiles g t landfill in part because there are relatively few systems that cllect, recycle and reuse materials. Such recycling requires the manual separatin f fibres, as well as buttns and zips. Different fibres are nt easy t identify by eye, and verall such manual prcesses are time-cnsuming. Machinery is being develped that can help. Technlgies als exist t recycle used fibres chemically and t create high-quality fibres that can be reused in clthing. But these are nwhere near the scale needed.
Anther challenge fr researchers is t wrk ut hw t get cnsumers and manufacturers t change their behavir. Other research questins include finding ways t encurage peple t purchase lng lasting gds; explring hw t satisfy desires fr smething new while reducing envirnmental impact; and understanding why certain measures can be successfully scaled up whereas thers fail.
