Carl Allamby started his car repair business at 19, wrking alne in a garage (汽车修理厂). Over the years it had grwn int tw shps, but Allamby wanted smething mre. At first, he thught that meant grwing his business even further. S at 34, Allamby decided t g fr his bachelr’s degree (学士学位) in business management. After taking classes part-time ver the next five years, Allamby was tld he had t take bilgy (生物学) t get his degree.
Bilgy class reawakened Allamby’s childhd dream. He remembered the feeling f wanting t be a dctr back when he was yunger.

Grwing up in an African American neighbrhd, he faced many difficulties. His schl didn’t ffer advanced science classes. Even if it had, ding well in schl culd get him int truble. “Smetimes yu wuldn’t carry yur bks hme because ther kids wuld laugh at yu,” Allamby says. S he gave up thughts f becming a dctr and chse t fix cars.
With his family’s supprt, Allamby decided t take science classes he’d need t becme a health care wrker. Becming a dctr when he wuld be nearly 50 years ld seemed crazy. He wuld instead becme a nurse.
But Allamby’s chemistry teacher stpped him after class ne day. “Carl,” he said, “yu’re like the ldest student here. What’s yur end game?”
Allamby tld him hw he’d like t becme a dctr but it wuld be better t have a smaller gal.
“Why nt a dctr?” the teacher asked. “Yu have a great intuitin (直觉) fr the wrk. Yu will g a lng way.”
He was right. Allamby did well in all his curses. S in 2015, Allamby started at Nrtheast Ohi Medical University. In 2019, at age 47, Carl Allamby became a dctr, and tk a jb in emergency (急诊) medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akrn General.
