“Learning abut ne's wn culture, as well as the culture f thers, is imprtant,” says Sanam Akhlagh, wh set up Pardis fr Children. Lcated in New Yrk City, the nnprfit brings Iranian-American families tgether and ffers after-schl prgrams fr children t learn abut their heritage. I am a self-taught maker f gingerbread (姜饼) huses. It wasn't smething I ever did grwing up. In fact, gingerbread huses struck me as an awful lt f wrk fr little return, a baking (烘焙) prject that wuld eat up the time I culd spend ding smething mre prductive.
But, five years ag, I saw a sign at the library annuncing a gingerbread huse cntest (比赛) . I went hme and tld my kids and we made a huse frm the start. It tk all day and we were cvered in icing, but I was blwn away by the final prduct. It was s satisfying t see a little huse, decrated with clrful candy. I delivered the huse t the library, where it wn first place in the family grup, and we gt a generus $100in gif certificates (礼券) fr lcal businesses.
Every year since then, my kids and I have attended the gingerbread huse cntest, and every year we've wn the family grup. Our huses are nt very beautiful; the nly thing that sets them apart is the fact that we make the
gingerbread frm the start. Everyne else uses stre-bught ready-made pieces, which makes the huses lk the same. Ours, by cntrast, is misshapen and leans; my husband refers t it jkingly as “the slanty shanty (倾斜的小 屋) .”
