    Written mre than tw hundred years ag, these lines by Walter Sctt remain ne f the mst well-knwn excerpts f Scttish petry:Oh, what a tangled web we weave,When first we practise t deceive!We all knw that hnesty is an imprtant value and that lying is wrng, but wh can hnestly say that they’ve never tld a lie? Perhaps we cmfrt urselves with the knwledge that mst f the lies we tell are“white lies”:little lies that we tell t prtect thers frm the truth.
    We’ve all surely had the experience f smene cking a meal fr us that we dn’t like. The majrity f us f curse dn't tell the truth - we lie and say that the fd is “delicius”.Or if a friend asks us what we think f their new haircut, we say “It's great”, even if we think it's awful. But t what extent can we justify telling white lies like these?
    One f the main reasns fr telling a white lie is t try t make thers feel better. Hwever, when we lie and say that smene’s haircut lks gd, r when we say that we lve a meal that we secretly hate, are we really hping t imprve the situatin fr smene else? Perhaps we are in fact lying t prtect urselves frm the disappintment and anger f thers.
    Anther reasn fr telling a white lie is t give encuragement. Say fr example that yur friend asks yu what yu think f his singing. Yu f curse say that it’s wnderful, despite secretly thinking that yur cat can sing better. Stp fr a mment and cnsider that perhaps yur friend wants sme frank cmments frm yu s that they can imprve. Or perhaps, they need t knw that they shuld lk fr a different hbby.
    Finally, we may als tell a white lie when we want t prtect thers frm bad news. If yu’ve had a bad day, d yu tell yur parents abut it, r d yu hide yur tears and lie that yur day was“fine”? If the latter, dn’t yu think yur parents wuld want t listen t yu and understand yur feelings? Wuldn't it be better t respect their cncern fr yu and ask fr their advice?
    Ging back t Walter Sctt’s lines, we may find even white lies have results we cannt knw in advance. Perhaps the meal yu said was“delicius”will be served every time yu visit. Wuld yur friend trust yur pinin again if he fund ut yu had lied abut his“wnderful”singing? Hw wuld yu expect thers t truly understand yur emtins if yu nly shared gd news instead f bad? Mrever, hw wuld yu feel if yu discvered that the peple clsest t yu had been hiding the truth frm yu?
    Learning t learn
    An essay usually cnsists f three parts: intrductin, main bdy and cnclusir. Start with an intrductin that cntains the aims and an verview f the essay. The main bdy f an essay is a series f paragraphs that explre and develp yur argument. The cnclusin cntains a summary f yur ideas - d nt intrduce any new material here! End yur essay by linking yur cnclusin back t the essay title.
