In the Pascucci household, putting up Christmas lights was always a big day of celebration and a family affair. Every year, Anthony Pascucci, the male head of the family, and his older sister, Connie Pascucci, and Anthony’s son, Anthony Jr., and daughter, Sara, pitched in it.
In 2020, Anthony Sr., 60, tied colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if the brightness of the lights could counter some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19. However, just several days after Christmas Eve the pandemic claimed his life.
Sara says the next weeks were the worst of her life. But when she pulled up to the house at the end of a long day, the twinkling Christmas lights brought her a spark of joy. Taking the lights down felt like a final act of closure she wasn’t ready to take. So she kept them up.
One day Sara received an unsigned letter which read “Take your Christmas lights down! It’s Valentine’s Day!!!” Sara was shocked and angry. She decided to post the letter. “I wanted to remind people that we all had a tough year and people should be a little more caring toward each other,” she says.
“I know what it feels like to lose someone and not want to put their things away. It’s very hard,” one man commented. And something strange began to happen. Sara was driving back from work one day when she noticed that Christmas lights were appearing—or reappearing—on neighbors’ houses. The mystery had a sweet explanation: Her neighbors had gotten together and decided, collectively, to hang their lights back up and turn them back on in honor of Sara’s father.
“To see the lights and the block lit up again,” Sara said, “it touched my heart.” A few weeks later, Sara decided she was ready to take down the lights. Sara said it was hard to pack them away—“but not as hard as I think it would have been if we hadn’t experienced all that support and love.”
24、In Sara’s family, putting up Christmas lights _________.
A. was in the charge of Anthony B. was a family routine
C. was the biggest event in a year D. could remove the darkness of the past year
25、Sara kept the lights up because _________.
A. they reminded her of her father B. it was still Christmas season then
C. it was too troublesome to remove them D. she couldn’t tolerate them
26、Sara posted the unsigned letter in order to _________.
A. share her anger and shock
B. win others’ sympathy and favor
C. criticize the person who wrote the letter
D. appeal to people to show more consideration to others
27、Which can be the most probable title for the text?
A. Up in Lights. B. Sara’s Sweet Neighbors.
C. An Unforgettable Christmas. D. Let Your Neighbors’ Lights On.
Across the gardens of Britain, people are building sheds. People have gone crazy about sheds. The Timber Trade Federation reports that in October, the last month for which statistics were available, imports of softwood were 34% higher than a year earlier. With stocks (库存) running low, what wood is available is quickly sold out.
A garden shed used to be mostly a place to store tools, or a place to discuss how to grow flowers and enjoy tea and snacks while the rain falls outside, according to Michael Rand, an expert gardener. But the creative brain-worker has long put it to more productive use. Roald Dahl and Dylan Thomas wrote in sheds. George Bernard Shaw had one in his Hertfordshire garden that faced the sun.
Besides growing flowers, the sheds now being built are also often intended for work. However, they are grander than the ones those pioneer shed-writers used. Green Retreats, which mostly builds garden offices, says that overall sales on building sheds grew by 113% between 2019 and 2020. Larger and fancier structures are especially popular.
This has an important impact on cities. Urban scholars like Richard Florida and Edward Glaeser are busy trying to work out whether the rise in home-working that has occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic will continue when the virus declines. If it does, many service jobs in cities, from waiters to taxi drivers, will disappear. Public transport systems will struggle. The value of city-centre housing will drop. The shed boom makes that outcome more likely.
A white-collar worker who has tried to work from the kitchen table for the past nine months might be keen to return to the office. A worker who has a beautiful garden shed with Wi-Fi will not hope so. Joel Bird, who builds personalized sheds, is certain that his customers expect a long-term change in their working habits. “They don’t consider home-working to be temporary,” he says. “They’re spending too much money on sheds.”
28、Why did Britain buy more softwood from other countries?
A. Softwood was cheaper this year.
B. Demands for sheds were on the rise.
C. Softwood suppliers were fewer than before.
D. Britons stored softwood like crazy due to COVID-19.
29、What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Previous shed-writers. B. Various functions of sheds.
C. Improvements on shed-building. D. The advantages of garden-sheds.
30、What can we infer from the text?
A. The shed boom might threaten economy in cities.
B. Workers are eager to return to work in their offices.
C. More people prefer gardening in their beautiful sheds.
D. People’s working habits remain the same after COVID-19.
31、What is Joel Bird’s attitude to returning to work in office after COVID-19?
A. Unclear. B. Optimistic. C. Indifferent. D. Pessimistic.
Ariel Novoplansky, an ecologist in Israel, set up an experiment among pea plants to study how they communicate with each other.
In the experiments Ariel put the pea plants in rows of containers. The center plant in the row was the target. The pea plants had been grown with two main roots. On one side, each pea plant had one root in its own pot and the other reaching into a neighbor’s pot. The central plant connected to its closest neighbor, which connected to another neighbor, and so on down the line. On the other side, all the plants kept their roots in their own pots, unconnected to their neighbors.
With everything ready, the ecologist created a dryness for the central target plant, which had quickly closed up its leaf pores (气孔) to save water. Amazingly, the connected plants on one side gradually closed up their leaf pores, even though only one of them had experienced real dryness. On the other side, with unconnected roots pea chain, all their pores stayed open. This means the warning signal didn’t travel from the stressed plants leaves through the air, but only from its roots through the soil.
It’s possible that plants are just eavesdropping (偷听) even if the damaged plant didn’t mean to send signals to them. Maybe the damaged plant leaks certain chemicals and nearby roots could sense those signals. But the plants with connected roots that weren’t dried out passed on the drought signals to their neighbors too, which means simple eavesdropping probably isn’t the answer. They seem to be having a real conversation, picking up information on one side and sharing it with a neighbor on the other.
The benefit to a plant that receives this information is pretty clear. But what’s the benefit to sending a danger signal to your neighbor? Remember, your neighbor may actually be you.
32、Which aspect of the experiment does paragraph 2 mainly concern?
A. Its finding. B. Its application. C. Its purpose. D. Its design.
33、How do the pea plants communicate in the experiment?
A. By connecting their roots. B. By opening their leaf pores.
C. By spreading a special smell. D. By leaking certain chemicals.
34、Which word best describes the communication between plants?
A. Confidential. B. Cooperative. C. Long-distance. D. Air-to-air.
35、Why does a plant send a danger signal to its neighbors according to the last paragraph?
A. To better its surroundings. B. To make itself strong.
C. To develop its root. D. To keep itself safe.

36、One Second Every Day
I’ve been in advertising for eight years and used to work a lot of late nights and weekends for numerous projects. ①______ One day I watched a talk called “The power of time off “. It’s about how every seven years, the speaker takes a year off from work so he can do his own creative projects. ②______ I decided I had to do that. I need to take time to start my own creative ideas.
The first project ends up being something I call “One Second Every Day”. Basically, I record one second of every day for the rest of my life, combining these moments into one single continuous video until I can’t record them anymore. ③______ There’re many things I have no recollection of unless someone brings them up, and I think, “Oh, that’s something I did.”
④______ On a good day, I’ll have maybe four seconds I want to choose. I’ll just have to narrow them down to one, but even narrowing them down to that one allows me to remember the other three anyway.
I don’t use any filters (滤镜), just trying to catch the moment as much as possible as it is. I started a rule of the first-person view. Early on, I thought I should have a couple of videos where people would see me, but I realized that wasn’t the way to go. ⑤______
The project has many possibilities. I encourage you all to record just a small piece of your life every day, so you can never forget that day and treasure every moment.
A. It instantly inspired me.
B. The purpose is to remember what I’ve done.
C. I’m always energetic when doing things I love.
D. People might have different interpretations of it.
E. It’s difficult, sometimes, to pick that one second.
F. But I never had time for one I wanted to work on my own.
G. The essence of my project should be recording the thing as I actually see it.

A young woman was waiting for her flight at an airport. She was leaving for London because she got a new job there. It was said that her new boss was a typical English gentleman-polite, modest, humorous and considerate. She was excited as well as a little nervous about her new life.
With several long hours before her flight, the woman hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a packet of cookies and found a place to sit. She took out a book and started to read. Although she was absorbed in her book, she happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold as he could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between them. Educated to be well-mannered, she tried to ignore it to avoid an argument. But to show that she was the owner, she started to take cookies from that bag too. Unfortunately, the man didn’t get that hint, since he didn’t stop grabbing the cookies.
“How annoying!” she thought. As the greedy cookie thief kept eating, the woman munched(用力咀嚼) some cookies and watched the clock.
She was getting angrier as the minutes went by, thinking, “If I weren’t so nice, I would blacken his eyes.” With each cookie she took, he took one, too; when only one was left, she wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her a half, and ate the other. She grabbed it from him, glared at him and thought, “Oh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he is so rude! Why didn’t he even show any gratefulness?”
She had never known when she had been so angry, and sighed in relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate quickly, refusing to look back at the rude thief. She boarded the plane, sank in her seat, and looked for her book, which was almost complete.

I’m David Bowers, your host for the next two days, and I just want to give you some practical information. OK. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are served all day in the cafe which is just inside the main entrance to the hotel. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 2:30 in the private dining room. This evening you are invited to join the management for drinks by the swimming pool. The General Manager usually makes a short welcome speech. I’d like to apologize for the temperature. I’m afraid it’s a little warmer than usual in here because the air conditioning in the business center is being repaired. However, the work will be completed before lunchtime. Right. There are some changes to the conference program. Unfortunately, one of the main speakers has canceled her talk and so a couple of the sessions have been canceled or rescheduled. The updated program is being printed at the moment. OK now, before we go for breakfast, are there any questions?

根据文章第一段“In the Pascucci household, putting up Christmas lights was always a big day of celebration and a family affair.(在帕斯库奇家,挂圣诞彩灯一直是一件值得庆祝的大事,也是一件家庭事务。)”
25、答案:A
根据文章第二段“In 2020, Anthony Sr., 60, tied colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if the brightness of the lights could counter some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19.However, just several days after Christmas Eve the pandemic claimed his life.(2020年,60岁的老安东尼(Anthony Sr.)在屋顶上挂满了彩灯,直到灯光的亮度似乎可以抵消过去一年因新冠病毒肺炎而带来的一些黑暗。然而,就在平安夜几天后,疫情夺去了他的生命。)”和第三段“Sara says the next weeks were the worst of her life. But when she pulled up to the house at the end of a long day, the twinkling Christmas lights brought her a spark of joy. Taking the lights down felt like a final act of closure she wasn't ready to take. So she kept them up.(萨拉说,接下来的几周是她一生中最糟糕的时期。但是,当漫长的一天结束时,她把车停在家门口时,闪烁的圣诞彩灯给她带来了一丝快乐。把灯关掉,感觉就像她还没准备好接受的最后一件事。所以她坚持了下来。)”可推知,萨拉一直开着灯,因为这让她想起了她的父亲。故选A。
根据文章第四段“She decided to post the letter. "I wanted tore mind people that we all had a tough year and people should be a little more caring toward each other," she says.她决定把信寄出去。她说:“我想提醒人们,我们都度过了艰难的一年,人们应该多一点彼此关心。”)”可知,萨拉发布这封没有署名的信是为了呼吁人们多关心别人。故选D。
27、答案:A
根据文章第一段“In the Pascucci household, putting up Christmas lights was always a big day of celebration and a family affair.(在帕斯库奇家,挂圣诞彩灯一直是一件值得庆祝的大事,也是一件家庭事务。)”、文章第二段“In 2020,Anthony Sr.,60, tied colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if the brightness of the lights could counter some of the darkness of the past year with COVID-19. However, just several days after Christmas Eve the pandemic claimed his life.(2020年,60岁的老安东尼(Anthony Sr.)在屋顶上挂满了彩灯,直到灯光的亮度似乎可以抵消过去一年因新冠病毒肺炎而带来的一些黑暗。然而,就在平安夜几天后,疫情夺去了他的生命。)”、和文章最后一段"…To see the lights and the block lit up again," Sara says, "it touched my heart. " (“看到灯光和街区再次亮起来,”萨拉说,“这触动了我的心。”)可知,全文以圣诞灯为线索展开叙述,讲述了Sara的父亲因为新冠病毒而不幸去世,周围邻居通过他们友爱的行为,表达了对他们家庭的支持。故选A。
根据第一段中的“Across the gardens of Britain, people are building sheds(工棚).People have gone crazy about sheds. The Timber Trade Federation reports that in October, the last month for which statistics were available, imports of softwood were 34% higher than a year earlier.(在英国的花园中,人们正在建造棚屋。人们为棚屋而疯狂。木材贸易联合会(The Timber Trade Federation)报告称,10月份,也就是可获得统计数据的最后一个月,软木进口量比去年同期增长了34%)”可知,英国人“疯狂地”在花园里搭建棚屋,所以对softwood的需求在增加。故选B。
29、答案:C
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段“Besides growing flowers, the sheds now being built are also often intended for work. However, they are grander than the ones those pioneer shed-writers used. Green Retreats, which mostly builds garden offices, says that overall sales on building sheds grew by 113% between 2019 and 2020. Larger and fancier structures are especially popular.(除了种植花卉,现在正在建造的棚屋也经常用于工作。然而,它们比那些先驱棚户作家使用的更宏伟。主要建造花园办公室的Green Retreats表示,在2019年至2020年期间,建造棚屋的总销售额增长了113%。更大、更华丽的建筑尤其受欢迎)”可知,作者主要介绍的是现在的棚屋在建设上的提升。故选C。
30、答案:A
根据第四段中的“If it does, many service jobs in cities, from waiters to taxi drivers, will disappear. Public transport systems will struggle. The value of city-centre housing will drop. The shed boom makes that outcome more likely.(如果是这样的话,城市里从服务员到出租车司机等许多服务性工作将会消失。公共交通系统将举步维艰。市中心房屋的价值将会下降。棚户区的繁荣使这种结果更有可能出现)”可知,棚屋的兴起可能会对城市的经济带来一定的威胁。故选A。
根据最后一段“Joel Bird, who builds personalized sheds, is certain that his customers expect a long-term change in their working habits. "They don't consider home-working to be temporary," he says. "They're spending too much money on sheds." (建造个性化棚屋的乔尔·伯德(Joel Bird)确信,他的客户希望长期改变他们的工作习惯。“他们不认为在家工作是暂时的,”他说。“他们在棚屋上花了太多钱。”)”可推知,他对疫情后回归办公室工作是不看好的。故选D。
32、答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据文章第二段内容“In the experiments, Ariel put the pea plants in rows of containers. The center plant in the row was the target. The pea plants had been grown with two main roots. On one side, each pea plant had one root in its own pot and the other reaching into a neighbor's pot. The central plant connected to its closest neighbor, which connected to another neighbor, and so on down the line. On the other side, all the plants kept their roots in their own pots, unconnected to their neighbors.(在实验中,Ariel把豌豆植物放在一排排的容器中。排在中间的植物是目标。豌豆长着两根主根。在一边,每棵豌豆都有一根在自己的花盆里,另一根伸向邻居的花盆里。中央的豌豆连着最近的邻居,邻居又连着另一个邻居,以此类推。在另一边,所有的植物都把根放在自己的花盆里,与周围的植物没有联系。)”可知,第二段主要介绍了该实验的设计。故选D。
33、答案:A
根据文章第三段“This means the warning signal didn't travel from the stressed plants leaves through the air,but only from its roots through the soil.(这意味着警告信号不是通过空气从受胁迫的植物的叶子传播,而是通过土壤从植物的根传播。)” 故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“But the plants with connected roots that weren't dried out passed on the drought signals to their neighbors too, which means simple eaves dropping probably isn't the answer. They seem to be having a real conversation, picking up information on one side and sharing it with a neighbor on the other.(但是根部相连的植物也会将干旱信号传递给它们的邻居,这意味着简单的窃听可能不是答案。他们似乎在进行真正的对话,一边收集信息,另一边与邻居分享。)”可推断,植物之间的交流一边收集信息,一边与邻居分享,是一种合作的关系。故选B。
35、答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The benefit to a plant that receives this information is pretty clear. But what's the benefit to sending a danger signal to your neigbour? Remember, your neighbor may actually be you.(植物接收到这些信息的好处是显而易见的。但是向邻居发出危险信号有什么好处呢?记住,你的邻居可能就是你自己。)”可推断,作者的意思是,植物向邻居发出危险信号对邻居的是有好处的,但所谓助人就是助己,邻居安全植物自己也就安全了。故选D。
36、答案:①-⑤FABEG
解析:①根据上文的"worked a lot of late nights and weekends for numerous projects"和下文的"I need to take time to start my own creative ideas"可知,作者在工作中加班熬夜做了无数项目,看到一个演讲后决定开始做属于自己的项目,故空处内容应与没有做过个人想做的项目有关。

Dear students,
Recently we’ve launched an activity themed on Going Green Starts with us, thus raising environmental awareness. Here highlight two simple ways we students can save the earth.
To begin with, using sustainable products, like glass containers instead of single-use plastics, and incorporating them into daily life can go a long way to making a difference. It’s also suggested that you reduce energy wastage by turning off lights when leaving, as most of the electricity has a connection to fossil fuels whose use leads to environmental damage.
Don’t hesitate to join us and keep looking for new innovative ways to protect our environment!

As she reached in her baggage, she gasped(喘气)with surprise. She took it out carefully and was surprised to see her own packet(包) of cookies. At that moment the woman was so ashamed that she covered her face with her wide-open mouth, and for an instant she blushed(脸红). The plane seemed to stop there rooted to the spot(一动不动). “Why had I ridiculously considered him a cookie thief? I owe him a sincere apology,” she thought. Just as she was blank in her head(大脑一片空白), suddenly, a soft and clear voice, “Excuse me, Lady,” woke her up to the real world. Instinctively she glanced back(回头看) to see who he was.
Surprisingly, she found the man sitting right behind her. It was the man who, she thought, was rude and ate her cookies, smiling at her. She lowered a bit of her body(放低身体) shamefully, hesitated for a moment and introduced herself nervously. After further communication, she was surprised to find that the gentleman was her new boss in London. She was struck dead with embarrassment(尴尬的要死) with her heart beating painfully fast and banging against her ribs(她的心剧烈地跳动着,敲击着肋骨). All the air seemed to be frozen(空气仿佛凝固了), and she felt as if the whole world were watching her. Seeing her embarrassment and nervousness, the considerate boss patiently calmed her down and asked her to discuss her new job in advance(预先). “What a coincidence(巧合)! What an unforgivable mistake!” she thought.
