“A fish ut f water.” “A bike withut a chain.” There are many metaphrs fr culture shck, all f which attempt t describe the unique experience f being far frm ne’s hme cuntry and culture.
Scientists have studied culture shck fr ver a century. Rather than fcus n the purely negative aspects, psychlgists describe it as a prcess f stress and adjustment. The first stage is the hneymn phase, when we are filled with excitement abut being in anther cuntry. Eventually, as daily challenges arise, we enter a state f crisis and anxiety, harbring unfriendly feelings abut the hst culture. The lnger we are immersed in the culture, we adjust and recver frm thse negative feelings. Finally, after sme time we adjust even mre and fully accept the new culture.
One f the factrs that determines hw we react t cultural stress is ur persnality. Nt surprisingly, extraverts (外向者) tend t have an easier time adjusting t new cultures. That is because being in a new cuntry means meeting many new peple and spending a lt f time arund them, and extraverts thrive in these situatins. But intrverts simply prefer t be alne after spending time in grups, and nly have limited energy t spend in scial settings.
Cultural intelligence, r CQ, als plays its part. Cultural intelligence is defined as the capability f an individual t functin effectively in situatins characterized by cultural diversity. It has t d with ur interest in interacting with peple frm culturally diverse backgrunds, and ur ability t adapt t new cultural cntext. It is argued that the higher ur CQ, the lesser the effect f culture shck n ur ability t cpe in new situatins.
Many effective cping strategies are interpersnal. A recent study fund that relating t thers with empathy is significantly assciated with lwer stress levels abrad. The mre we are able t take n ther peple’s pints f view, the mre psitive ur interpersnal relatinships and thus ur adaptatin t the stress f culture shck.

Over time, beach sand gets s wept up int the water. Sme f it mves twards ther beaches. Besides, dams and cncrete canals have reduced the amunt f river sediment (沉淀物) flwing dwnstream that culd help fill beaches as a supplement (补充). If the shreline were allwed t evlve withut human interventin, the beaches culd cntinue t exist as we knw them. But in Califrnia, the develpment in many places alng the cast has created a hard barrier, disturbing that natural evlutin.
Over the years, lcal gvernments wrked tgether n a few majr sand supplement prjects. But thse, still, have prved t be fleeting slutins. “Everything we d is a shrt-term fix,” said Gary Griggers, a prfessr specializing in castal science. In recent years, as the sand’s disappearance grew mre extreme, lngtime Oceanside residents frmed an rganizatin called Save Oceanside Sand. A beach twn cannt exist withut a beach. Leaders here launched sme internatinal design cmpetitins, aiming at finding new ways f getting and keeping sand n the city’s beaches.

Ging t a gallery can be really enriching fr children, but hw t get them thrugh the dr? Accrding t a psychlgist Michael Atar, there’s an art.
With digital distractins everywhere, the thught f taking yur kids t an art gallery — and they actually enjy it — seems a huge challenge. It’s cmmnly thught that art galleries are anything but child-friendly places — they are usually described in ppular media as stuffy and serius, demanding intense and extended perids f cncentratin fr meditatin in the backstry and meaning lcked within each glden frame.
That cmmn view depressingly makes galleries the least-visited heritage attractins fr British families. But hw can we get them engaged?
First, dispse f the idea f galleries being ld-fashined, utdated institutins t the dustbin. Similarly, see engagement with art being far wider than a cllectin f dry facts abut the artist and histry. Rather than trying t make kids “fit in” with fixed labels f a gallery, instead make the art gallery fit in with kids, defining their encunters n their terms. Besides, what really matters is that children build a cnnectin with art. T encurage this, yu can make it int a game, either with r withut a reward, with simple quizzes such as, “Wh can guess the artist?” r, “Wh can identify the perid it was made?” Als, dn’t spend t lng in the gallery fr children naturally have shrter attentin spans than adults, limiting yur visit t 45 minutes in a gallery is perfect fr stpping bredm creeping in.
    32. What is the authr’s attitude twards the cmmn view n art galleries?
    A. Critical. B. Supprtive. C. Tlerant. D. Uncertain.
    33. Why shuld a kid be expsed t art galleries?
    A. They lift children’s mds. B. They fster educatinal excellence.
    C. They give pprtunities t create artwrks. D. They ffer diverse ways t perceive the wrld.
    34. What des the authr recmmend parents t d?
    A. T define artistic terms. B. T emphasize traditin.
    C. T link kids with art by games. D. T make kids fit in with galleries.
    35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
