There is nthing like a cast redwd. It is the planet’s tallest tree, up t heights f mre than 320 feet int the sky. With trunks(树干)that grw t mre than 27 feet wide, they can live fr ver 2,000 years. Sme f them living tday were alive during the time f the Rman Empire.
Cast redwds have survived thrugh thusands f years f natural flds, drughts, tsunamis and fires. They can thrive and recver frm damage as lng as they can cunt n rainwater and castal fg banks that rll in every mrning. And it is thse critical water surces that are disappearing as temperatures cntinue t rise. The damp cnditins the trees like are rarer than they used t be. Cast redwds nw ccupy less than 10 percent f their riginal range.
Their lss will have sme cnsequences, particularly in the vast amunt f carbn they stre. Redwds can stre 2,600 metric tns f carbn per hectare, mre than duble the absrptin rate f the Pacific Nrthwest’s cnifer trees(针叶树), accrding t a new research published in Frest Eclgy and Management.
David Milarch, an arbrist frm Michigan, says he feels srrwful abut the disappearing redwds. He spends his days tracking dwn the healthiest cast redwd specimens(样本)he can find, clning them in his wn lab, and then planting them in carefully chsen places where they can thrive. Milarch’s gal is bth t strengthen the cast redwd gene pl with clnes f the strngest individuals, and t stre lads f carbn. It’s a cmplicated missin with a simple philsphy: save the big trees, and they’ll save us.
Milarch explains that we need a practical and measurable slutin t fighting against climate change. He believes the redwds are the answer. Hwever, scientist Mark Maslin cautins against viewing tree planting as a magic bullet, since even fast-grwing trees take a lng time t grw and be mature enugh t reach their maximum carbn-trapping time which climate change cannt affrd. As a glbal sciety, the mst imprtant thing we shuld d nw is t reduce ur verall carbn emissins if we want t have any impact n the planet’s climate crisis.
54. What causes the decrease f cast redwds?

C. T state the rle f the Pacific Nrthwest’s cnifer trees.
D. T explain the difficulty f prtecting cast redwds.
56. Hw des Milarch save the redwds?
A. By seeking ideal specimens t clne.
B. By explring ways t raise their adaptability.
C. By imprving water surces in castal places.
D. By creating a wet grwing envirnment fr them.
57. What can we infer frm Mark Maslin’s view in the last paragraph?
A. Scientists need t find ways t make redwds grw faster.
B. Grwing redwds is an efficient slutin t climate change.
C. Prtecting redwds can be much cstlier than Milarch thught.
D. Reducing carbn emissins shuld be a pririty in slving the climate crisis.

The Rman Clsseum was built almst tw thusand years ag. Despite its age and a 14th
century earthquake that kncked dwn the suth side, mst f the 150-sme ft building is still standing. Scientists and engineers have lng suspected a key t the building’s durability (使用年 限) is the use f a specific Rman cncrete. But exactly hw this slid cncrete has cntributed t
the architecture’s strength has been a mystery t researchers acrss the glbe.
A team f researchers recently discvered a ptential answer t why these ancient Rman buildings have been able t weather the test f time while many mdern cncrete structures seem t fall apart after a few decades. The answer is self-healing cncrete.
The material has three cmpnents: limestne (石灰石), vlcanic material and water. What the researchers fund was that the self-healing feature might be simply caused by chemistry accidentally. The limestne in the cncrete is likely the secret.
When the ancient Rmans made mrtar (灰浆), they heated up the lime t turn it int a substance called “quicklime”. And, because they intrduced water t the quicklime during mixing, the heat it prduced set up a chemical fundatin that culd strengthen the cncrete later.
When tiny cracks start t frm later, the quicklime stps them frm becming bigger. When it rains, the lime reacts with the water t recmbine as varius frms f calcium carbnate (碳酸
钙), quickly filling the crack r reacting with the vlcanic ash t “heal” the material.
Fr materials scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding f ancient Rman cncrete is a welcme discvery. “This is ne way that the material can be mre envirnmentally friendly,” says Ramirez. “It’s srt f like a message in a bttle. The Rmans made the material. We had t kind f figure ut hw they did it s that we can make better materials — and then, yu knw, in turn, be better prtectrs f ur envirnment.”
58. What can we learn frm paragraph 1?
A. The secret f Rman cncrete has been revealed.
B. The Rman Clsseum was built in the 14th century.
C. The whle Rman Clsseum survived the earthquake.
D. Rman cncrete is essential t the architecture’s strength.
59. What des the underlined wrd “weather” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Take. B. Stand. C. Avid. D. Fail.
60. What d we knw abut the self-healing prcess?
A. The lime itself culd fill the crack later.
B. The quicklime shuld be made n rainy days.
C. The chemical fundatin culd weaken the cncrete.
D. Cmbining water and quicklime wuld prduce heat.
61. What can be inferred frm Ramirez’s wrds?
A. Peple can be inspired t make greener materials.
B. The secret f Rman cncrete is hidden in a bttle.
C. Rman cncrete has greatly imprved the envirnment.
D. Rman cncrete is ppular in making mdern architecture.
