It's a sunny March afternn at Winchester Village Elementary Schl in Indianaplis, and teacher Natasha Cummings is leading her class in a brand new lessn. It's the first time she's teaching it and als likely the last. The secnd graders' jaws drpped when Cummings explains the day's activity: They'll be simulating(模拟) a ttal slar eclipse(日全食) using the real sun, an inflatable glbe and a mn made ut f a play dugh(橡皮泥) ball munted n a stick.
On April 8, a narrw strip f Nrth America will experience a ttal slar eclipse, in which the mn entirely cvers the sun, darkening the sky s that nly the sun's crna, a ghstly white ring, will be visible. Fr many f Cummings' students, this event is a nce-in-a-lifetime pprtunity. Cummings hpes learning abut and witnessing the eclipse will inspire her students, and get them excited abut science. It's an experience she expects them t remember fr the rest f their lives. "This is a stry yu're gnna be able t tell," she reflects befre class.
In a grassy area utside the schl, Cummings' eclipse simulatin begins: Students take turns hlding the inflatable glbes, and casting a shadw with their play dugh mns. Cummings directs them t aim the shadw ver the spt n the glbe where Indianaplis wuld be. It's a little chatic, but the students quickly figure ut hw t prperly psitin the mn's shadw ver their hmetwn.
Thmas Hckey, a prfessr f astrnmy at the University f Nrthern Iwa, says he didn't learn abut slar eclipses when he was in grade schl. While there are already apps that guide blind users t a bus stp's apprximate lcatin, thse peple may unknwingly end up standing t far away frm the actual stp. A new app addresses that shrtcming by letting the smartphne's camera in n the act.
Knwn as All_ Abard, the AI-based app was develped by a team f scientists at the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear treatment and research center. It's made t be used alng with a third-party GPS-based nline navigatinal(导航的) map.
Users start by using ther apps t get t a bus stp's lcatin. They then pen All_Abard. and prceed t hld their smartphne up s that its back camera can "see" the surrunding street. Drawing upn a deep learning neural netwrk which was trained n arund 10,000 images f bus stps within that city, the app is reprtedly able t visually identify the target stp's sign if it's within a range f up t 15 meters away. Once the sign has been sptted, the app guides the user via snar-like beeps(哔哔声) which change pitch and speed as the persn gets clser t the bus stp.
In field tests, 24 legally blind vlunteers used bth nline maps and All_ Abard t lcate 20 bus stps—10 in an urban setting and 10 in a suburban envirnment.
When it came t getting clse enugh t thse stps, nline maps alne had a success rate f just 52%, whereas All_ Abard bsted the number t 93%. Additinally, while the average distance between the map's endpint and the actual bus stp was 6.62 meters with nline maps, it was just 1.54 meters with All_ Abard.
"Our findings suggest that the All _ Abard app culd help travelers with visual impairments(视力受损) in navigatin by accurately detecting the bus stp, and therefre greatly reducing their chance f missing buses due t standing t far frm the bus stps," said Massachusetts Eye and Ear's Assc. Prf. Gang Lu. "This study indicates that cmputer visin-based bject recgnitin capabilities can be used in a cmplementary way and prvide added benefit t purely mapping-based, macr-navigatin services in real-wrld settings."
28. Why des the authr write paragraph 1?
A. T highlight ther apps.

Fresc(湿壁画) refers t painting techniques used n plaster(石膏). Ppular during the Renaissance perid, especially in Italy, fresces were usually used t decrate walls f public buildings.
The purest type f fresc painting, als knwn as "bun fresc", invlves mixing pigments(颜料) directly with wet plaster. The clr is thus actually part f the material, rather than a cating n tp f it. The clrs f a bun fresc are especially vibrant and lng-lasting; the Bull-Leaping Fresc in Knsss, Crete was created arund the 17th-15th centuries BCE, but the clrs are still clear tday. Hwever, this technique is nt withut its unique disadvantages. Fr ne thing, clrs lk different when they are wet than when they are dry. Artists f the time typically mixed their wn plaster and clr mixtures, wrking quickly t finish a part f a mural(壁画) befre the plaster dried. The mixture they created the next time might have been a slightly different shade. If yu lk carefully at the fresces n the Sistine Chapel, yu can see which parts must have been cmpleted in a single sessin by the faint differences in clrs.
Fresc secc requires smething t be added t the paint t make it stick t the dry plaster. This technique is smetimes used t repair a bun fresc that has been damaged, althugh the clrs are generally nt as bright. Hwever, sme clrs actually wrked better with fresc secc. During the Renaissance perid, the available pigments fr creating blue did nt mix well with wet plaster; fr this reasn, skies, water, and blue clthing smetimes were painted as fresc secc after the bun fresc had dried.
In 1997, the fresces by Gitt di Bndne in the Basilica f St. Francis in Assisi, Italy were damaged in an earthquake. 150 restrers spent five years gathering 60,000 pieces that they culd find and set them back int place, much like a puzzle, althugh abut 35 percent f the fresces remains incmplete.
32. What des the underlined wrd "vibrant" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Bright. B. Simple. C. Watery. D. Rare.
33. What des the authr want t shw by mentining the fresces n the Sistine Chapel?
A. It was in Italy that true fresc was widely used.
B. It is crucial t differentiate varied painting styles.
C. It tk time fr painters t create their unique clrs.
D. It was hard t create the exactly same clr every time.
34. What makes creating bun f rescn differ frm creating fresc secc?
A. The limited chice f themes.
B. The amunt f water in plaster.
C. The time f creating.
D. The cst f pigments.
35. Which can best describe the repair prcess f Gitt's fresces?
A. Slw but creative. B. Cmplicated and dangerus.
C. Time-cnsuming and labrius. D. Discuraging but mney-saving.
