As the result shwed, a white reflectin is a telltale sign f retinal cancer and that was exactly what Nah had. He endured mnths f painful treatments, but dctrs ultimately culd nt save his eye.
Hwever, Nah’s cnditin was treatable if caught early. Bryan Shaw culdn’t help but wnder whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back ver every picture f Nah and discvered the first white spt in a pht taken when Nah was 12 days ld. As time went n, it appeared mre frequently. Bryan, a chemistry prfessr fund by the time Nah was fur mnths ld, it appeared in apprximately 25 percent f the pictures taken f him.
It was t late fr Nah’s eye, but Bryan was bent n putting his hard-wn insights t gd use. He created a database that charted the cancer’s appearance in every pht. He als cllected phts and data frm eight ther children with the same cnditin. Armed with the data, he began t wrk with clleagues t develp an app that can scan the phts in the user’s camera rll t search fr white eye and can be used as a kind f phthalmscpe (检眼镜): White Eye Detectr, and it is nw available fr free n Ggle Play and in Apple’s App Stre.

It was this last difference that led neurscientists, based at the Universities f Zurich and Osl, t study the brain respnses f peple listening t music.
A ttal f 160 peple were recruited as vlunteers and the scientists divided them int tw grups randmly. In the “live” experiment, participants lay in an MRI scanner listening t the music thrugh earphnes, while a pianist was psitined utside the rm. The pianist was shwn the participant’s real-time brain activity as a frm f feedback. In the recrded cnditin, participants listened t pre-recrded versins f the same tunes.
The scientists were interested in hw live music affected the areas f the brain that prcess emtins. In the live cnditin pianists were instructed t try and adjust their playing in rder t drive the activity in ne f these regins knwn as the amygdala (杏仁体), an almnd-shaped area deep inside the brain.
The results, just published in the jurnal PNAS, shwed that live music had far mre emtinal impact. Whether the music was happy r sad, listening t the pianist playing in a dynamic way led t mre activity in bth the amygdala and ther parts f the brain’s emtin prcessing netwrk. Bird watchers get nervus when they see wind turbines (风力涡轮机) are never a rare sight natinwide. When the wind gets ging, their blades can turn arund at ver 200km per hur. Wind pwer has expanded dramatically in America ver the past 20 years. Many studies have analysed the effects in specific lcatins r n specific bird species. But few have lked at the effects n wildlife at the ppulatin level. Dr. Erik Katvich, an ecnmist at the University f Geneva, made use f the Christmas Bird Cunt, a citizen- science prject run by the Natinal Audubn Sciety, an American nn-prfit rganizatin. Vlunteers cunt birds they spt ver Christmas, and the sciety brings tgether the numbers and has kept the recrds fr abut a century.
Dr. Katvich assumed reasnably that if wind turbines harmed bird ppulatin, then the numbers seen in the Christmas Bird Cunt wuld drp in places where new turbines had been built. He cmbined bird ppulatin and species maps with the lcatins and cnstructin dates f all wind turbines in the United States between 2000 and 2020. He fund that building turbines had n nticeable effect n bird ppulatin. That finding held true even when he lked specifically at large birds like hawks, and eagles that many peple believe are particularly likely t be struck.
“Wind pwer nt nly prduces much less planet-heating carbn dixide and methane than fssil fuels. It appears t be far less damaging t wildlife, t. Yet that is nt the impressin yu wuld get frm reading the news,” said Dr. Katvich, “In 2020 alne, there were 173 stries in majr American news agencies reprting the negative effects that wind turbines had n birds. The fact is, wind turbines might lk dramatic. But their effect n birds is nt.”
32.What d we knw abut the Natinal Audubn Sciety?
A.It is respnsible fr cunting birds sptted ver Christmas.
B.It failed t see the effects f wind turbines n wildlife ppulatin.
C.It has started recrding bird numbers since the early 20th century.
D.It ran a citizen-science prject t raise mney fr wildlife prtectin.
33.Hw did Dr. Katvich carry ut the research?
A.By cmmunicating with bird watchers.B.By analyzing the existing relevant data.
C.By visiting lcatins with wind turbines.D.By cunting bird numbers ver Christmas.
34.Which f the fllwing might Dr. Katvich apprve f?
A.The cnstructin f new wind farms shuld be banned.
B.Fssil fuels prduce much less greenhuse gas than thught.
C.Bird numbers drpped dramatically where turbines were built.
D.The reprts abut the effects f wind turbines are misleading.
35.What’s the mst suitable title f the passage?
A.Wind Turbines and Wildlife: Cexisting Peacefully.B.Natinal Audubn Sciety: Christmas Bird Cunt.

Always questin yur thughts
Actins and wrds have the same imprtance; this is what I need yu t understand. In sme situatins, yur lved nes culd be hurting yu thrugh their wrds r their actins, and yu culd als be wrng. 40 What happens in mre than 70% f situatins is that yu let negative thughts take hld f yu; this is cmpletely wrng.
A.Attempt t be mind readers.
B.Cmmunicate yur needs.
C.Yu’d better nt let negative thughts questin yur judgment.
D.Thus, rather than dump them n thers, learn t take charge f yur feelings.
E.The apprach is nn-aggressive and describes yu as emtinally mature.
F.If nt cntrlled, it can have severe cnsequences, especially in yur relatinship.
G.Let’s say that yu get int a fight with yur partner, and yu als get hurt.
