The 17-year-ld student at Iwa City West High Schl began wrking n the prject in Octber 2019, after her chemistry teacher Carlyn Walling shared infrmatin abut state-wide science fairs with the class. As she develped her sutures, she wn awards at several reginal science fairs, befre advancing t the natinal stage.
Healthy human skin is naturally acidic, with a pH arund five. But when a wund becmes infected, its pH ges up t abut nine. Changes in pH can be detected withut electrnics;many fruits and vegetables are natural indicatrs that change clr at different pH levels.
“I fund that beets changed clr at the perfect pH pint,” says Taylr. Bright red beet juice turns dark purple at a pH f nine. “That’s perfect fr an infected wund.”
Next, Taylr had t find a suture thread that wuld hld the dye. She fund ten different materials, including standard suture thread, and tested them, fr hw well they picked up and held the dye, and whether the dye changed clr when its pH changed. She fund that a cttn-plyester blend (涤棉混纺) checked all the bxes. After five minutes under an infectin-like pH, the cttn-plyester thread changes frm bright red t dark purple.
