British artist James Lake was 17 when his life changed dramatically. That was the year he was diagnsed with bne cancer, which resulted in the lss f his right leg.
Durıng his recvery, Lake generated a new idea f using his creative talents t understand and prcess the intense experience he was ging thrugh. He lked arund his huse and began making art with the resurces clsest t hand: ld cardbard bxes and packaging that his parents had thrwn away. Cuttıng up the cardbard and then recnstructing it, he created sculptural frames-his very first pieces f art.
Fast frward 26 years and the nw 43-year-ld artıst has made a career frm that decisın t "steal" his parents' recycling bx as a teenager. By cutting, and sticking tgether littered pieces f cardbard, Lake creates detailed life-size human sculptures.
"My wrk is abut transfrming an ld bx and giving it a new life, valuing resurces," he says. "Fr that reasn, I think it's imprtant that the cardbard is visible in my sculptures, and that peple can still see they're made frm it. My wrks questin hw we perceive and value art and all the things arund us. Arc they reusable? D we need t buy that? Can we repair it?"
By exhibiting his wrk in primary schls, Lake wants t shw children that art is smething that's attainable, created frm the same materials they play with in the classrm. "I have develped a way f wrking whereın the materials and the methd mean that art can be created anywhere: a bedrm, a garage. Each bx had a 7.5-centimetre-wide hle, just big enugh fr ne bird t squeeze thrugh at a time. Durıng breedıng seasn, the team bserved 321 nest vısits acrss eight breeding pairs, with the tits ften bringing fd fr their baby birds. If a bird cuple arrıved at the nest tgether, each tit wuld land n a nearby branch befre enterıng. Abut 40 percent f the time, the female fluttered her wings fr a few secnds, with her chest facing the male This was quickly fllwed by the male entering the nest first, then the female. When neither bird fluttered its wings, which made up 44 percent f nest visitatins, the females usually entered first. Only ne male was seen repeatedly fluttering its wings, which was fllwed by the female entering first. Wing fluttering wasn't bserved at all when each bird arrived separately.
The team believes that this discvery cnflicts with earlier beliefs that nly a few species use gestures t cmmunicate. "They've dne a really gd jb here f shwing there is an assciatin between this mvement, this gesture, and then … the ther bird ding smething," says Mike Webster, an rnithlgist at Crnell University, wh was nt invlved in the research. British artist James Lake was 17 when his life changed dramatically. That was the year he was diagnsed with bne cancer, which resulted in the lss f his right leg.
Durıng his recvery, Lake generated a new idea f using his creative talents t understand and prcess the intense experience he was ging thrugh.
