He fund hpe in the library and feasted n the knwledge that he harvested frm its bks. It was there that he came, acrss a science textbk entitled Using Energy. He learned that he culd generate electricity using wind. The yungster realized that, if mastered, this pwer culd help his village in exceptinal ways.
Armed with determinatin and an irn will, the teenager set ut t build a windmill ut f randm materials frm a scrapyard (垃圾场). Thugh his utside wrld was cllapsing t dust, the yungster did nt hesitate abut his purpse. He defended himself frm all dubt and criticism. He wrked tirelessly until his dream f bringing electricity t his village became reality. Sn, he was caught in the center f media attentin that tk him t new places that he wuld never have stepped n withut his inventin.
In his village, the dust has nt settled yet and the winds f change cntinue t blw acrss the land. Windmills pump water t irrigate crps, sweeping away anther perid f hunger. William’s frmer primary schl basts new and strnger buildings, thanks t the help f well-wishers and the villagers’ united effrts.
What seemed like a hpeless situatin has been turned int an inspiratinal stry that mtivates each and every ne f us, persuading us that n misfrtune is set in stne. Scientists have fund a way t decde (解码) a stream f wrds in the brain using MRI scans and artificial intelligence. The system recnstructs the main pint f what a persn hears r imagines, rather than trying t cpy each wrd, a team reprts. “It’s getting at the ideas behind the wrds, the meaning.” says Alexander Huth, an authr f the study.
Previus effrts t decde language have relied n sensrs placed directly n the surface f the brain. The sensrs detect signals in areas invlved in expressing wrds. But the Texas team’s apprach is an attempt t “decde mre freefrm thught,” says Marcel Just, a prfessr f psychlgy at Carnegie Melln University.
The new study came abut as part f an effrt t understand hw the brain prcesses language. Researchers had three peple spend up t 16 hurs each in a functinal MRI scanner which detects signs f activity acrss the brain. Participants wre headphnes that streamed audi frm the Internet. Thse streams f wrds prduced activity all ver the brain, nt just in areas assciated with speech and language. After participants listened t hurs f stries in the scanner, the MRI data was sent t a cmputer. It learned t match specific patterns f brain activity with certain streams f wrds. Then came a paraphrased versin f what a participant heard.
The MRI apprach is currently slwer and less accurate than an experimental cmmunicatin system being develped fr paralyzed peple, where peple get a sheet f electrical sensrs implanted directly n the surface f the brain. With an MRI-based system, n ne has t get surgery.
But future versins f MRI scans culd raise mral questins. “What if yu can read ut the wrd that smebdy is just thinking in their head? That’s ptentially a harmful thing.” Huth says. This technlgy can’t really read minds uncntrllably, thugh. It nly wrks when a participant is actively cperating with scientists. Still, systems that decde language culd smeday supprt peple wh are unable t speak because f a brain injury r disease. They are als assisting scientists in understanding hw the brain prcesses wrds and thughts.

An increase in a cuntry’s wrking-age ppulatin is a blessing. Lts f wrkers supprt relatively few children and retired peple. S lng as the labr market can absrb an increasing number f jb-seekers, utput per head will rise. That can bst savings and investment (投资), leading t higher ecnmic grwth, mre prductivity gains and develpmental speed-up. Yet fr cuntries that fail t seize this pprtunity, the results can be tugh.
Cnsider Thailand. It is rapidly aging. In 2021, the share f Thais aged 65 r ver hit 14%, a figure that is ften used t define an aged sciety. Sn Thailand will, like Japan, Suth Krea and mst Western cuntries, see a decreasing supply f wrkers and declining prductivity and grwth withut extrardinary measures. Yet unlike Japan and the rest, Thailand is nt a develped cuntry. It has gt ld befre it has gt rich.
This is a big barrier t Thailand’s future develpment. T prtect its aging citizens, many f whm are pr, Thailand’s gvernment will have t spend mre n health care and pensins (养老金). This will make it harder t invest in prductivity-bsting skills and infrastructure. And where Thailand ges, many develping cuntries will fllw.
One cnclusin is that cuntries with a wrking-age burst (爆发) need seeking mre ecnmic grwth ut f it. India may never have a better chance than the present. It is widely accepted that privatizatin and lser freign-investment rules culd raise its grwth rate.
Anther cnclusin is that develping cuntries need t start planning fr ld age earlier. They shuld refrm their pensin systems, including by raising retirement ages. They shuld encurage financial markets, prviding ptins fr lng-term saving and health insurance. And they shuld try harder t increase female participatin in the labr frce. Getting mre wmen int jbs wuld help deal with the fact that wmen live lnger than men, but tend t have less savings and pensins, leaving them in different situatins in ld age.
32. What des “pprtunity” in the first paragraph refer t?
A. Reducing supprt fr children and the elderly.
B. Prviding mre jbs fr wrking-age labrers.
C. Encuraging investment fr ecnmic grwth.
D. Increasing ecnmic utput and labr prductivity.
33. Why is aging cnsidered a barrier t Thailand’s future develpment?
A. It causes a shrtage f yung wrkers.
B. It frces the cuntry t invest in infrastructure.
C. It leads t less investment in ecnmic develpment.
D. It increases the burden n the wrking-age ppulatin.
34. Why is it imprtant fr develping cuntries t invlve mre wmen in labr frce?
A. T extend wmen’s retirement ages.
B. T encurage wmen t be included in health insurance.
C. T equalize the number f men and wmen in the wrkplace.
D. T settle the cnflict between wmen’s lng lifespan and small pensin.
35. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Planning ahead fr aging scieties.
B. Aging prblems in develping cuntries.
C. Challenges and pprtunities f aging scieties.
D. The rle f female labrs in addressing the aging issue.
